To NOT want people to inform me I’ve dropped something?

I know - they’re being helpful.

But … today in the supermarket; toddler DD being whingey and difficult at the checkout. I dropped my phone out of my pocket as I was struggling with child, groceries and everything else. It’s right in front of me. But three people immediately shout over to me YOU’VE DROPPED YOUR PHONE. Meaning I felt obliged to pick it up immediately when actually I could have done with just leaving it for thirty seconds

I know I’ll get roasted for not being duly appreciative to my fellow citizens and I appreciate they mean to be helpful but seriously … I couldn’t have missed that I dropped it!

It's annoying when you clearly know you've dropped something whilst dealing with something else. Less so if you're unaware it's fallen. I'd rather pick up the phone and wait until you've sorted out whatever caused you to drop it. Same if someone suddenly drops all their groceries. Having Captain Obvious shouting at me does not help my nerves or my embarrassment.

I drop and lose things all the time so I'm hugely grateful when people point it out to me. In this case I think the problem was not with the people telling you but with the (maybe just perceived) expectetion that you'd act on it immediately. I think it would have been perfectly fine to just say "thanks" and then deal with it whenever is convenient for you.

What I find a bit weird though is that no one actually picked up the phone for you.especially if they could see that you had your hands full.

Um was this supposed to be a light hearted thread Op? Some people seem to have got irrationally annoyed by it 😆

I can only to say that I'm exactly^^ the same so we can be grumpy arse's together...outwardly I smile and say thanks... inwardly "just give me a minute!!"

I also have a habit of putting items in the roof of my car whilst I get sorted.

Cue several helpful citizens asking me if I know I have potatoes on my roof... I did, but thanks for pointing it out!!

I used to put my phone on the roof of the car while putting my toddler in his car seat and invariably forgot about it tons of time. Most of the time I remembered after getting into the driver's seat but once I didnt and drove off like that. Thankfully a neighbour had seen it and alerted dh. Dh found it at the bottom of our road. It must have been flung off when I turned the corner.

How would that have helped? Whoever picked it up would still have to put it into the OP’s hand, unless they’re planning to keep it!

🤣 yep to be fair I did once drive halfway home with my handbag on the roof, amazingly it stayed put. So the helpful citizens definitely have a point, doesn't stop me being a grump though!!
