He didn’t go to Tesco?

I’ve been ill with the flu for the past few days and am in the worst of it, asked DH if he could pop to the shops and get some dinner in, and food for dc over the weekend, as we have nothing in and I thought he would stop at Tesco on his way home from work.

He decided to go to our village newsagents which sells no fresh food and spent 50 FUCKING QUID on crap. He got unbranded frozen ready meals which no one in our house would touch with a barge pole. The rest went on crisps / chocolate / ice cream / pot noodles. He didn’t even get bread (which they actually sell). Because i’ve not been happy about this he’s now gone in a mood and said he’s not bothering again. AIBU to be psised off he didn’t go to tesco and get real food the kids actually eat and not just chocolate and crisps. And now he’s moaning saying he didn’t know he wasn’t ‘allowed’ to go to the village shop and that i should have told him. I shouldn’t fucking have to tell people to use their brain.

@BIossomtoes

He bought food. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, he did a brilliant job, didn't he? What an absolute champ he is 👏🏻

Crazybaby123 · 07/03/2025 22:43

I would be slightly annoyed. Definitely not furious. Would then go on Just Eat and order a bunch of stuff I wanted in the grocery section and have it delivered from the tesco.

MyPearlCrow · 07/03/2025 22:44

Moonnstars · 07/03/2025 20:33

Could you not do an online shop?

Oh of course. Woman is ill so should shop online so healthy husband doesn’t have to make an effort or use his common sense. Crikey @Moonnstars

yanbu op. We don’t eat ready meals and crisps/chocolate are occasional treats not real food. Get well soon and then have a sit down chat about this with your other half and explain why you’re so upset.

Which the op has already said isn’t available where they are, and they don’t now have the budget to do so cause he blew it on crisps.

That's not how Mumsnet works. Everyone is chatting about it and OP wants opinions.

My opinion, and many other poster's too, is that it's likely part of a bigger picture. I don't know any grown men who can't manage to get decent food in for their family or pick up the household slack for their family. They also don't sulk when called out for wasting so much money on utter junk.

I'm not saying stick him in stocks and parade him round town, I'm saying he's a total bellend and posters defending his shitty attempt at "helping" have set the bar very low for men.

@Yourethebeerthief well, I have shared my opinion which I’m glad is in keeping with Mumsnet. Also, so pleased re all the men you know. That’s really lovely and great. As for those defending him, I think they’re probably just offering some perspective here. It’s shoddy behaviour but again, what more is there to say really.

@purpleparroty

See this sort of thing pisses me off.
He's meant to be the other functioning adult in the house and yet a basic task like tescos to get food in to feed everyone over the weekend isn't really that difficult is it Hmm

I see other posters saying you're unreasonable but I don't think you are.

I bet when he's ill you don't go to the corner shop and spend £50 on shit,you still do a good shop like normal.

Some men really forget how to adult at times

The posters defending him are they type of women who take up with these shitty men when the wives have had enough of their shit.

@TENSsion

Buying some food and fixing a broken car are not the same thing.

The OP's example also impacts the whole family as they now only have crisps and chocolate that anyone will eat.

Not everyone can fix a car and if you were desperate you'd get it to a garage. Everyone should be able to buy some basic nutritious food for their spouse and children.

It's literally going into a shop and buying nutritious (and cheaper!) food. That's all that's expected of him.

He doesn’t fix the car.
He fills it with petrol for me on a Sunday. He checks the tyres, the water, the oil etc.
If it breaks down he arranges for the garage to come at tow it.

The husband couldn’t be arsed. He bought unhealthy food instead. It’s not the end of the world.

Only you wouldn't - he blew all the money they had on inedible crap, and they live in a village where same day (or even next day) food delivery is not an option.

Well it wouldn't make for a very good forum would it?

This is true.
It would be a waste of a perfectly good opportunity to belittle other women for not thinking it’s that big of a deal.

I look upon this the same way as OP's husband being incapable of navigating a food shop. But at least your example only inconveniences yourself if you go without your car while your husband is too ill to fill it with petrol for you 🙄

The husband couldn’t be arsed. He bought unhealthy food instead. It’s not the end of the world.

No it's not literal end of days. He wasted £50 on shite that no one wants to eat then sulked. He's a lazy, selfish, manchild.

Bit precious that your kids only eat branded food , have they eaten it ?

Crisps and chocolate on a Friday night sounds great !

hooe you feel better soon

Missing the point much?

Why should she have to tell him how to feed their kids properly or save money? It’s a bit different going to the local shop if you need a couple of bits and aren’t driving. He had a car and could easily go to a Supermarket and get healthy fresh food for his children.

I would be upset too OP.

Yeah who gives a fuck that a woman isn't even allowed to be ill and rest without having to sort out her useless DHs shitty, selfish behaviour. He should be looking after her and the kids and cooking for them. Instead he buys chocolate and crisps. If that's your standards then crack on. Some of us here know we deserve far more than that.

Isthiswhatmenthink · 07/03/2025 22:53

ItGhoul · 07/03/2025 21:41

If my partner got as angry as the OP over something as trivial as a few corner shop ready meals, I’d be packing my bags and leaving him.

The kids aren’t going to die from eating microwave lasagne for a couple of days. This is such a huge fuss over nothing.

They had crisps, sweets and chocolate for dinner because he was too lazy to do a proper shop and bought dogshit from the local expensive shop. You’d be happy with that would you?

I’m incensed that posters are making excuses for this shit heap of a man. He’s pathetic. She has flu. And he’s utterly failing.

The kids had CRISPS for dinner. Not sure many Mums would ever go that low!

There's a lot of space he could have aimed for between home cooked meal and crisps and sweets.

Beans on toast FFS!!

Like a ready meal, maybe? Which would be perfectly fine for a weekend. And clearly what he intended to feed them.

Yourethebeerthief · 07/03/2025 22:53

@TENSsion

If you don't think it's a big deal then you're free to say that and move on.

I think a lot of posters are far more concerned that women like the OP are belittled by lazy men into having to pick up all the slack even when they are ill.

localnotail · 07/03/2025 22:54

I think this argument comes up time and time again - and its very valid: these guys all have jobs, they are capable adults in all other spheres of life - except, conveniently, in the area concerning their own family life. When it comes to running the house they are but little babes. How is it acceptable that the bloke has no idea what to get from a shop in order to feed his own kids? I find it shocking and quite gross.

And no, feeding children dodgy ready meals (like, have you ever tried these meals? seriously?)..., crisps and chocolate in any situation other than the end of the world is not acceptable, not even for one day. Nor spending the last £50 on it.
