AIBU to not want to go to war

TemporaryPosition · 28/02/2025 21:13

It's expensive and it hurts and it helps nothing, it just puts innocent sons, brothers, fathers, uncles and friends through the meat grinder. The only people who benefit are those who make a fortune from selling weapons and are granted contracts for reconstruction.

Haven't we learnt anything? What happened to "never again".

AIBU to really really really not want to be involved in any war?

Disingenuous.

What makes you think we are going to war then?

👏👏👏👏👏

1457bloom · 01/03/2025 13:05

In the past we could always rely on the yanks to save the day. That ship has sailed.

CassandraWebb · 01/03/2025 12:52

Exactly this. Like meddling in Brexit and the US elections, Ukraine is just part of Putin's and Musks end game

Yup, this. Russia is working it’s arse off to destabilise the west and realise Imperialist ambitions

cardibach · 01/03/2025 13:08

1457bloom · 01/03/2025 13:00

When did he do that? He was very conciliatory. Maybe too much so. Correcting falsehoods isn’t ’poking the bear’.

Starmer is being far too belligerent, it's not as if we can supply enough weapons for Ukraine to win the war and our army is non existent compared to Russia. US didn't agree to provide the backstop he asked for.

Could you give an example of this belligerence? Because if you mean supporting Ukraine against a foreign aggressor in the mildest of terms and correcting Trump’s falsehoods about ‘loans’ then you are talking nonsense. Maybe I’ve missed some belligerence though. Do share.

Hence Putin /Musk pulling Trumps strings to fracture relationships with Canada too. It's straight out of the Brexit playbook

1457bloom · 01/03/2025 13:10

What are you, some sort of Quisling?

Judging by the gang ho attitude of some of the posters you would think we were at the height of our empire!

Everyone needs a strong dose of realism.

cardibach · 01/03/2025 13:10

1457bloom · 01/03/2025 13:03

Where is the sense in either? Your children die either way. Might as well at least try to stand up for right.

That's the point, your children don't die if you accept you can't win and do a deal and your country is not left in ruins.

Are you copying and not quoting the post in the hope I won’t pick up that you are trying to refute my points? Because I check threads I’m on and remember what I’ve written.
You think Putin will be good for Ukrainians? That they won’t be exploited and killed if he takes over?

Quisling was a Nazi informant.

I think we know who the Quislings of this thread are.

bombastix · 01/03/2025 13:11

What is so slimy about all these posts is that the idea that the Russians would leave us alone.

They interfere in our elections, poison people, create terrorism in middle England, and spend time creating fear.

They don't leave us alone now. So we should keep our sanctions on them and learn from what happened in our past. You can't trust them, they lie, they don't stop interfering and they aim to control democracies and ruin them.

countrygirl99 · 01/03/2025 13:13

So OP would you rather be overrun by an army that Regards representing as a reward for it's soldiers? Age no problem from infant to OAP, all fair game.

You are realist in a very slimy way that does not recognise how Russia operates in the UK. You ignore all of that reality. Maybe you deserve the title I gave you.

The way he is banging on you would think we had the military the size of the US. The words are nice but Zelenskyy knows the war is over without the US, we are just background noise.

Porcuporpoise · 01/03/2025 13:15

That is - such an amazing insight.

Ennit – all these posters calling to call off the state visit, insisting Starmer should tell Trump to go fuck himself – you’re in dreamland.

The last thing we need right now is to burn bridges with the US or any other ally.

That doesn’t mean rolling over on every issue;
it does mean maintaining and cultivating the degree of influence we can exert.

We also rely on the US and are defensively weak without the relationship.

Very few people want to go to war.

However, history shows that appeasement does not always work. (Leaving aside the morality of trying). Sometimes war is imposed upon you.

This.

If you’re attacked and beaten up in the street you may ‘choose’ to fight back, but the only alternative choice is to give up and allow yourself to be murdered.

And if you are an observer to this event, you can make the choice not to join the victim to fight the attacker together, but before you know it the now emboldened attacker turns to attack you, and you are now alone and facing a worse situation than if you’d helped in the first place.

In the face of an aggressor, choosing not to fight isn’t really an option. That’s why this war is said to be existential for Ukraine.

Yanbu

Zelensky needs to back down before we have WW3, but he won’t and the UK will back him.

Too many lives have been lost already without the UK adding to the death toll with it’s own personnel for a war that has nothing to do with us.

Back down? He’d literally rolled over to Trump and was prepared to concede to USA’s extortionate demands of £350B of minerals in exchange for the £80B obsolete, aged arms that the USA were never going to use and sent to Ukraine. All he asked for was assurances that the west would protect them if Putin renegades on his side of the bargain and attacks them again.

Trump said that there was no peace deal to be discussed. He wants Zelenskyy to hand over half his country with no protections. Why would Ukraine agree to that?

1457bloom · 01/03/2025 13:17

Our sanctions have made no difference, waste of time.

Why is it that men feel this constant need for a willy waving contest, if we women were in charge it would never happen?

Like when Maggie was PM?

Catherine the Great? Margaret Thatcher? Isabella of Spain? I'm not convinced women are that much more peaceful. I'm studying Native American tribes roght now & while women were usually not warriors, though sometimes they were, they usually fiercely urged their men to fight. Or think of the women who handed white feathers to WW1 soldiers. That said, I think women are somewhat more peaceful, and their motives for war tend to be different- not better or worse.

Oh, you’re one of those OPs. Won’t explain yourself, post in depth, or engage in discussion, but instead will continually make little pointed questions and 3-4 word remarks to everyone else. Boring.

It's a posting style known as 'Sea-lioning' where constant petty questions are asked regardless of answers already received, usually with a bunch of false equivalences such as 'if you oppose Putin are you happy for your children to die'.

Seems to be a lot of it going around today.

bombastix · 01/03/2025 13:19

Well then these sanctions that have made no difference should be kept. They are a nice earner for the UK and oddly enough the Russians seem not to like them very much.

1457bloom · 01/03/2025 13:19

Trump is treating Zelenskyy like a distressed seller in a real estate deal.

Last time I looked, it was Putin and the Russians who invaded Ukraine and started massacring, bombing and raping people. Yet you tell Zelensky he's the one to back down?? I just don't understand this attitude. Putin is the aggressor. It's Putin's responsibility to back down, compromise, and get the hell out of other people's countries.

bombastix · 01/03/2025 13:23

In sum from our Russian posters

Don't support Ukraine

Don't do sanctions that don't work and give us our money back

Think of your children dying in a war

Don't think about what Russia does in the UK now

Don't think about our motivations in posting, accept our Russian reality
