I don't mind my cat sleeping on my bed at all, but sometimes in the night she'll jump on my stomach and wake me up, or will lick my face to check I'm still alive!
This morning I evicted her at around 4am because she'd jumped on my stomach or back at least 4 times! As I say I'm happy for her to sleep there but I can't have the disturbed sleep long-term. Anyone else?

Of course my cats don’t sleep on my bed, I am allowed to sleep on their bed! As long as I don’t wriggle around too much, I can sleep on their bed edge, whilst they each have their own pillow.

My third cat doesn’t like going upstairs, so he sleeps on his blankie in his conservatory.

I am frequently nudged, walked over, toes nibbled every few hours, when dreamies are due, which I obviously dish out. This is a small price to pay for being allowed to share their space.

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/03/2025 20:08

On/around the bed, if they want to. We all sleep better that way, they can alert me if they need me without having to kick up a huge dramatic fuss.

Generally we have doors open, they choose where they want to be, but currently we have a blind 16 year old who will absolutely yeet himself down the stairs given the chance, so the stairs are gated top and bottom to prevent this.

I believe in treating dogs like the social animals they are, which means access to us whenever they need it and not isolating them in one room to suit me/make housework easier. I think if you don't want that, get a less sociable, less gregarious pet.

Perhaps if I lived in a really big house there might be occasional rooms we didn't use often that they would not go in, but we've chosen to have three dogs in a small terraced house, so that doesn't apply.

Cow90 · 01/03/2025 20:09

My last cat used to love sleeping in front of the washing machine too 😂

My dogs sleep in my bed, the little one never leaves my side anyway so she wouldn't settle elsewhere, the big one just likes being awkward and taking up half the bed, but it would be weird sleeping without her now, I would have too much space.

One dog always sleeps on my bed, she doesn’t move a muscle for 9 hours and is like a hot water bottle. She doesn’t smell and she doesn’t make a sound. The other dog chooses to sleep in her crate, door always open, but sleeps on my grandson’s bed when he stays.

One cat sometimes comes on my bed on cold nights. I used to have a cat with the loudest purr and after she passed, sleeping without her beside me was like suddenly doing without a ticking clock. I don’t suppose many people have ticking alarm clocks any more!

cardibach · 01/03/2025 20:10

Nope. Never have. I like my sleep and don’t want it disturbed.

noctilucentcloud · 01/03/2025 20:11

Dog no, he's massive and given half the chance will roll in dead things. Cats are allowed to curl up on the foot of my bed though. I love dozing with the sound of a cat purring at my feet and a dog snoring from the bedroom floor.

SparklyGlitterballs · 01/03/2025 20:12

Yes. I have a king sized bed to myself (widowed) and my dachshund has his own stairs to reach the bed. Sometimes he's on top of the covers but often he's underneath them. For such a small dog he hogs a lot of space 🤣

RavenclawWitchy · 01/03/2025 20:12

No pets on the furniture here. Cats especially as they walk through their litter 😫

nicky2512 · 01/03/2025 20:13

Ddog used to sleep in his own bed on the floor beside my bed but for the last year or so he has decided he likes sleeping on the bed right at my feet.
He is almost ten now and he sleeps all night and barely moves. I actually think his being there helps me to sleep better.

TroysMammy · 01/03/2025 20:14

My cat can if he wants but because of my restless legs he chooses not to. If the night before he isn't told that the next morning is a lie in he gently mews at around 5.30am. When I do have to get up at 5.30am to go to work he rushes into the bathroom to watch me sitting on the toilet!

Simonjt · 01/03/2025 20:15

Our cat lets us sleep in her bed, the dog doesn’t join us, he doesn’t like being disturbed when he’s tired, he’ll sometimes join us in the morning, but gets very huffy if we dare move.

Where did you get your dog stairs? My terrier would love a set of steps as he can't get on the bed himself.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 01/03/2025 20:18

Dcat rules the roost! We leave our door open at night and she is in and out of our bedroom all night!

She really is a pain but she’s a ragdoll and they are very needy. She can’t cope on her own, the crying would destroy me!

She woke me up this morning growling at a noise outside, it was a low guttural sound, really chilling and not what you want at 5am🙄

GoneGirl12345 · 01/03/2025 20:20

Cat sleeps on our bed on and off depending on his mood.

If he starts the night doing zoomies on the bed and nibbling DH's toes, he gets shut out of the bedroom.

On calmer nights he will snuggle up, normally between me and DH. I love having him close but DH less keen as he does disturb us.

My view is that we decided to take him in and give him a home, and I feel privileged that he considers us a safe space to sleep next to. DH doesn't always agree!

TheWonderhorse · 01/03/2025 20:21

Dog is in with us, partly because I love his stupid head and partly because he's a tit and will steal stuff from the bin otherwise. The bedroom is the only door in the house he can't open.

He sometimes sleeps on the floor for a while to cool down and then jumps back up onto the bed and stares at my closed eyes until I sense his presence and lift the quilt. He's a lovely boy though and I wouldn't swap him.

neilyoungismyhero · 01/03/2025 20:23

The cat sleeps on the kitchen sofa as he makes a racket when he's with us. The dog sleeps in his basket on my side of the bed. He used to jump on the bed when he was younger and never disturbed us.

Ottersmith · 01/03/2025 20:30

Yep and crates are barbaric. Anyone who uses a (locked) crate is not a dog person at all and has no empathy.

Bupster · 01/03/2025 20:30

I lasted one night of the puppy in a crate before buckling and bringing him into the bed and he's been there ever since. I love it. Even when the little sod wakes me up because he thinks 5am is a perfectly reasonable time to get up.

I love the warmth of him, and how, if he's awake and I'm refusing to budge, he rests his soft chin across my face and neck - I swear I could stay like that for the rest of my life. I was away for a conference in January and I woke up every hour and a half missing his presence and dreaming of him 🙄(he was absolutely fine, didn't even miss me, the git).

I used a crate with my dog for a year or so as she was a rescue and was already happy in one.
Then she broke her leg, and was on vet orders to stay in it as much as possible. She was still young and energetic, so keeping her still was a nightmare. Her crate certainly had a place then.

faithspikebuffy · 01/03/2025 20:32

Yep, in bed under the duvet, wedged against me all night

bellocchild · 01/03/2025 20:33

Our 3 cats slept on the bed like lead weights, snoring gently! My DH used to say it was like being stapled to the mattress.

How do yo7 stop them getting on any furniture? Is someone there to stop them 24/7? Do you sleep in shifts? I don’t think cats and their letter are necessarily more ‘germy’ than dogs and pavements, incidentally.

Crunchymum · 01/03/2025 20:34

2 cats and if they want to sleep on any of the beds, then they do. If you try to shut them out one cries and the other tries to pull up the carpets to get into the room. It's easier to just leave all the doors ajar and let them decide where they want to sleep / roam at night.

The "crier" hardly goes into the bedrooms at all and hasn't slept on any beds for years but doesn’t like closed doors and cries for 10 minutes every single night when the last person goes up to bed. The other cat sleeps on my bed every other night? I usually wake as he's on my legs and I can't move!!

AcquadiP · 01/03/2025 20:34

When I had multiple dogs, no. Now I have just one dog, yes. She sleeps at the foot of the bed and I sleep better knowing she's there.
