To NOT want people to inform me I’ve dropped something?

chocolategift · 04/03/2025 16:37

I know - they’re being helpful.

But … today in the supermarket; toddler DD being whingey and difficult at the checkout. I dropped my phone out of my pocket as I was struggling with child, groceries and everything else. It’s right in front of me. But three people immediately shout over to me YOU’VE DROPPED YOUR PHONE. Meaning I felt obliged to pick it up immediately when actually I could have done with just leaving it for thirty seconds

I know I’ll get roasted for not being duly appreciative to my fellow citizens and I appreciate they mean to be helpful but seriously … I couldn’t have missed that I dropped it!

You’re just being unpleasant for the sake of it. That sarcastic ‘you’re a charmer’ because I was slightly internally exasperated at numerous people shouting at something I already knew?

I mean, what have I actually done wrong here apart from post on here about it (and I honestly really can’t say how much I wish I hadn’t, I thought it would be a lighthearted sort of thread where you know you’re being a bit unreasonable but the general public can still be a bit annoying.) I wasn’t prepared for the personal attacks and even though I know they’re nonsense it’s still surprisingly upsetting.

Seriously, take a look at my thread from yesterday. It'll cheer you up, I promise 😀 I voted YANBU out of pure solidarity even though you are a teeny bit but you know that and I get it.

OP - I know I’m being a bit unreasonable, but I still feel this way, even though I was polite.

MN - YABU you rude bitch.

OP - actually, I was polite … Hmm

Nobody has called you a "rude bitch" or any such term though have they? You are the one doing so yourself.

TeaNtoast25 · 04/03/2025 20:08

Funnily enough I’ve just read through the thread and that word did actually cross my mind 🤣🤣🤣🙈

The people in the shops wanted to be helpful but the people on here just wanted to stamp on someone who's had a rough day.

I don't think this is an isolated rough day for OP. She sounds ungrateful and frankly unlikeable.

purpleme12 · 04/03/2025 16:45

Well ok fair enough that you felt like that but it's not worth making a thread about is it

You just shrug and move on

I think many people on this site go through life looking for the slightest thing about which to take offence, it must be exhausting!

purpleme12 · 04/03/2025 20:37

True 🤣

notprincehamlet · 04/03/2025 20:39

They're being helpful.
The bastards

DiscoBeat · 04/03/2025 20:43

I dropped my gold watch in M&S and didn't realise. I just didn't hear it or feel it drop. If it wasn't for the kind person behind me I'd have lost it forever. So please don't Put people off pointing it out. Most people are grateful.

schoolsoutforever · 04/03/2025 20:45

Actually I completely get what your're talking about OP. It may well be that I'm a misanthrope but when I was often struggling with little children, people always wanted to say something but never actually help. I know, everybody's going to think me an ungrateful dick too. But I sometimes think people want to get involved for their own sake. Let's face it, you know if you've dropped your phone most of the time. If people are genuinely helpful - lovely - if they just want to insert themselves for some reason it's annoying.

Dancingatthepinkponyclub · 04/03/2025 20:46

How are they supposed to know that you are aware you’ve dropped it?

This is such a weird thread.

KittenPause · 04/03/2025 18:01

I feel I never want to help ungrateful people again

This! Bloody hell...what is wrong with people?? I feel like we've entered some alternate universe some days!

OP...have a nap ffs and get a grip!

Cherrysoup · 04/03/2025 20:50

Think I’d far rather someone told me even I knew. I’d hate to lose my phone, pretty ruddy difficult to live without it. Sad, I know, but our shared calendar’s on there, it’s my alarm clock, diary, so much more.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 04/03/2025 20:54

Jeez that thread is mental 😂 why didn't the girl just let u read the box even if she couldn't physically hand it to you (but if it's an OTC med she can!) She could hold it so that u could read it 😂

borntobequiet · 04/03/2025 20:56

chocolategift · 04/03/2025 16:50

It’s made me remember I used to have a rucksack with a small pouch where the zip had broken. I never used the pouch so the bag was still fine to use but I had to stop using it in the end because I was constantly being informed my bag was open.

Obviously I know people are trying to be helpful and I’m not an ‘arsehole’ and as such don’t get snappy.

I guess my feeling is more that the obvious does not need to be stated!

You could have sewn the pouch shut and continued to use the bag.

Scrabbelator · 04/03/2025 21:00

Weird take on people trying to help you.

TheDogsMother · 04/03/2025 21:21

Wow seriously ! Would you be happy if you dropped your phone, didn't realise and nobody mentioned it ?

Gunnersforthecup · 04/03/2025 22:08

Well, you'd hate me! If I saw you struggling with shopping and a baby, I'd probably pick your phone up for you, were you to drop it.

I have been in that situation and been distracted enough that I might not have noticed dropping my phone.

ThatMerryReader · 04/03/2025 22:14

An experience this traumatising will require dozens of counselling sessions. The local shrink is going to make a killing off you.

CarolinaWren · 04/03/2025 23:46

Sinkintotheswamp · 04/03/2025 17:02

Yabu. A dropped phone in a supermarket is either going to get trodden, rolled on or stolen. Just pick it up. Honestly.

This 100%. If I dropped my phone in a busy public place, I wouldn't just leave it on the ground while I puttered around with other things. Picking it up ASAP would be a high priority.
