Is currently getting her arse handed to her by Judge Rinder on Good Morning Britain...

She is not coming across well.

She could have this right by simply donating a wedge of money and working out what % of the books income it was.

Honestly, people are just plain stupid for the most part. They’ll lap up any old media frenzy with barely one critical thought in their tiny minds. Perhaps 10% of the population - maybe less - have a functioning brain lol

GMB were a big part of he frenzy, I remember Piers and Susanna being all over him not to mention the poor child who was regularly paraded with everyone informed of his adoption status and the abuse he had at the hands of his birth parents.

I think that is very unfair, I'm not particularly a fan of Kate but but she's too professional to show her personal feelings like he did.

Kate has an extremely checkered financial past that she keeps as well hidden as she can and I suspect she’d have a lot of sympathy for anyone else with one. 🙄

I'm not convinced he was a grifter. He just started doing a sponsored walk and it went crazy because blimey we all needed something to lift our spirits at that time. His family absolutely jumped on it so I'd blame them, the evidence is there that they exploited it but there's not much that he did apart from enjoying the fame and hell why not.

I think this too .

Wasn't it all over the bbc?
I know my parents in law were loving it and they're very much bbc people

Loving all the sympathy for her, I wonder if it would have been the same had he had a son who cheated like she has, or is it the usual MN standpoint that a woman can't be wrong?

I've got no sympathy for her at all and I do not think she's not in the wrong, I just think there are more than her who need light shone on them.

It's an interesting question if quite so much hate would be shown towards a male offspring if he had done the same. I very much doubt it. Look how much 'she's the bad one, poor Captain Tom' there's been. Her husband has taken a backward step, that's the only mention he's had today. But he will have drunk, perhaps even bathed in, the champagne that that donated money bought. But he's done the decent thing so we'll let him off.

The whole "Captain Tom" thing was the DD's idea apparently - it taps in to the nation's nostalgia for the war (particularly as we'd just had the 75th anniversary of VE Day in 2020). The public loves a little old man in a suit and medals. Yes, the bloke was a veteran but so was pretty much everyone else's grandad if they were that generation! He left the army after the war so it's not even though he spent a whole career in the military...

"Captain Tom" was her creation, entirely. Tom Moore was just a fairly boring old man who hadn't done much at all. It was the daughter, with her PR background, who created "Captain Tom" and all that went with it.
If anyone deserves to profit from it, it's her. I mean, obviously nobody deserves to profit from it, but all she has done is fleece a lot of idiots, which is all that PR people do every day of every week.

I never bought into it so I am not particularly angry. I think it's those who did, without doing the slightest bit of thinking, who are now furious with her. Although she's awful and deserves nothing, they would be better off being furious with themselves and resolved to learn from this and not act without thinking in future.

BatchCookBabe · 07/03/2025 10:50

Ooooh I missed this. Will try to catch up later. Maybe it will be on My5 or YouTube.

Cannot STAND this woman. She has destroyed Captain Tom's memory. 😢

LizardQueeny · 07/03/2025 10:51

She should lean into the villain thing, maybe go on Celebrity Traitors or IACGMOOH.

I'm sure it was on all the news channels/programmes but it was certainly on GMB a lot.

Hoppinggreen · 07/03/2025 10:53

I agree she is grabby (probably got it from her father) and the whole Captain Tom thing was nuts. She should just slink off now and hope everyone forgets the whole thing but maybe she needs the money?
I would say though that there was a lot of insanity during Covid and she is not the only one to take advantage of that and while she doesn't come across well she hasn't done anything really awful
She is being treated like she kicked kittens to death on live TV

LittleCharlotte · 07/03/2025 10:53

I didn't expect to be reading about Captain Tom's sex life on here, or anywhere. That's for sure! 😄

BobbyBiscuits · 07/03/2025 10:54

What is wrong with her?! Flogging self published self help books about grief?
"Best way to get over the loss of you 100 year old parent, install a miniature version of a leisure centre/swimming pool complex in your back garden linking it to the name of a charity it was in no way connected to?
Then hire a man with bulldozer to knock it down when you failed to get correct planning.
Very cathartic way to deal with bereavement."

She must be absolutely batshit to show her face on public television ever again.

That's an interesting perspective and probably applies to me. I found it all a bit cringe, especially the awful record, but although I can see she's dodgy I'm not all that bothered.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/03/2025 10:55

Good. Profiting from the public’s goodwill at a very difficult time for everyone was reprehensible.

SassK · 07/03/2025 10:56

There are far worse grifters and charlatans than her walking among us. She's a chancer, of that there is no doubt, however I think the backlash is inordinate.

I was a bit surprised about that. I obviously haven't been following the story closely enough but I know nothing about his sex life except he must have had one as he has two daughters.

sourgrapes45 · 07/03/2025 08:25

Rob Rinder is barely containing his contempt for her.

On one hand I do feel a bit sorry for her, her reputation is in tatters and she looks very meek and uncomfortable. But she obviously is a dodgy character.

I haven't seen the programme but surely she agreed to appear on it, so presumably it wouldn't come as any big surprise?

BustingBaoBun · 07/03/2025 11:02

I have to say... the Michael Ball/Tom record was an absolute assault on the eardrums. I am gobsmacked anyone would think of buying it!

DustyLee123 · 07/03/2025 11:04

I felt so sorry for him when they dragged him on a plane to Barbados or somewhere on a freebie. And I’m pretty sure it was mid Covid time too. You just wouldn’t.

Purplturpl · 07/03/2025 11:05

Weepixie · 07/03/2025 09:28

Yes. He was odious. His comments about his sex life with his first wife were beyond the pale and showed very clearly who and what he was.

This always enraged me too

The difference is that people have an out, here.

With most grifters, people won't admit that they were grifters because they don't want to accept they were taken in. People hate admitting they were wrong.

Here there's an opportunity to say "Oh I wasn't wrong about Captain Tom, he was a lovely old man, but it's her, she's spoiled it, I never liked her in the first place!" Which is nonsense, but because it allows the people who were taken in to be angry at someone without admitting their own fault, they jump at it.

why on earth did you feel sorry for him?
he didn't have dementia and was well aware of the con going on.
He looked happy enough to me to be on his holiday

really annoys me that people think once you're old you turn into some sweet litt;le old thing

Outnumbered99 · 07/03/2025 11:09

I can't find a clip anywhere does anyone have it?

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 07/03/2025 11:11

@REP22 I agree about his other daughter. It's also strange that apparently Tom wanted the profits from his autobiography to only go to Hannah so that "he'd know they'd be ok". It's never been reported that he was in bad terms with his eldest daughter, so why wouldn't he want her to "be ok" too? 🤔.
