I'm shocked and don't know what to say.
My friend of thirty plus years moved in with a new partner last year.
She had few options due to three divorces and very few savings.
I've met the chap once, he seemed OK but over handy for my liking. Both her adult daughters have said they don't like him. I thought it was an age and class thing (he's 27 years younger).
It turns out he is an admirer of Hitler and Trump.
I said to my friend well he won't be invited to dinner here. He apparently made the statements at a family party last week. The daughters quite rightly walked out. I'm disabled, my husband not white. My uncles POW. I can't believe she's with him. She was very lonely. Aibu to be shocked or none of my business?

Thank you all. I love dogs.
The fascist has two and that's usually a good indicator of a reasonable man.

Hopefully as my friend has told me about his views she's making plans to leave. I won't entertain him and luckily I don't have that many occasions to avoid him.

I think if you've moved in with someone and you have limited choices it's hard to say I've made a mistake. I don't know what that feels like having been married for 30+ years.

What? You think liking dogs means someone is a reasonable human being?

Hitler loved dogs and had a pet dog. It was a German shepherd called Blondi.

Cucy · 07/03/2025 07:20

I totally understand the moving in part!

Its something my mum and sister do.

Fortunately my mum has been very lucky and been able to leave but my sister is stuck and has no where else to go if she leaves.

I think there’s also an element of not wanting to leave out of embarrassment as my sisters first marriages didn’t work out and now this relationship isn’t working out.
I can only imagine how it must feel for your friend.

If I was you, I would keep telling her how much you admire her and how strong she is for leaving the relationships that didn’t work out and how you love that she puts herself first and doesn’t let a man weigh her down etc.
You could be saying it about the previous relationships but hopefully it will boost her confidence to leave this man.

I find if you are negative about the relationship it makes people stay, so you have to tread very carefully.

I’m sorry your thread has been taken over with posters who obviously have nothing better to do.

You posted wanting advice because you care about your friend and unfortunately posters have tried making it all about themselves instead.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 07/03/2025 07:22

Yes he does say some controversial things but he speaks his mind which is poignant in this world. There is such a freedom of speech and to say someone is wrong for listening to opposing views is narrow minded.

He lies. He lies an awful lot.
His version of 'freedom of speech' is to lie constantly and make personal attacks. Trump, Vance and Musk are behaving like children. It's actually embarrassing to watch.
The vast majority of his policies make no sense and are harmful.

It's not narrow minded to listen to opposing views, in fact I think it's important. However, I do think it's reasonable to question the morals and intelligence of those who agree with Trump and are so keen to jump to his defence.

Wow! What kind of dog is that?

It’s a German Shepherd I believe, an all black one 😍

Hitler and Zelensky are Dictators.
Trump is a leader who wants peace and what's best for his people.

Your comment is beyond ignorant. How is Zelenskyy a dictator? Go on, just for my amusement. 🙄

But Trump is sending people back to their own countries who entered illegally. Sending them home, for breaking laws that all countries have about illegal immigration. Not sending them to death camps because of their religion! I see what you mean about some of the similarities in coming to power, but I still think the Trump/Hiter comparisons are very off-colour and inaccurate considering what Hitler did. I agree with a PP about the comparison being insulting to Holocaust victims.

Do you think Hitler started off by sending people to death camps, or do you think it was the culmination of discrimatory policies that started in a milder form?

There have been many people "as evil as Hitler". There's many alive today.

The only thing that made Hitler worse was that he was allowed to take and wield power. Others have been opposed before they get that far.

US tariffs are pro business within their own country -Trump argues that tariffs on imports (especially from China) would make American-made products more competitive by increasing the cost of foreign goods.
This was intended to help domestic industries like steel, aluminum, and automotive manufacturing by reducing reliance on cheaper imports.

Regarding woke culture - well you can google that if you late trying to be a provocateur.

How is making the cost of their imports more expensive “pro-US business”?

You used the term “woke culture” why can’t you explain what it is?

Because it encourages American companies back to their own country.

you don’t know what woke means?!!!! You need to do some reading.

If you think everyone has a shared and exact definition of "woke" then I think it's you that needs to do some reading.
Why won't you just simply explain what your definition is?

Meh.
Holocaust survivors have made the comparison so I'll assume they know what they are talking about.

Trump studied Hitler's speeches, that is well known. He is absolutely comparable to Hitler in those early years as many who were there have warned.
You don't think ordinary Germans felt the same way about Hitler as those defending Trump feel?
Pretty sure that the majority of those who are uncomfortable with the comparison feel that way simply because of what acknowledging it says about them🤷‍♀️

I wish Mumsnet would specify a minimum IQ and EQ score before posters are allowed to post.

You would fail both tests and we wouldn't have to read such drivel.

Trump wants what's best for himself, his billionaire friends and his fellow rapists and sex offenders.

Yeah, he used the dog to test his cyanide capsules. It died.

Honestly I don't understand why people need to make wild comparisons. Trump isn't like Hitler anymore than anyone else is.

Edited

I think if you perpetuate the belief that Hitler was absolutely exceptional, no one ever like him before or after, you are kidding yourself. He’s just one massive evil bloke who could have been stopped, there were many opportunities to stop him that were missed. And yes, there were many apologists along the way.

Edit: punc.

Quinlan · 07/03/2025 13:51

Hitler didn’t manage world domination… at all really. Surely he should be an admirer of the British empire and all the shitty things we did? He sounds thick. Your friend sounds even more thick and desperate.

Cattery · 07/03/2025 13:57

The mate is obviously choosing to overlook the sheer ignorance just so she can say she’s got a partner. I’ve got a friend who’s doing this. Not that the bloke is a fan of Hitler (tho he does come out with some rubbish) but no one could understand why she insisted on marrying him. He brings nothing to the table in any way, shape or form. She just basically manages him like a child, difference being he’ll never grow up. Boring and tiresome. Baffling
