To be irritated about school swimming attire rules 'for girls'?

DD (10yo) does swimming lessons at school. The rules are that girls must wear a one piece swimming costume and we have of course adhered to the rules and purchased one specifically for these lessons.

DD is starting to get to the age where she's a bit more self-conscious of her own body and at home, prefers a tankini which has short-like bottoms and a full length tight (i.e. not flapping about everywhere) top. We encourage body confidence where we can, but I also want her to feel comfortable and confident in what she wears. I therefore asked whether her preferred tankini would be acceptable for lessons and was told no, girls must wear a one-piece.

On the other hand the boys all wear swim shorts and a few of them wear swim shorts with swim tops - the UV type ones.

I assume they're worried about a 'slippery slope' or girls starting to wear bikinis if they allow a full coverage tankini, but what is offensive about a girl's belly button, when most of the boys have their belly buttons out and some of them are even wearing two pieces?

I realise this is a small problem in the grand scheme of things, but it has left me (quietly, in my own home) quite irritated at the double standards. AIBU?

We're talking about primary aged children here!

Late primary stage. My nine year old is perfectly able and has been for a couple of years

I had the same with my DD. The school and swimming pool wouldn't let them wear a two piece tankini. Shorts and top which covered her completely. They also had to wear the one piece under their uniform until after swimming which meant getting completely undressed to go to the toilet

@WhenYouSayNothingAtAll the school. They expect them to come in 'swim ready' with costumes on under their uniforms. Fine for the boys, not so great for girls in one piece costumes.

Now that's a rule I would talk to the school about. Unless it's like the first lesson in the morning.

What about the younger ones? My DC do swimming from Yr 2. I wouldn't trust that a 6 year old to be able to reliably do that?

And why should girls be subjected to adjusting themselves like this to use the toilet when there are plenty of tankinis that cover more than one pice swimming costumes?

I'm with the school, though think swim shorts additional to a one piece should be accepted.

JollyZebra · 07/03/2025 17:38

Just buy a one piece with short legs and short sleeves. Same amount of coverage.

You can just shove the gusset aside with your hand.

With a one piece with shorts?

Another vote for a leg suit. My DD wears one as she has continence issues and at 6.5 still has to wear a swimming nappy. The leg suit covers it completely. It looks no different to my tankini

Mine ended up wearing what the boys wore. A UV top and swim shorts. They can say you just wear either a one piece swimsuit OR swim shorts and UV top but they get uneasy if you push the gender issue. From the sounds of things, boys should not be wearing UV tops.
