To be jealous of everyone getting slim in weight loss jabs while I get fatter !

Sundayslump · 02/03/2025 08:18

Okay - lighthearted ? Maybe.

I’ve been lucky to grow up and be a size 10 . Had a baby at 27. Lost all the weight but my body changed. Baby 2 , again gained 4 stone but I’ve always kept the last stone. I am now 12/14 uk.

I work full time and have two children . I eat healthy for the most part and walk and exercise. When I am super strict which feels so much harder at 40 I am a size 12 but unlike in my 30s it seems so much harder to lose weight now . I feel crap in my clothes and I wish and dream of being a size 10. Call me pathetic !

My brother and his wife , twos sisters and their husbands , work colleagues and a few of my good friends who were never obese but had a few stone to lose are all taking weight loss jabs. They have all lost around 2/3/4 stone and are all now looking fab . All the women are now in size 8 jeans and I am jealous. I sound pathetic . None of these ladies were any bigger than a 14/16 to start with.

I totally understand these jabs are so life changing for so many people who need them but it seems in my life everyone has taken them and gone from a 14/16 to a size 8/6 size Uk and I can’t help but feel like if I just bloody jump on the bandwagon I will feel good, feel happy and be slim.

Now everyone around me is so slim I feel ever more aware of my size .

I want to state I exercise and do eat a healthy diet . I have just found after two babies and getting older unless I basically stick to 1200 calories a day I can’t maintain a size 12.
Ahhhhhh. Sorry for sounding so so so vain.

Oh dear Lord. What I meant was that anyone losing weight will lose both fat and muscle mass. This is whether you do Slimming World or WLIs.

And exactly the same with potential 'bone loss'. And this is why my pharmacy advocates some form of weight bearing exercise. My Mother did Weight Watches and Slimming World for decades. Never once was anything ever said to her about risk of muscle loss of bone density?

One thing is for certain is that weighing less puts far less strain on your muscles, joints, heart and lungs. All my middle aged twinges and aches (including a very painful coccyx) have completely disappeared now that I have lost weight.

so why the arsey reply to the pp?

Why is it insulting to state that I heed the opinions of well qualified medical professionals over the opinion of someone with no medical/science qualifications whatsoever? Surely, that's just common sense?

It shouldn’t need explaining but the way you dismiss other people’s opinions on the spurious basis of them being “Wendy on the internet who in all likelihood didn’t even pass GCSE Biology”

Harry12345 · 02/03/2025 19:55

I have lipodema so can’t lose weight even though I eat so healthy and exercise so I’d love to take it but like you terrified of side effects. Most woman with lipodema are insulin resistant so it helps with that and inflammation

Horserider5678 · 02/03/2025 19:55

What people forget is that once you stop taking them unless you have made huge lifestyle changes the weight goes straight back on! Research has soon 90% regain at least half the weight they’ve lost but most regain all of it!

Dancingatthepinkponyclub · 02/03/2025 19:57

IMO you can’t take them forever, you don’t know the long term effects and once stopped what’s to stop all the weight going back on?

You don't know if people posting negative comments about weight loss injections, (and posting concerns) have got medical qualifications, or a background in science or not! (Or if they passed GCSE Biology or not!) You're just assuming. And you know what 'assuming' makes a person........... (Google it if you don't!)

I agree with the previous posters, your posts are rude and insulting, (and ignorant.)

TicklishMintDuck · 02/03/2025 19:59

I’m the same. I was always a healthy size 10/12 and now at 43 I’m size 16, and I don’t even eat badly. After having two surgeries and cancer treatment over the past year, and now having to take tamoxifen which has a million side effects, I can’t imagine ever being happy with my weight. I maybe need to look into the jabs.

🥱

Yes you can take them forever. Most pharmacies are now offering long term maintenance plans.

We do know the long term affects - there's plenty of information about this if you bother to look: there aren't really any as long as you don't abuse the drug - WLI's have been used in the US for years and years. Bad affects tend to come from misuse like any other drug.

Once you stop, the weight will go back on IF you return to eating too much - just like with any other diet/weight loss method. Everyone knows this unless they are very stupid.

Why would anyone WANT to take them for the rest of their life though? Confused

When it comes to medical matters of course I'm going to disregarded the uninformed opinions of people with zero medical/biological qualifications, in favour of people who are actual medical professionals.

Seems somewhat obvious to me.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 02/03/2025 20:05

The one thing I noticed is that as a teenager, I was extremely fit, active and had a very strong athletic build, even without exercising. My calf and thigh muscles looked like a footballer's and my natural physique was definitely more defined and athletic.

Wish I had it still now... I remember having very toned calves from playing hockey at school 3 times a week, and I was constantly hungry. My stomach would always be telling me when I had to eat at school, even after breakfast when I had literally just arrived! 😅

I reckon the muscular physique i used to have really boosted my metabolism, and of course this was made even faster when I was exercising.

I wonder whether this is why I can't lose as much weight now. Hence why I am more immune too to "food noise"... as a younger and slimmer person, I'd always be thinking of food.

Because its actually a treatment for chronic obesity, not a weight loss medication.

In my head i suppose I

  1. Worry that there must be long term side effects we aren’t aware of ?
  2. Worry I will then have to take them for life . Which concerns me medically and financially
  3. I have this dream/ hope I can get on a diet and stick to it and lose a stone naturally !!!!

In my twenties and 30s I could lose weight quite easily - now it seems so hard!!

This is me. I hear you. I won't take them. But I understand.

because I have spent most of my life miserable. Either because I weigh more than I want to and hate how I look, or because I'm restricing what I eat and exercise like a demon, trying to lose the weight and like myself. Usually both. It's not a fun way to live. Will see how it goes but yeah I'm happy to be on this drug for life if needed.

You’d defrost a burger or cook some rice to satisfy a craving?

No, sorry, I don’t understand that.

If you’re that hungry between meals then maybe you need to look at what you’re eating and how it might be spiking your blood sugar.

No you don't understand. And that's the point.

Who do you think is 'forgetting' this exactly? Any of the hundreds of people who've posted on this thread with their personal experiences?

Inyournewdress · 02/03/2025 20:15

I weigh much much more than you, all gained since giving birth, and I am suffering from multiple co morbidities now as a result. My liver results aren’t great, I have a bad level of prediabetes and high cholesterol, and for the first time in my life my blood pressure is also not good.

I am still hesitant to take these jabs and desperately trying to lose weight myself. I might well though as I think in my case it may be worth it.

I think your friends are very unwise to use them when they don’t have serious medical need and could realistically lose the weight without them. I also don’t know how they obtained them as I thought that even for a private prescription you had to have a much higher bmi and associated health issues, but maybe I am wrong. If they are getting them from a non reputable prescriber then they are literally gambling with their lives.

As I understand it, and I would be overjoyed to be corrected on this, the evidence suggests that most people cannot tolerate the jabs for more than two years, and that on coming off the jabs they regain all the weight plus more and have worse blood markers than before. This may be because the evidence also suggests that for people who lose weight using the jabs, a significantly higher percentage of the weight lost (compared to loss without jabs) is muscle and bone. That means that their body composition makes it harder for them to keep metabolism up and keep weight off in the future, not to mention being weaker. With some of these jabs there is also evidence they actually increase the number of fat cells in the body, the person still gets slimmer on the jabs as the cells are shrunken, but once off the jabs they have capacity for even greater fat mass than before. Combine that with the muscle loss and their body composition could make it much harder to keep weight off than if they had lost the weight without the drugs.

There is also concern that the drugs actually damage connective tissue, resulting in worse damage to skin than normal weight loss. Those who already have connective tissue disorders like Ehlers Danlos are advised not to take them. Anyone who does take them is at raised risk of ending up with a paralysed stomach. There are many law suits in progress over this very real complication.

If like me you are at raised risk of many conditions the drug may help with then you have a balanced decision to made, but if not then it may not be worth the risk of conditions the drug makes more likely including I believe things like thyroid cancer. Certainly anyone needs to consider their whole medical profile before deciding to take them.

TLDR these drugs have some series disadvantages and may end up making you fatter, so if you do decide to skip them you may have the last laugh.

Sorry to sound painfully boring here ..
Firstly , I’m sure OP means long term side effects & not just after using for 1month ..
I’d stay miles away from them ..
I was always a size 8 , size 12 for years after having kids ..
Two years ago , completely over hauled my diet .
Changed Dairy milk for Oat ..
White bread for brown ..
Really researched what foods to eat , that was trial & error obviously..
Got there eventually & saw what worked for me & I’m a size 8 now , 10 in some clothes , depends on the brand 🤷🏻‍♀️ & never hungry ..
I use to go to gym but haven’t been since September, I do some exercises at home ..
Its 80% food , 20% exercise..
Hope I’ve given some helpful advice OP x

It's a medication to treat a chronic condition. Why wouldn't you take it long term to prevent the condition returning?

Inyournewdress · 02/03/2025 20:18

OP you say you want to lose a stone naturally, and trust me you can. Losing one or two stone is literally nothing unless you have a complicating medical factor. Get the GP to check your blood sugar and thyroid, and if normal then start to make sustainable changes and the weight will come off. It’s all about the long game. For most people regain is the issue.

Glorybox2025 · 02/03/2025 20:17

Exactly, you dont treat hypertension and stop taking medication when you have a normal blood pressure.

CerealPosterHere · 02/03/2025 20:21

@Inyournewdress ill have to go and look up the EDS thing, first I’ve heard of it. I have EDS and my GP knows I’m on them and has no issue. It’s not one of the questions in the medexpress medical history questionnaire either.

I’m weight lifting 3x a week to keep my muscle strength up. I do spin twice a week. I’ve done this since before the injections and I can still lift as much weights and cycle as many watts as I could before the injections so I don’t think I’m losing muscle. In fact i think in my legs I’m gaining muscle as otherwise my output on the watt bike would have dropped as my weight has dropped and it hasn’t.

YABVU. Take the pills if you want to and if you don’t mind the risks. Or enjoy your perfectly healthy and attractive slightly larger size. Or diet. Don’t waste energy on pointless envy.

She won't be able to get them will she? Unless she finds a Hollywood doctor or something?

I get why they would want to and don’t have a problem with long term use of medication at all, but my fear is…what if for some reason you couldn’t stay on them? Some kind of side effect worsening or developing a medical condition that is a contraindication. Then you could end up in a position where it is harder than ever to keep weight off due to altered body composition. I also have read that 60/70 percent of users choose to come off by two years of dose, maybe due to side effects. I am sure they don’t all do that lightly so I don’t know how sustainable use is.
