Mark Carney taking on Trump

RedHot2025 · 10/03/2025 16:03

Fighting talk from Mark Carney today. He will win the trade war with America. Blames Trump entirely for this trade war.

He will apply from today 25% surcharge on energy to the 3 US states they supply. Means around 100 dollars per month per family in those states.

Trump is a buffoon as well as a bully and people will not tolerate his actions.

Does Trump have dementia?

Or is he thick as shite?

YABU he's just thick

YANBU he has dementia

Trump has caused my shares to tumble so I’m pissed off at him for that big time!

urbanbuddha · 10/03/2025 17:14

murasaki · 10/03/2025 16:10

Can't choose as I think both are true.

Me too.

MissyB1 · 10/03/2025 17:15

Go Carney! He's a lethal mix of good looks and brains, my kind of man!

WhitstablePearl · 10/03/2025 17:20

WestwardHo1 · 10/03/2025 16:43

I don't know whether Trump has dementia (maybe he "just" has multiple personality disorders), however I have always had a bit of Thing for Carney. Good luck to him and to Canada

Me too. Often get the fanny gallops for economists

letsallchant · 10/03/2025 17:22

It's no bad thing for different leaders to have different approaches in dealing with Trump. That gives him more to deal with and we can see what gets what reaction.

I do think the suggestion that I saw of Canada being invited to join the EU would be really interesting. Trump would be furious of course, but collaboration is looking like the way around him.

Also, for posters saying 'he's doing what he said' he said he'd bring prices down and end the Ukraine war. Neither is working out yet. Prices will be the crunch point. If Carney can turn the screws on that, let's see how the MAGA-lite folk, not the irretrieveable core, feel then.

mysecretshame · 10/03/2025 17:26

First time I've had a really good laugh on a Trump thread.

I reckon this one is AI/Bot proof.

mysecretshame · 10/03/2025 17:27

The very idea of having a lie down with Mr Trump!

Cattreesea · 10/03/2025 17:27

I don't understand why anyone could be surprised by Trump's behaviour...

The man has several bankruptcies behind him, cheated on his wives, has had several claims of sexual assault made against him and has been making ludicrous, offensive and untrue statements for decades.

Anyone who voted for him and expected anything different from the current chaos was just completely deluded.

I agree. I think the strategy is to ensure his base feel pain quickly and turn on him. Owning the ‘libs’ won’t such fun if you can’t afford the electricity to troll online all day.

Multiple different tactics need to be used on the Trump regime. We’ll see if the bully has a bite as well as a bark. He’s not dealing with a weakened war torn country this time.

Definitely. Mrs Carney is a very lucky woman.

godmum56 · 10/03/2025 17:41

Sadly I don't think he is either stupid or dementing. I think he is an unpleasant cunning person.

The EU doesn't need more countries that are net exporters. It needs to grow consumption. This is why it continually tries to expand eastwards. These are new markets of sizable numbers of people (Turkey, Ukraine for example) where there is opportunity for their economies to grow and the exporting core (Germany) to sell them their goods. It will of course all go tits up eventually like Greece did, but you get 10 years of economic boom before the bust to boot the whole problem into the long grass and effectively throw the dead cat in someone else's back yard.

The problem with Canada is that it is a big exporter and resource rich. Europe needs its energy, but probably far less so its agricultural production which would decimate the French agricultural sector if it was forced to compete on like terms.

MushMonster · 10/03/2025 17:45

GasPanic · 10/03/2025 16:25

It's a risky move from Carney.

Yes he is standing up to Trump and being confrontational. But Trump has far more power in terms of economics and Canada are on their own.

To date most of the middle sized countries (UK, France, Germany, Italy etc) are appeasing Trump and trying to work with him rather than taking a confrontational position against him.

My guess is Carney will either end up as a hero or the idiot who ended up trashing his country in a battle he could not possibly win. We will see which.

I think retaliation to the tariffs is what Trump wants.
This way, he will get US companies supplying those States, with the extra drilling he is planning.
Plus he would have driven prices up, so the citizens of said States will be the ones paying for the extra equipment, pipes and so on and on needed to get it done.
But he has said recently he does not discard a recesion, he hates to predict these things! Well, he is meant to be on the ball predicting what will happen to the every day American!

He has said countless times the tariffs will hurt US, but more the other countries and then he will get more money into US. He can milk this, stretching it, saying it will change any time now.... MAGA may take it. But really it is a mad dumb move, particularly with your neighbours. If he is doing it, he should have accounted to every penny that it will take and ensure he has a contingency. The "I hate to predict thee things" does not cut it....

Astrabees · 10/03/2025 17:50

Is it compulsory to be devastatingly attractive if you want to lead Canada? I have had a serious crush on Mark Carney since his BoE days. (Apologies for such a shallow contribution to this thread)

It is just natural. As US has created a vacuum, Europe will pull closr, with Canada snd Mexico, maybe Panama and... even China! And India. UK should be calling all the indian techs and starting their own ones here from today.

Another place Trump is sticking his foot all the way is Middle East.

Really, we could see a full alignment with most of the world trade on one side and US+Russia on the other.
With all the difficulties this presents.....

Energy going ...up to $100? Bloody hell, such luck.

An extra $100 per month in your electricity bill is a big deal for a lot of people.

MushMonster · 10/03/2025 17:54

I do not find him that handsome, but I have not heard him speaking yet. I bet you I will see in him some of what you praise when I hear his speech.
He has teeth and hits the ground running. Well done to him!

It is. That is the sad part. It is always the working class who pays for the whole duck.

Mielikki · 10/03/2025 18:01

@GasPanic the EU and Canada already have a free trade agreement (CETA) in place and the French agriculture sector remains un-devastated. The main agricultural import from Canada is grain. The EU sends wine and cheese back. Everyone is happy.

tallhotpinkflamingo · 10/03/2025 16:53

Carney will run rings around Trump, but it will be in a smart way because he'll be five steps ahead of him with strategies Trump has never even heard of. I'll be surprised if Trump even understands Carney is playing him, he'll be oblivious.

Edited

Cheering for that! If Mr Carney manages it, we should send our boys to take lessons.

Trudeau is pretty good looking as well - maybe it's pure jealousy from their neighbours!

Come back and tell us if they feel the same way when Canada's GDP has dropped by 30%, half the country is out of work and the pension/health system is decimated.

I don't think you really fight Trump by being Trump like in return. Unless that is of course you are as powerful as Trump. Which Canada isn't. Appealing as this may actually sound.

I think Trump is best dealt with by coming at him obliquely and not head on. Then you just get into a slugging match and Trump will pound you into the ground. Zeklensky has already tried the head on approach and it doesn't seem to have worked out too well for him so far. Despite having the support of the Europeans.

They have to stand up, mostly due to Trump's want of making Canada a State.
Shoewing any signs of weakness will not work. And maybe, we just do not want to.

dapsnotplimsolls · 10/03/2025 18:08

Carney is electioneering. If/when he wins, he'll soften his stance. I just hope he's always 2 moves ahead of Trump.

OMG

Lie down, but not with me of course! 🙄 yuck no idea how his wife copes

I assume she lies back and thinks of the bank balance. And the hurried visas her parents got. And the portable property she's presumably squirrelling away as fast as she can.
