@ConsuelaHammock the money went to NHS charities not direct to NHS

So a different black hole then? Wasn’t aware there were NHS charities. Off to google. My opinion still stands.

IIRC it was reported at the time that the money had funded lots of pens and reusable cups. I think a lot of people were a bit disappointed as they felt they were donating towards ventilators or PPE.

@Coffeeishot No it was the Ingram Moore's house. It's difficult to understand why they just could not go quietly into the sunset.

I think they ( her and her husband, who seems to have got little flack, despite also being named in the Charity Commission investigation) just thought they were smarter than they were, and would be able to get away with it, taking as much as they could despite already being quite wealthy. But what actually happened is that they took the piss, found out that actually, the rules do apply to them and they werent too clever to pull the wool over the eyes of the Charity Commission and have now not only destroyed any money they got from the book but their existing business because of the bad publicity. Now they are skint, so Karma has bitten them on the arse, and the only ruse she can think of to redeem her reputation and maybe resurrect their business is to write this shonky book.

redboxer321 · 08/03/2025 16:50

I read that the money raised went for pointless things like baskets of fruit in hospital staff rooms and the like.
I know it couldn't have gone into the NHS funding pot but you'd like to think there'd be better ways to spend it that might actually have made a difference.

Loved RR on GMTV and I thought Kate was a good sidekick too.
HIM came over well, as HIM, Grifter in Chief.

I thought the money from NHS charities went to things like murals in the childrens wards or for 'nice to have' things. Now I think about it, I can't think where the money would go! I knew it couldn't go on actual essentials

ConsuelaHammock · 08/03/2025 16:53

Absolutely nothing on the NHS charity pages to explain where the millions went other than it was distributed amongst various charities. What exactly was it spent on other than salaries for those working in said charities. How did it actually help people ?

No, me neither. Mind you I'm not overly fazed because I didn't donate to the cause (something I had to keep very quiet about at the time to avoid being burnt at the stake) but I know a lot of people who did felt duped because their money didn't help the NHS in the way they'd wanted or envisioned.

Yes Ive just looked that up and cant see what they do. Something about specialist equipment though. Unless they give the money to charities like Age UK who provide services to the elderly, for example, they came in and fixed my mums curtains and she had a bathroom fitted- not free but from a recommended fitter and a bit cheaper, i think.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 08/03/2025 16:59

@Tomatotater now that you mentioned murals I'm surprised Hannah didn't try to get a mural of CTM on every hospital wall. He loved the old NHS after all!

Namechangetry · 08/03/2025 17:00

At my hospital - to create and furnish a staff break room - staff in some areas had no staff space other than the changing rooms, now there's a staff break room they can use and it has tea bags, instant coffee, milk and cereal bars. Also some picnic benches in an outside area so staff (and visitors) can sit or eat their sandwiches outside - it overlooks a road but it's nicer than nothing which is what we had before. It's not funding ventilators but it has made a difference.

redboxer321 · 08/03/2025 17:02

That's good to hear @Namechangetry
Something good to come out of the whole saga at least.

The NHS together charities buy extras for staff rooms and also things like playrooms and family/visitors rooms, so I imagine the money would have gone into a central fund.

I genuinely didn't realise people were doing it in real life
I assumed it was a thing put on for tv cameras till weeks into it my mum told me she was doing it and i almost passed out from secondary embarassment

We did it in our street because we all had kids under 10 and it was the nearest thing to a social experience with peers that they got. I'm really tired of reading people's snotty remarks about it. It was a weird, lonely time and our street liked that daily contact.

Coolasfeck · 08/03/2025 17:20

I’ve been on MN for many years and there are a few things that stick in my mind and still piss me off regarding certain topics on here. One of them was the whole circus around Captain Tom.

The way the nation carried on was bonkers. I just didn’t get it and can only attribute it to people going crazy during lockdown.

The threads on here were insane. If you even questioned the whole Captain Tom thing at all you were attacked and practically told you hated Britain. If you even suggested the Micheal Ball duet was weird you were shouted down by the Loose Women, Live, Laugh, Love, crushed velvet couch crew. It was bizarre.

well I had kids under 10 and they did the normal human thing of getting together at friends' houses and seeing each other in real life.
If your children were lonely enough that you were stood on your doorstep banging a pan to get an iota of human conatct then that was on you for being daft enough to follow the nonsense "rules".
People make snotty remarks because they can't believe how gullible people were; often to the detriment of their own children

Why is she seeking more than publicity?

I don’t think her reputation is saveable.

Because of her reputation now one will work with her so she is becoming a self published author to earn money.

crumblingschools · 08/03/2025 17:27

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 08/03/2025 17:30

Her book is less than 150 pages long and she wants 9 quid for it. The grift goes on people. The only thing is at least she's not trying to pretend the profits are going anywhere else but her pocket.

BustingBaoBun · 08/03/2025 17:36

LBFseBrom · 08/03/2025 15:46

I agree, she certainly has seemed quite out of her depth when I've seen her interviewed. I think, after this venture, she will bow out of the public gaze and I hope the media then leaves her alone. It's not just her who is affected, she has family. Sometimes a line has to be drawn.

If I was her I'd change my name and move house, have my hair cut differently and wear glasses.

Now I've said that I quite fancy reinventing myself. Any tips appreciated :).

I quite fancy a change of face, like Nicholas Cage in the film Face Off.

I'm hoping Cameron Diaz is up for a swap with my face 😂

Boredlass · 08/03/2025 17:37

She’s a terrible person. I remember saying that I didn’t trust her at the time and I got crucified.

BustingBaoBun · 08/03/2025 17:40

Ditto for me too! I found it quite galling to see her in the Royal box at Wimbledon taking all the applause.

Every time I said anything on Mumsnet I got jumped on by patronising righteous idiots

CalicoPusscat · 08/03/2025 17:41

It's good to hear that the money did some good.

I brindle at Captain Tom being marketed as the nation's grandfather however and Hannah comes across as being very grabby. I never had much interest in their scheme, it seemed false.

She really should not have been taking large amounts of money and let it go now.

Oh, you see, we did the normal human thing of trying not to spread a disease to others that might kill them ☺️
