To NOT want people to inform me I’ve dropped something?

I know - they’re being helpful.

But … today in the supermarket; toddler DD being whingey and difficult at the checkout. I dropped my phone out of my pocket as I was struggling with child, groceries and everything else. It’s right in front of me. But three people immediately shout over to me YOU’VE DROPPED YOUR PHONE. Meaning I felt obliged to pick it up immediately when actually I could have done with just leaving it for thirty seconds

I know I’ll get roasted for not being duly appreciative to my fellow citizens and I appreciate they mean to be helpful but seriously … I couldn’t have missed that I dropped it!

Yes YABU. They're being helpful.

Laszlomydarling · 04/03/2025 16:39

I'd probably feel the same, but if also just say 'I know, I'll get it in a minute thanks' Then their good deed is done and I can leave the phone until my hands are free to get it.

helpfulperson · 04/03/2025 16:40

So you just say 'thanks, I'll get it in a minute'

tulippa · 04/03/2025 16:41

I think I would assume people had good intentions here.

MarchingintoSpring · 04/03/2025 16:41

You’re being unreasonable but this is why I never step in and help anyone. There’s always an arsehole who gets snappy.

For all they know you didn’t have a clue you’d dropped anything.

HRTQueen · 04/03/2025 16:42

how terrible being being nice

whatever next

MissDoubleU · 04/03/2025 16:42

Agree with PP. “Just dealing with DC, will pick it up in a minute”

Problem solved.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/03/2025 16:43

You wouldn't have had a phone in a minute in a lot of supermarkets.

YABU

KittenPause · 04/03/2025 16:43

Well maybe they won't next time and you'll just end up with no phone

Ohshutupdavidyoutwat · 04/03/2025 16:44

Are you serious

purpleme12 · 04/03/2025 16:45

Well ok fair enough that you felt like that but it's not worth making a thread about is it

You just shrug and move on

BananaPalm · 04/03/2025 16:45

Ohshutupdavidyoutwat · 04/03/2025 16:44

Are you serious

Right?!

Cushionseams · 04/03/2025 16:46

What absolute bastards.

EmpressaurusKitty · 04/03/2025 16:46

I think it’s reasonable for people to wait a minute & see if you seem about to walk off without it or if it’s in any danger of being nicked / trodden on.

I dropped a bank card without realising & was massively grateful when someone pointed it out.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 04/03/2025 16:47

My phone would cost the best part of a grand to replace if I dropped it without realising. I’d be eternally grateful to anyone who pointed out that I had done so.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 04/03/2025 16:47

I sometimes get this when clearing tables at work, full trays of empty cups in both hands and sometimes a napkin might fly off to the floor, especially if it’s unused. I get cries of “you’ve dropped the paper!” And I have to just smile and nod because, really, how am I supposed to pick it up whilst I’ve still got my hands full!

Ddakji · 04/03/2025 16:48

Yes, YABVU.

XenoBitch · 04/03/2025 16:49

YABU, I bet you would to take to MN to moan if nobody had pointed it out either.

takealettermsjones · 04/03/2025 16:49

Haha, this reminds me of the bit in the Inbetweeners where they are struggling with a boat and the girl keeps going, "do you know you've set a flare off? Is that a fish?" and the lad shouts "yes it's a fucking fish, just give me a minute!!" 🤣

I know that you know that they're just being helpful 😉 But vent away! 🤣💐

It’s made me remember I used to have a rucksack with a small pouch where the zip had broken. I never used the pouch so the bag was still fine to use but I had to stop using it in the end because I was constantly being informed my bag was open.

Obviously I know people are trying to be helpful and I’m not an ‘arsehole’ and as such don’t get snappy.

I guess my feeling is more that the obvious does not need to be stated!

Came to say the same thing know need for a thread about it.

Bonjovispyjamas · 04/03/2025 16:52

I'm sure you'd be quick to complain if someone picked it up and ran off with it.

LadeedahYadaYada · 04/03/2025 16:54

ouch - in the moment you were probably a tad on the stroppy side

Lurkingandlearning · 04/03/2025 16:55

Did you call the police?
