He didn’t go to Tesco?

I’ve been ill with the flu for the past few days and am in the worst of it, asked DH if he could pop to the shops and get some dinner in, and food for dc over the weekend, as we have nothing in and I thought he would stop at Tesco on his way home from work.

He decided to go to our village newsagents which sells no fresh food and spent 50 FUCKING QUID on crap. He got unbranded frozen ready meals which no one in our house would touch with a barge pole. The rest went on crisps / chocolate / ice cream / pot noodles. He didn’t even get bread (which they actually sell). Because i’ve not been happy about this he’s now gone in a mood and said he’s not bothering again. AIBU to be psised off he didn’t go to tesco and get real food the kids actually eat and not just chocolate and crisps. And now he’s moaning saying he didn’t know he wasn’t ‘allowed’ to go to the village shop and that i should have told him. I shouldn’t fucking have to tell people to use their brain.

@Wherehavetheyallgone yes! Frozen. Nearly got one tonight but restrained myself and made a jacket potato. They must be branching out into smaller areas

@TENSsion

War zone?

There are always things that couples need to cut each other slack over. However, if someone wastes £50 on utter junk with no actual meals or fresh food for their family then that's likely indicative of a bigger picture of OP being left to manage everything around the house and kids.

The husband could have easily gone to the supermarket and got decent food for a fraction of the cost. Why didn't he?

@TeaNtoast25 will be along to cackle and say he must be a criminal mastermind, but we all know it's because he's lazy and doesn't care. It's as simple and sad as that.

Yes it's not "world war 3" or "the end of the world" yada yada. But shit like this has a drip drip effect on women, and excusing it sets the bar lower and lower for men.

He bought some food … it’s only for a few days. Pick your battles.

Because he didn’t want to.

Why didn’t the kids eat the ready meals?

because they didn’t want to.

It’s all fine. It really doesn’t matter

But she’s a feminist 🙄

Where did I say I'm a feminist?

Yourethebeerthief · 07/03/2025 23:14

@TENSsion

Yes, I've heard a few times now that you think it doesn't matter. Perhaps you've got everything you need from the thread now.

ScattyHattie · 07/03/2025 23:15

He sounds like he either couldn't be bothered with the hassle of going round Tesco or only remembered the request when passing the corner shop. I'm surprised he didn't go for loaf for toast, eggs/beans or some frozen beige options as that's what I'd get from our little shop.

I'm sure the ready meals will be no worse than Tesco basics as these things are often made in same factories just packaged up differently but perhaps not great if you've more selective eaters.

Maybe in future you'd be better off splitting your big shop to have 2x weekly deliveries if your always having to top up.

What have your kids said about all the junk are they fuming and livid or are they happy about it, beings your I’ll you can’t eat anyways

I missed the nhs update than anyone unwell at all must instantly stop eating anything until they are fully better. Fuck, I’ve been getting it wrong. I’ve even been carefully feeding MY KIDS foods they can eat when they’ve had tummy bugs recently. I just had no idea I was such a bad mum :(

Women, know your place.

You’ve said women who aren’t mad about this deserve miserable marriages and lives.

You’ve implied women are stupid for not caring about it all that much.

You’ve attempted to belittle a woman by saying she’s drunk because she disagrees with you.

You’ve referred to her with a patronising sexism term.

You used the misogynistic term “son of a bitch”

You’re really no Emily Davison

Dry toast is recommended for belly ache, it’s a learning curve being a mother

MumWifeOther · 07/03/2025 23:17

I would be furious. What a waste of money! Next time why not try and online shop? Tescos and Sainsbury’s now offer a speedy service they deliver within the hour. Obviously doesn’t solve your dh’s incompetence though.

Something similar happened to me whilst I was pregnant with my twins. I asked my husband to buy fish and chips with salt and vinegar. The fish and chips were so raw and awful. I moaned for a few seconds about them. Hubby got very angry and didn't talk to me properly the entire rest of the pregnancy!

That’s not funny in the slightest. I hope you’ve divorced a man who’d do that.

You seem really angry about this thread. Angrier than the OP, even.

Your raging at your husband is worse for your children than rubbish food for a few days.

Yourethebeerthief · 07/03/2025 23:20

@TENSsion

It's a misquoted Harry Enfield line.

I'm equal opportunities about this. The poster who can't put petrol in her car if her husband is ill is almost as bad.

It just so happens to mostly be men who pull these sorts of stunts about domestic tasks.

YourHappyJadeEagle · 07/03/2025 23:20

Sheer laziness. He couldn’t be bothered thinking through a few decent meals for his own children. Has he never heard of fruit, vegetables, protein?
He needs practice obviously—- weekly shop for the next few weeks months , showing his written work in planning and budgeting should suffice.

Hope you feel better soon. I don’t suppose he brought you flu remedy, cough sweets or even a bunch of flowers ?

That poster was me.

I “can” put petrol in my car.

I just “don’t” because I prefer not to.

Modal verbs aren’t synonymous.

He’s happy to do things for me that I hate doing. I’m happy to things for him that he hates doing. We’re really happy.

Oh stop! The poor bloke went to the shop and got what he thought would be ok, he tried. The kids won't starve and you haven't had to go shopping. I don't see the problem.

He tried?! He’s a grown ass man and should know what his kids eat! He must also know that a diet of crisps and chocolate ain’t great. 🤔
