AIBU to not want to go to war

TemporaryPosition · 28/02/2025 21:13

It's expensive and it hurts and it helps nothing, it just puts innocent sons, brothers, fathers, uncles and friends through the meat grinder. The only people who benefit are those who make a fortune from selling weapons and are granted contracts for reconstruction.

Haven't we learnt anything? What happened to "never again".

AIBU to really really really not want to be involved in any war?

Nobody is imposing war on the UK

I never said they were. I responded to your initial post of "to really really really not want to be involved in any war?" to point out that sometimes people are left with little/no acceptable choice

As Julia Hartley Brewer asked Russia apologist Tice, if Putin invaded Britain, what part of our country would you be happy to give up?

Depends what they're offering.

What do you mean, what happened to "never again"? There have been plenty of wars that we've been involved in, and genocides (that we haven't) since people started saying the clearly well meaning but ultimately ineffective sentiment of "never again".

Wtf?!

Snugglemonkey · 01/03/2025 00:13

Wtf?!

It's a story as old as time, borders change continuously. Scotland endured a hostile merger with England and the sky didn't come down. Is that worth sending your children to die?

Nobody wants to go to war, except it seems Putin who could end one any time he chooses by getting the fuck out of Ukraine, Trump who is clearly in Putins back pocket, and the fuckwits that put him on the ballot paper.

It seems, that in protecting our neigh, and keeping our promise to aid Ukraine, we may have little choice. Particularly following the betrayal of the cowardly, weak, ignorant Trump.

Anyone who is prepared to throw Ukraine to the wolves, can get to fuck. And yes, it is the middle of the night, I should be asleep, but I am so fucking angry with the Putin apologists that sleep is far away.

LordEmsworth · 01/03/2025 05:52

Do you genuinely think that we'd all be better off if Chamberlain had gone ah sure Hitler, take Poland and obliterate it?

Are you really under the impression that soldiers feel they are forced in to fighting when they don't want to be? I guess you don't know anyone in the forces, that's not how they think of war and fighting.

And are you honestly saying that if Russia invaded the UK, you'd be trying to make them welcome rather than trying to stop them? Joining in with them killing your next door neighbours when they object?

Many, many people died in the wars between Scotland and England, and a lot of them did indeed think it was worth dying for.

Surely if conscription happens women would be conscripted in equal numbers to men?

The Ukraine war is a major driver of increased energy prices and Gazprom cut the gas flow to Germany causing significant problems there over a winter. Most European countries are now aligning their energy infrastructure with the west because they don't want Russia cutting off gas and or electricity and leaving their citizens in the cold.

We're seeing the increased prices here as a result.

Why is it that men feel this constant need for a willy waving contest, if we women were in charge it would never happen?

Em Margaret Thatcher was happy to take the country to war!

Yanbu

Zelensky needs to back down before we have WW3, but he won’t and the UK will back him.

Too many lives have been lost already without the UK adding to the death toll with it’s own personnel for a war that has nothing to do with us.

Where do we draw the line? Let Russia take Ukraine but what happens when Russia tries and take Poland or Finland?

Natsku · 01/03/2025 06:52

We're already at war with Russia, its called Hybrid Warfare and they've been engaging in it against the UK and the rest of Europe for a very long time - election interfering, disseminating disinformation, hacking, sabotage, the list goes on.

War is not wanted, so in order to prevent it we need to deter those that do want it i.e. Putin. And to deter Putin, we need to stop him in Ukraine, otherwise he will carry on elsewhere in Europe. You might feel safe enough in the UK but the UK has obligations to its allies, including those of us bordering Russia who are at much more risk.

Thus is such a ridiculous post. Nobody on bloody earth wants a war. As if you're the special one there! Noone of us like the dentist or paying taxes either.

Also what Facebook posts are you reading to decide 'ear only happens so arms dealers profit'. War is a last resort, e.g., when another country invaded yours and bombs it (like Russia did with Ukraine).

Not really true. Thatcher was quite happy to go to war in Argentina.

Parker231 · 01/03/2025 07:01

TemporaryPosition · 01/03/2025 06:56

What makes you think that?

Because both men and women join the armed forces and women have fought for equality.

1457bloom · 01/03/2025 07:05

Only go into war if you know you are going to win, otherwise it's a pointless waste of lives.

Oh, you’re one of those OPs. Won’t explain yourself, post in depth, or engage in discussion, but instead will continually make little pointed questions and 3-4 word remarks to everyone else. Boring.

sashh · 01/03/2025 07:38

TemporaryPosition · 01/03/2025 06:56

What makes you think that?

Because it happened in WWII.

Few women were on the front lines, most were in things like the land army or stationed in the UK. It was only single women between certain ages to start with.

Equality.

Perhaps then war would be a good idea to put this decadent nonsense to bed
