Brand new DMs not selling on Vinted

Gingerbreadcottage · 26/02/2025 18:00

I put my brand new Doc Martens (pink desert boots) - never been worn, still in the box on vinted and fb marketplace and they’re not selling. They are the wrong size for me and too late to return.
Where else could I try listing them?
I’ve put them on for £85. They are currently sold out on the DM site.

OP posts:
SaveMeFromMyBoobs · 27/02/2025 09:26

I use vinted a lot and would never buy these at £85!

I could walk into a shop and buy for £90 and have all the protection that comes with it. Can try on. Protection on my credit card. Ability to return if not correct size etc.

If I bought on vinted for £85 - for starters vinted charges you 'protection' so the shoes would be over £90, plus delivery. So your shoes, without any protection or ability to try on are more expensive than buying yourself.

To compensate for lack of that protection I'd not want to be buying anything for more than a third to a half the price of it new.

It may sound like an excuse but the main reason I didn’t return them in time is I have ADHD and my memory and executive functioning is shocking.

Have you heard of the term ADHD tax? Definitely applies here. I can relate, it’s so frustrating when it happens but be kind to yourself. I have been extremely hard on myself for weeks for things similar but it achieves nothing, it’s done now. At least if you do get back around half the price it is better than nothing.

Why would anyone buy second hand shoes for nearly the same price as new ones?

Actually more once you’ve added buyer fee and postage- crazy!

Beeloux · 27/02/2025 09:31

No one will buy them second hand for £5 less than full price. Most people using Vinted are wanting a bargain and I’ve been scammed before for a £30 item. No way would I spend £85 on a £90 original item.

MissUltraViolet · 27/02/2025 09:32

Don’t think you’ll get more than £30-40 for them at a push. You’re definitely not getting anywhere close to what they cost you.

I’d stick them on for no more than £50 and hope a half decent offer came in. Nobody is going to take the risk/hassle paying higher, they’ll just order from a reputable retailer instead.

They’re actually on sale online for £84, so no reduction at all (a quid profit, in fact) 😁

Viviennemary · 27/02/2025 09:44

£85 for second hand boots is extortion. Even if they're described as not worn they are still second hand. About £15-£20 would be more realistic.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/02/2025 09:45

I prefer EBay because of the auction system. I recently sold a bag on EBay, started it off at £20 and ended up getting only £2 less than I paid for it.

80smonster · 27/02/2025 09:52

Try ebay, sale prices are higher and the buyers are way less cheap.

IDontHateRainbows · 27/02/2025 09:57

I think the market for second hand shoes is quite limited - most people will want to pay a bit more for something new. Also beware of selling on ebay and not accepting returns - although it's a faff to have to let someone return, it really puts buyers off with things like clothes and shoes where they can't be sure if it will fit. I recently was eyeing up a shirt at £40 but seller wouldn't accept a return if it didn't fit and I didn't want to take the risk so I left it. Would defo have bought had there been a return option.

Is OP not going to address that on the Dr Marten website the boots are in stock in a size 8, they are only £84, and next day delivery is free.

Your pair should be more like £40.

On the topic of shoe size, I'm a 43, which used to be an 8 in the UK (I live in England) it slowly seemed to turn into a 9. Now in some brands a 43 is now a 10! But my feet have a been a 43 or 27.5cms since I was 13.

Edited

I have exactly this problem. Shoe size deflation is definitely a thing in the larger sizes.

cardibach · 27/02/2025 10:13

wholettheturnipsburn · 27/02/2025 08:36

YABVVVU

£10 max

That’s daft. I’ve sold several pairs of DMs on Vinted for £40-50 recently. Lightly worn with no signs of wear but not new.

Then have a laugh at this one that quotes 6.5

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/shoe-size-by-country

Google first answer also suggests 6.5 to 7.

only on here could a teeny tiny come along with itty bitty feet, claim the average size is for elephants and have all the other little delicates fall over themselves to agree.

7 and 8 is a perfectly normal shoe size.

That says average shoe size is given in US sizes. So average shoe size in UK is a 5.5 (not 6.5) which chimes with my experience. 8 is obviously larger than average. It is incredible rude to refer to people as "teeny tinies" just because they have perfectly average sized feet!

cardibach · 27/02/2025 10:15

pinkdelight · 27/02/2025 08:54

Size 8 is huge. I'm a 7 and sometimes get man's sizes but rarely met a size 8 female and the style is pretty niche, so you're looking at a very specific buyer who might take time to emerge, if they exist.

I’m a 9/10. It’s not huge. I’m above average height for a bloke, why wouldn’t my feet be that size? There are lots of us around. I sold several pairs of mine (some to men, some definitely to women) pretty quickly priced at £50, took offers but none went for less than £35.

cardibach · 27/02/2025 10:19

wombat15 · 27/02/2025 09:17

Long is the word you are looking for rather than "huge".😂

Even large, or big. ‘Huge’ clearly has negative overtones. Maybe it was the poster being tone deaf…

I still don’t understand why people are putting the laughing emoji on the photo I’ve uploaded

I didn't put an emoji on the picture myself but I did balk a bit when I saw it. Personal taste of course but I think people are laughing because of how they look. They are a bit uhm... different. Certainly not to everyone's taste

Dont worry about it - always really helpful when people come after the fact and point out the obvious. Of course you should have and you know that. I am ADHD and I am sure that comes into it (people don't understand around ADHD paralysis) but actually over 40% of us don't return when we should. It's annoying but don't beat yourself up. I would do FB market place personally and just get as much as you can and chalk it up to experience.

cardibach · 27/02/2025 10:24

I’m going to say this again because you didn’t respond earlier, OP, and I’m not sure if you saw it - try taking them to a DM store if you can get to one. They are usually really helpful and may refund you even past the online return deadline. Depends if they think they can resell them I guess, and since they are still in stock…

Kbroughton · 27/02/2025 10:24

Also, putting laughing face emoji's is crual and unnecessary. Anyone who has done that should be absolutely ashamed of themselves for this childish and bullying behaviour. You are adults for goodness sake who should know that everyone likes different things. Ignore those people and just be happy you don't have to interact with them IRL.

I didn't laugh, but I imagine the reason people are is because you've put them up for a fiver less than what you paid for them.

That's ridiculous, people can buy direct from a reputable shop, probably with free delivery and a right of return for £5 more - I know you've dropped it since but not low enough based on others' recommendations here (but I'm not in Vinted, so what do I know?)

I don't understand your point - if you're a woman and are above average height for a bloke, then you're agreeing with me that your feet (and the rest of you) is much bigger than most women. I'm not saying the boots are disproportionate to a body. Just that they are big boots so they'll be harder to sell than average sized boots.

Could be that too, everyone has different taste.
I baulked at the price.

Whatever the reason, there is no need to put laughing emojis on. the OP is asking a genuine question and isnt arguing with anyone when they say the price is too high. It's childish and unnecessary and has caused the OP upset and confusion. As someone with ADHD that is the type of thing we dwell on, things without explanation.

My point is that even a second’s thought would have let an averagely empathetic person realise that ‘huge’ is a most unpleasant word and would be insulting.
In addition, ‘above average’ and ‘huge’ aren’t synonymous.

That says the country comparison is given in US sizes with the UK size in the comparison chart.

The comparison chart seems to suggest the UK average in UK sizes is a 4 or 5.
