To NOT want people to inform me I’ve dropped something?

chocolategift · 04/03/2025 16:37

I know - they’re being helpful.

But … today in the supermarket; toddler DD being whingey and difficult at the checkout. I dropped my phone out of my pocket as I was struggling with child, groceries and everything else. It’s right in front of me. But three people immediately shout over to me YOU’VE DROPPED YOUR PHONE. Meaning I felt obliged to pick it up immediately when actually I could have done with just leaving it for thirty seconds

I know I’ll get roasted for not being duly appreciative to my fellow citizens and I appreciate they mean to be helpful but seriously … I couldn’t have missed that I dropped it!

Projection and displacement OP. You're stressed at shopping with a whinging toddler and annoyed it's caused you to drop things. These people have done nothing wrong.

Tagyoureit · 04/03/2025 16:56

Fucking hell, get a bloody grip!

MarchingintoSpring · 04/03/2025 16:58

Living in a world where people are saying everyone is getting worse but when they try to step in and help they get a response like this.

You must have some steam to burn off if you’re this wound up about it that it warranted a ranting thread.

Zov · 04/03/2025 16:58

WTAF? 😂 You are complaining because someone has informed you that you have dropped your phone? Are you taking the piss?! 😆They are being helpful and doing NOTHING wrong.

YABVU. Maybe you're over tired!

Sinkintotheswamp · 04/03/2025 17:02

Yabu. A dropped phone in a supermarket is either going to get trodden, rolled on or stolen. Just pick it up. Honestly.

fivefestivefrogs · 04/03/2025 17:05

You should shop online, so that people can avoid you.

JohnTheRevelator · 04/03/2025 17:05

They are just trying to be helpful.

BananaPalm · 04/03/2025 17:07

You're very narrow minded if you think that what's obvious to you is also obvious to others... 🤦🏻‍♀️ They can't read your mind so don't expect them to.

DazedDragon · 04/03/2025 17:10

@chocolategift obviously YABU.

A woman dropped her phone in a furniture store a couple of weeks ago and I'm sure she'd noticed. I was about 10 metres away. Then she walked off leaving it on the floor!

I picked it up and walked it over to her, and she was actually oblivious she had dropped it and so grateful I'd noticed and brought it to her!

Lurkingandlearning · 04/03/2025 16:55

Did you call the police?

No need for that, just log it with 111.

chocolategift · 04/03/2025 17:10

What do people think I did? I’m a bit baffled with these responses; all I did was say thanks and pick it up. But it was literally in front of me, I couldn’t have missed it and unless someone’s the size of Ben Elf they aren’t going to steal it. But because I think to myself it’s a bit stressful and annoying being told something I already know I should stay home forevermore so people can avoid … umm, what? My thank you?

TokyoSushi · 04/03/2025 17:15

I kind of get it OP, but you have to take the times it's not helpful graciously, because a couple of times it will be helpful!

FavouriteFilms · 04/03/2025 17:16

There should have been you’re a bit of an idiot option on the voting options.
I kind of apologise for being so rude, but I was thankful when someone pointed out to me, my dropped phone, when I’d heard a thud, but not realised I’d dropped it.

llovemermaidgin · 04/03/2025 17:17

FFS Why does anyone bother to try to help anyone else when they might get a short shrift or in my case once a mouthful. I offered my seat on the bus to an older person with a walking stick and she tore me off a strip about how she wasn't disabled blah, blah. I just stared and thought fuck you.
The bus was full and a bit jolty, lot of potholes where I live, and the silly cow fell and hit the deck. I just ignored her. Someone helped her up, she was swearing and mouthing off because noone had offered her a seat. When the helper, who had been standing pointed out I had, she mouthed off at him too shouting and swearing.
Totally bat shit.

Redpeach · 04/03/2025 17:19

I agree op, people, bless em, think they're being helpful but they're just stating the bleedin obvious

ADifferentSong · 04/03/2025 17:22

Wait until you lose one/have one stolen!

Bubblemonkey · 04/03/2025 17:26

You’d complain if someone wiped it…

user2848502016 · 04/03/2025 17:27

I know what you mean but you could have just said "I know thanks I'll get it in a sec"

OneWaryCat · 04/03/2025 17:30

I know what you mean because I often travel on the tube and train into and my bag sometimes won't zip up fully sometimes if I have a lunchbox, water bottle, and umbrella along with my heavy laptop and people constantly stop me to say 'EXCUSE ME, YOUR BAG IS OPEN!'

Sometimes it can be like 4 or 5 times in the space of a ten minute journey.

I get they are trying to be helpful but people seem to think it's some sort of HUGE risk to have an open bag, when I already know full well that my keys, phone and purse are in my coat pocket, so unless they want a dirty lunchbox, thieves are not going to get anything. PLUS, I'm aware it's open so I'm aware of anyone who might be close to me/touching it.

It forces me to carry my rucksack in my hand as opposed to on my back because I'm fed up of being stopped all the time.

I can empathise, OP. Your attention was on several different things at once and having something obvious pointed out by no less than 3 people in quick succession, just adds to the overwhelm!

Of course they were trying to be kind - which is why you said thank you!

Your only mistake was posting in AIBU 😂

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 04/03/2025 17:41

@chocolategift Genuine question but what kind of responses were you anticipating/hoping for?

Snorlaxo · 04/03/2025 17:44

I did this today when the person in front of me dropped their AirPods case. It made a sound when it dropped but I told the person because I was trying to be helpful. Luckily the person said thanks which is what I would have said if I was the one who dropped it.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 04/03/2025 17:46

In the nicest possible way do u think you're just a bit stressed and over tired, I'm sure everything will feel better after a (hopefully) good night's sleep!!!
I know the stress of flapping and dropping stuff everywhere at the tills whilst wrangling a toddler and a baby. I normally give a manic running commentary, that with my dishevelled appearance means people probably are too scared to say something to me, apart from the other parents who Get It 😂

Serpentstooth · 04/03/2025 17:50

People tried to help me. I didn't want them to, I prefer to suffer. AiBU?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 04/03/2025 17:56

Really!!!
