Mark Carney taking on Trump

RedHot2025 · 10/03/2025 16:03

Fighting talk from Mark Carney today. He will win the trade war with America. Blames Trump entirely for this trade war.

He will apply from today 25% surcharge on energy to the 3 US states they supply. Means around 100 dollars per month per family in those states.

Trump is a buffoon as well as a bully and people will not tolerate his actions.

Does Trump have dementia?

Or is he thick as shite?

YABU he's just thick

YANBU he has dementia

Sundowning, lying, power hungry psychopath. Wants to be the most powerful, important person on earth.

It's a risky move from Carney.

Yes he is standing up to Trump and being confrontational. But Trump has far more power in terms of economics and Canada are on their own.

To date most of the middle sized countries (UK, France, Germany, Italy etc) are appeasing Trump and trying to work with him rather than taking a confrontational position against him.

My guess is Carney will either end up as a hero or the idiot who ended up trashing his country in a battle he could not possibly win. We will see which.

I'm Canadian but have lived in the UK a long time. Every Canadian I know wants their leader to stand up to Trump. If he kowtows to Trump he won't win at the next election.

I don’t know @RedHot2025, things are so messed up that perhaps you would be better at running a country, as long as it doesn’t involve setting votes 🤣🤣

WestwardHo1 · 10/03/2025 16:43

I don't know whether Trump has dementia (maybe he "just" has multiple personality disorders), however I have always had a bit of Thing for Carney. Good luck to him and to Canada

His speech was quite engaging. I wish him luck too.

I find myself rather hoping that Trump has met his match in Carney. I think we need someone to stand up to Trump rather than rolling over and appeasing him. Carney so far seems to be that person.

The UK has tried to appease Trump, even going so far as the ridiculous invitation for a State Visit, which so many of us are against and now feel should be rescinded.

Trump is both as thick as shit and may be starting some form of dementia.

I think I might struggle to set up an election then, since votes required.

I could be a dictator, but promise to be a nice one. Have there been any nice dictators?

Ah, you'd have civil servants and admin staff for that.

valder · 10/03/2025 16:48

Maybe Trump is being fed mind altering drugs via his food intake. By sinister forces....

Musk could be his "taster". When he puts down the Ketamine that is.

My brain is having an all over the place day, today.

I'm so glad, I'm not the only one, pleased to meet you 😊

I’m stuck between wanting to advise you to stop posting, and wishing to encourage you to carry on for my sheer entertainment 🤣.

Don’t worry about elections, I hear that other leaders people sort those for you anyway. You’ll be fine 😉

Come back and tell us if they feel the same way when Canada's GDP has dropped by 30%, half the country is out of work and the pension/health system is decimated.

I don't think you really fight Trump by being Trump like in return. Unless that is of course you are as powerful as Trump. Which Canada isn't. Appealing as this may actually sound.

I think Trump is best dealt with by coming at him obliquely and not head on. Then you just get into a slugging match and Trump will pound you into the ground. Zeklensky has already tried the head on approach and it doesn't seem to have worked out too well for him so far. Despite having the support of the Europeans.

Energy going ...up to $100? Bloody hell, such luck.

tallhotpinkflamingo · 10/03/2025 16:51

Mark Carney is amazing, I wish he was our PM.

He doesn't get enough credit for saving us after Brexit.

And his book is also fab.

He is the exact person the Canadian economy needs to get through this and come out better.

Carney will run rings around Trump, but it will be in a smart way because he'll be five steps ahead of him with strategies Trump has never even heard of. I'll be surprised if Trump even understands Carney is playing him, he'll be oblivious.

JoyousEagle · 10/03/2025 16:57

It doesn't matter. You can't run rings around someone who doesn't care about either the law or his own country. Carney will be restricted by both. And Trump will get away with anything - his meme coin is a vehicle for pure corruption, but it just happens anyway.

EasternStandard · 10/03/2025 16:57

I recall Carney here on R4 and had time for him, can't remember exactly what he said but he usually came across as reasonable.

I think @GasPanic has a point though, going head to head ends up not working out for the smaller party.

Carney will be playing a different game, so he doesn't need to follow Trump's rules. Wait and see.

No, it's not the total bill - the 25% levy will cost an additional $100 per household.

Well put, GasPanic

Worth remembering, too, that Carney faces a federal election this year, and that his party have been trailing Pierre Poilievre's conservatives badly. Doubtless his approach is meant to shore up the "big guy" image and secure a win, but as you rightly said we'll have to see
