So this was really weird!! ...

(For context, I'm late 40s, married 20yrs, two kids, two dogs, average and tired looking!)

I took my dogs out for a walk yesterday. We were walking through a field and I heard a man's voice. Looked up and there was a man on a bike (maybe late 20s/early 30s, scruffy looking (the mum in me thought 'you could do with a bath') on the adjacent path (which is just up the bank from where I was - so maybe 15 foot away or so)).

He said 'can you have sex with me?'. I thought I must have misheard so asked him to repeat what he said and he said 'can you have sex with me?' Again I thought I can't have heard right! So I said 'can I have what?' and he said 'sex' and repeated 'sex' a few times, then was quite insistent 'can we have sex??'

I told him No. No! Several times. They, in a really kid like voice he said 'pleeeeeeeeeeaase' like he was begging me for some screen time or sweets!! I said 'no. No way. Go and find yourself a girlfriend'.

Then he sounded quite annoyed and said 'why not?' in a way that made it sound like I was being unreasonable to deny him sex!!!! I said 'well for starters I'm married!' (though there were obviously MULTIPLE reasons why I would not have sex with some random stranger in a field!!!!) At that point he went on his way!

It was quite intimidating and I can't believe he just thought it was ok to ask this!!

Further along the walk, I went into some woods. I was feeling a bit worried I'd bump into him or he'd come back and rape me (catastophising I know, but anyway..) then I saw two large trowel type tools - which looked like weapons like kind of wide trowel shaped swords, really big with serrated edges, stuck down in a tree trunk'. It completely freaked me out!!

My dogs and I survived the walk !! But so many weird things have happened on that walk in the last few months, with yesterday's two incidents being the worst.

AIBU never to walk the dogs there again?

But I have nowhere else walking distance to walk them!

Also - do a anyone know what these trowel shaped weapons are? I tried to Google 'large trowel shaped weapons serrated edge' but nothing like what I saw came up! Anyone know why they might've been there? (They definitely weren't innocently left by the charitable tree planting types. These were definitely purposely put there and looked like a signal or warning or something. They also looked expensive so I kept looking around as I can't imagine the person who put them there would've been far away as they wouldn't want to loose them or get them nicked)

Of course if anything happened it would be the perpetrators fault. I think we all know that.

But if someone got attacked and he/sge/friends/whomever found out later that someone knew a weirdo was about with hidden shovel knives asking for a shag in the woods and the person who was approached didn't immediately report it so the guy could be apprehended before he committed a crime, It would be devastating.

how can someone be apprehended before committing a crime?

Ok. I'm going to suggest that you read the thread. Or at least the OP's posts.

Most people have been asked in that situation but this isn't that.

Don't forget that it's her fault if it happens to someone else next as well.

And how ‘crazy’ she is to continue on her walk through the woods.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 10/03/2025 12:26

Let me get this right...

A women takes her dog for a walk in the woods, is propositioned by a man and it's her fault for walking in the woods, for engaging with him, for daring to breathe and be a woman trying to go about her day.

It's also her fault for not reporting it straight away, even though she's explained why she didn't think the police would take it seriously.

Some of you are an absolute disgrace with your victim blaming and old fashioned misogynistic views. I'm surprised no-one has asked what she was wearing.

NOT ONE BIT OF THIS IS THE WOMAN'S FAULT. THIS IS ALL ON THE MAN!!!

100% This

This is horrible, we need to call the police and investigate, he must have done this many times before.

superplumb · 11/03/2025 08:56

Havnt read all replies as in way to work
If not already done so please report to police . It's possible that he has done something before ans they need more information.
He isn't normal and needs to be spoken to. Also let them know about the weapons/tools you found.

Thank goodness you came along. Nobody in 14+ pages of posts has suggested that. 🙄

This thread was started almost 24 hours ago. Do you seriously think that hasn't been discussed? OP updated around 2.30 yesterday afternoon about the action she's taken.

This is a problem. I'm sure there is a difference between areas in terms of police resources and how able they are to respond. But although I've now reported this I am not optimistic anything at all will happen. In my area the crime needs to be very serious in order to have any response.

Like people have said though. Maybe this can sit on file and be added to intelligence if any future incidents occur

As for people saying I should have notified the police sooner so this man could be apprehended - I'm sorry it is extremely unlikely the police would have gone out looking for him and arrested him. They will probably do nothing at all. My informing the police sooner would not have protected anyone from anything..sadly the police in my area really do not have the resources for the kind of response I think people imagine there might be. As I said before, when I was knocked over and broke bones in a hit and run, this same police force did nothing (except insist that despite the fact I was in hospital, I had to report the crime in person at the police station, which was pretty hard as you might imagine given I was phoning them from hospital.with fractured limbs!

I find the police response in your area quite unfuckingbelivable. I would have filed a complaint against them after your accident. i too had a similar accident in the US and the cops came to hospital and had me file a complain there, clearly we live in the middle ages when it comes to policing in the UK.

He may not have done this many times before, it might be his first or second attempt. We can't know that. But what we can strongly suspect is that he'll escalate.

There was a recent court case where a young man murdered a woman out walking her dog. She was old enough to be his mother, iirc. He claimed she'd asked him for sex, he refused and so she attacked him or some such utterly unbelievable pile of shite. He was found guilty.

Another I read was of a very young boy (12 maybe) who exposed himself, again to a woman of an age to be his mum. When he was arrested he said he'd expected her to 'engage in sexual acts with him' (ffs).

What's driving this dangerous insanity? Porn, I'm sure. They watch that stuff online and actually believe it happens in real life. This constant blurring between fantasy and reality is leading us all down very dangerous paths.

WilfredsPies · 11/03/2025 14:16

Sayithowiseeit · 10/03/2025 22:17

I do agree with other posters about the police response though. I have a stalker and they've done nothing.

I think it’s a real postcode lottery as to what sort of response you get. My friend was being stalked and after he ignored a friendly warning and then a very stern chat, the police wasted no time at all in putting him in handcuffs and carting him off down the police station. Fortunately it put the fear of God into him and he left her alone after that. I had an incident with a man while I was walking home one evening which, wasn’t that serious in the grand scheme of things, but was enough to concern me, and they were out driving around the area a couple of times that evening, keeping an eye out for him. So I think we’re quite lucky (how appalling is it that being adequately protected from predatory men comes down to luck!🤦🏻‍♀️) but then you’ve got forces like the ones where Gracie Spinks and Shana Grice lived. Both of them were utterly failed by police.

StarkleLittleTwink · 11/03/2025 17:54

My God you were lucky to get home without being attacked. This man should absolutely be reported to the police. I would never go on that walk again. I would have been terrified.

LionelMushroom · 11/03/2025 17:55

The bladed trowels may have been ‘Hori Hori knives’ - very useful in the garden but pretty vicious looking in the situation you describe.

TiredAH · 11/03/2025 18:10

I will ask my dog to find another hobby apart from walkies. Won't see me there again in a hurry.

Regarding the "weapon" a serrated trowel is a gardening tool. Good for weeding, planting, and small cutting jobs like woody bushes, little branches...

Thanks

I would suggest carrying a small deep heat spray in your pocket… just in case you get a cramp or something on that long walk….. you never know when you could need it, you know, with it being a long walk and you being prone to cramps.

DON’T get it in your eyes though, that might hurt.

I think I would have reported this to the police. He's either unwell, dangerous or both.

Of course this needs to be reported to the police. It's quite a serious incident.

MustWeDoThis · 11/03/2025 18:29

SoreHeadAgainnnnn · 10/03/2025 13:41

Sorry, I don't know why I have had a different response to you. I've reported it now. I just think although I was a bit scared, I didn't really have the reflex that other people might have. I also just think I thought maybe I was being dramatic, or well, nothing actually has happened. I'm not harmed, noone has actually hurt me, etc.. so maybe I thought I was exaggerating it all in my mind or something... I don't know! 🤷 I generally don't have a great danger reflex. I tend to react by freezing and being overly polite in situations that might be threatening (rather than say, fleeing or fighting)

It's because you disassociated with the seriousness of the situation. You found it so odd that you just carried on about your day. This was your bodies natural response, because you were shocked. Unfortunately, you need to readjust how you deal with these situations. You need to connect with present reality and look to the news regarding the increase in sex offences, so you can see just how serious these situations are; then act accordingly and appropriately in the future. You should have dialled 999 there and then - They might have found him. He could have raped you, or someone else.

You need to take these situations seriously so you can protect yourself.
