He didn’t go to Tesco?

I’ve been ill with the flu for the past few days and am in the worst of it, asked DH if he could pop to the shops and get some dinner in, and food for dc over the weekend, as we have nothing in and I thought he would stop at Tesco on his way home from work.

He decided to go to our village newsagents which sells no fresh food and spent 50 FUCKING QUID on crap. He got unbranded frozen ready meals which no one in our house would touch with a barge pole. The rest went on crisps / chocolate / ice cream / pot noodles. He didn’t even get bread (which they actually sell). Because i’ve not been happy about this he’s now gone in a mood and said he’s not bothering again. AIBU to be psised off he didn’t go to tesco and get real food the kids actually eat and not just chocolate and crisps. And now he’s moaning saying he didn’t know he wasn’t ‘allowed’ to go to the village shop and that i should have told him. I shouldn’t fucking have to tell people to use their brain.

What did the kids say about this have they put a report in to social services or are they on the phone to childline as we speak

CalicoPusscat · 07/03/2025 21:47

I reckon he absentmindedly went past Tesco, realised a bit closer to home then thought village shop would do.

The onus is on him tomorrow to get basics first thing.

Sunnydays25 · 07/03/2025 21:48

For those telling the OP that she's making a huge fuss over nothing, do you really think it's ok not to have any fresh fruit, vegetables, yogurts, cheese, eggs and bread in for a whole weekend?

You can't all be men surely.

It’s for one day she’s getting a shop in Sunday home delivery lol

If my partner got as angry as the OP over something as trivial as a few corner shop ready meals, I’d be packing my bags and leaving him.

The kids aren’t going to die from eating microwave lasagne for a couple of days. This is such a huge fuss over nothing.

This. And Why isn’t he worried about the kids eating shite? Because it’s a one off and nobody’s going to die.

The fresh stuff doesn’t last the whole week, hence why we do top up shops every Thursday / Friday and a big shop on Sunday for packed lunches..

Completely sidestepping the point of the thread but
what fresh stuff goes off in a week ?

KimFan · 07/03/2025 21:50

Noone’s going to be on their deathbed fretting about a weekend of eating off plan. Lighten up. Everyone gets to eat. Surely that’s a blessing in itself?!

Why isn’t he worried about the kids eating shite?

Probably because he’s sufficiently rational to comprehend that eating ‘shite’ for a few days isn’t going to do them even a modicum of harm.

'Eating shite for a few days' because their mother will be back on mother duty then to provide fresh food? As stopping your kids getting scurvy is an X chromosome thing, men can't be expected to know this stuff, as it's not covered in woodwork class.

Are you living in the 1950s? Or have you a useless husband?

DahliaBlooming · 07/03/2025 21:52

I can't believe how many posters are claiming they don't understand why the OP is annoyed!

Dymaxion · 07/03/2025 21:53

I can't get past the fact that he bought crisps , but not a thick sliced white loaf , and could then feed everyone the ultimate weekend meal of crisp butties, that I could forgive and celebrate Grin

Getyourlemonsout · 07/03/2025 20:42

Well, of course. But meal planned and done a family food shop - no, considering he didn’t have a family before he met me…

Edited

And yet you managed to develop this incredible skill. You just married a moron.

AD1509 · 07/03/2025 21:53

He sounds useless. But equally I wouldn’t let my kids eat trash all week because my partner was completely incompetent.

How? Are you serious??

This is why men get away with being pathetic

Exactly. There are so many enablers out there. It's infuriating!

They’re probably having the time of their lives scoffing crisps and chocolate…it’s Christmas come really early

It’s for ONE day, god I’m laughing at some off these comments, i dunno if it’s because I’ve been through so many traumatic life events I don’t think it’s that bad come orrrn could be worse couldn’t it really 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

CheshireDing · 07/03/2025 21:56

The point is not that it is one day of eating crap it's that why can't OP DH buy proper food when the OP is capable of doing that when she is not ill. Did the OP go on some short of training course that only females get sent on in how to feed and look after everyone !? 🤔🤔🙄🙄

OP I hope you are still resting and recovering Saturday and Sunday so DH can feed everyone

Yourethebeerthief · 07/03/2025 21:57

@TeaNtoast25

She has a pretty fucked up relationship with her father given the way he "cooked" for her was part of a bigger picture of being a total useless loser. Fortunately she didn't live with him most of the time and so her diet wasn't exclusively pot noodles.

A man who can't get in a basic shop for his family is pathetic. I imagine there's a lot more that falls to the OP to sort out. Men like that somehow can't manage to figure out a lot of simple daily tasks.

The "oh well they can survive on crisps for one weekend" brigade on this thread are clearly happy to allow their useless husbands away with this behaviour. Oh well, as soon as OP is better she can sort everything out anyway so what's the problem?

I'm glad I married a man who can carry out basic tasks and look after his family properly.

Yes it is the point, it’s the whole point, 🤣🤣🤣 she’s getting a good delivery Sunday ffs 🤦‍♀️

Printedword · 07/03/2025 21:57

The alternative is Tesco, so not that different. Not exactly food snob territory

Great attitude. There are only two options: report to social care, or eat like you're dining at a 5 star restaurant every night.

A man should be able to buy some actual ingredients and fresh food without his wife's input ffs.

WiddlinDiddlin · 07/03/2025 21:58

Am I (and OP it seems) the only person who lives in a place where a tesco delivery requires you to order at least three days in advance to get a booking slot. There is no instant same day Tesco/any other store delivery here, theres no Ubereats/Deliveroo that goes to any other store than the local newsagents/corner shop either (we do FINALLY have corner shop/McDonalds deliveroo though. Not that I've ever managed to get an order accepted via my app, it always fails and i still don't know why.)

SO the OP should in fact, have realised she'd be too ill to shop, three days in advance of being ill, and done a grocery shop online or stocked up then in person.

Add that to the list of things women are responsible for, and men can carry on feeding their kids crisps and chocolate for three days straight because 'they didn't know'.
