AIBU to not want to go to war

TemporaryPosition · 28/02/2025 21:13

It's expensive and it hurts and it helps nothing, it just puts innocent sons, brothers, fathers, uncles and friends through the meat grinder. The only people who benefit are those who make a fortune from selling weapons and are granted contracts for reconstruction.

Haven't we learnt anything? What happened to "never again".

AIBU to really really really not want to be involved in any war?

Disingenuous.

What makes you think we are going to war then?

The mutterings from Starmer and the number of people in the UK who want to get directly involved in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine

Oh, please, do me a favour. The vast and overwhelming warmongers are men.

The op said if women were in charge it would never happen. History proves otherwise. Queen isabella, Catherine the great, boudacia.

Yanbu

Zelensky needs to back down before we have WW3, but he won’t and the UK will back him.

Too many lives have been lost already without the UK adding to the death toll with it’s own personnel for a war that has nothing to do with us.

Yes. All sovereign states should hand over huge chunks of land to their psychopath murderous neighbours.

Just like we did with Hitler.

Nodddy · 01/03/2025 10:42

Ofc no one wants to go to war.

But other things may be more important. Liberty and freedom aren't cheap.

Noperope · 01/03/2025 10:45

War terrifies me. The thought of having to bundle my kids in the car, leave the pets behind, all their toys, clothes and possessions. Head out into the unknown in search of safety risking bombs, bullets, and God knows what else. The constant risk of murder and rape from both invading soldiers and fellow countrymen. It's a horrific business and it hurts my heart that it is still so prevalent.

Cynic17 · 01/03/2025 10:48

Well, nobody wants to go to war but, equally, we have to stand up for what is right. And if that means we have to do more to protect Ukraine, then so be it. Check your history - we know that appeasement was a disaster in the 1930s. It just doesn't work.

We have some great (and seriously vicious) women pirates too

Why does he need to back down?

OxfordInkling · 01/03/2025 10:50

No one wants to go to war. But sometimes there are things worth fighting for.

Liz1tummypain · 01/03/2025 10:51

Nobody wants to go to war. Dictators, and I mean true dictators, mustn't be appeased or they won't be stopped and then it really would draw multiple countries into an even worse war than the current one in Ukraine.

Nobody is imposing war on the UK

Not yet. You won't have any say if they do, though.

Ffs.

Let’s say we had taken this attitude to Hitler. What would your life have looked like to date, if you had a life at all? Living under a fascist regime where anyone who dares to speak out is publicly executed or vanished? Ethnic cleansing virtually everywhere? Living in fear of being accused of virtually anything? Having no say at all in how your country is run?

The number of naive posters who think this is a pride game and concession is where the whole thing ends, is absolutely staggering to me

flapjackfairy · 01/03/2025 10:59

Well thatcher didn't start a war . She was the equivalent of Zylenski . She refused to hand over the Falklands to Argentina and booted them out quick smart. That is not warmongering.
And I agree...men should not be allowed to rule countries. the world would be a much better and peaceful world if women were in charge. They would bitch about other leaders behind their backs but would be the soul of politeness to their faces and everyone would rub along quite peaceably.

I think it's important to understand why Ukraine is seen as so important to peace in Europe.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO. This is why we are only indirectly supporting their war effort. However, if Putin takes Ukraine too easily he will have the domestic support and the remaining resources to annex the Baltic countries who are NATO members. He has openly expressed his desire to do this.

If Russia decide to invade a NATO country then we're all automatically at war whether we like it or not.

Violashifts · 01/03/2025 11:02

You sound stuck in 1914 op.

So what do you suggest? Just let Putin rule the whole world? Because that is where he will go if no one draws a line in the sand. Just like Hitler's plan. Or what if Trump decides he wants Europe as part of the USA, do we just shrug our shoulders and start using dollars.

CassandraWebb · 01/03/2025 11:05

I didn't want to go to court to fight my ex. But it was the only way to keep me and my children safe from his abuse.

I am a pacificist at heart. But pacifism in WW2 would have let to an even greater holocaust.
And pacifism now will allow a cabal of evil to run the world, centered around Putin and Musk.

The right thing is not to be an aggressor, of course. But the right thing is also not to capitulate to bullies and despots.

CassandraWebb · 01/03/2025 11:07

Violashifts · 01/03/2025 11:02

Agreed. War now will look very different from war then. Surely everyone can grasp that.

Putin's already at war with us anyway. There are russian cyber attacks happening all the time.

Finerthingsinlife · 01/03/2025 11:13

@TemporaryPosition

You are woefully out of date.

I served in the military for nearly two decades and served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Women would be conscripted as well. Women and men of eligible age and fitness.

Also, for those posters saying if a woman was in charge we wouldn't go to war:

Margaret Thatcher and the Falklands war

Golda Meir and the Yom Kippur war

Indira Gandhi and Indian-Pakistan war

Learn your history and don't make naive sweeping statements.

There would be a massive row every 28 days.

Thatcher was the worst prime ministers we ever had. She introduced the right to buy council houses, which has led up now to hardly and social housing, private rents are sky high and very precarious. She wanted social decline and she got it.

yes I agree
I am no Thatcher fan and hate what she did to certain sectors of the population BUT the point I was making is that she didn't go around inciting war and I stand by my point . If women controlled politics and had power it would be a much more peaceful world.

1457bloom · 01/03/2025 12:07

Starmer needs to stop poking the Bear.

ssd · 01/03/2025 12:12

@flapjackfairy , wasn't she friendly with Pinochet?? She might not have started a war but she liked like minded leaders.

As Julia Hartley Brewer asked Russia apologist Tice, if Putin invaded Britain, what part of our country would you be happy to give up?

To be fair, that's easy.

Wales. 👍
