WTF has happened to Facebook?

Well I know Facebook has pretty much had it's day anyway. But lately, my feed is full of the most disgusting, racist hate videos and also videos of dogs apparently on their last day before being put down. It's sick

I keep clicking 'not interested' but it just keeps on coming. Why the hell are those stupid videos on Facebook anyway??? It seems to be completely impossible to get rid of them.

Whenever I report anything, nothing is done about it. Now it appears to have taken over as a propaganda platform for the far right.

AIBU to think if Facebook need to get a grip on this?

I think it needs to he shut down, all be it temporarily until they can get a handle on all the crap.

Not to mention the stupid videos of women cleaning their kitchens! What is the actual point?

Like many of you, I don't experience any of these abhorrent posts at all.
Yes, I get a few ads and 'suggestions' but I just ignore them and, as someone said, do not linger over these things or the algorithm will think you are interested!

I use it as a kind of diary, storage for photos, for keeping up with friends (although not as many post now), but also for following bands that I like so that I am in the loop with any new gigs or material.
I am also in a group of fans for a particular band and it is SO good...a really close community where we share stuff, have a laugh and make arrangements to meet up at gigs etc
I see my book club groups, local info pages which are actually good for letting me know about traffic issues etc, and, I am even a member of the Dull Men's Club, which is actually very amusing and I have had decent conversations on it!
I work from home so do not have office colleagues, so we have a work group on which we can ask for help and advice when we need it throughout the day. I also have a business page that I use for posting/advertising.

To be honest, FB suits me well.
Instagram is not the same at all...it is all about the images on there and there is no real opportunity for proper conversations and meaningful interactions. I feel that it is much more about the 'likes'.

You can get that if you only use your friends feed. Some ads, but nothing nasty or ‘suggested’.

How do you do that as I cannot change the settings to only see friend’s feed.

Sounds like a lot of people are just viewing the generic newsfeed that comes up when you open Facebook. You need to click on feeds and then choose friends/groups/pages depending what you want to see. Sometimes I forget and think to myself what is all this rubbish, and then I remember to change to friends feed and it shows me all my friends posts!

Ok let me see if I can fix it on that option. I use it on the phone.

RaraRachael · 25/02/2025 12:07

I don't get far right or disgusting stuff but keep getting things popping up that I've no interest in like BBC sites from all over the country and pages I've never interacted with.

I don't know if this is an issue anywhere else but I live in an area with high road accident rates. Every time there's an incident, posters will come on with "Look at the footage from the scene" and "I was an eyewitness to this tragedy" shit which apparently leads to spam sites. I've reported them but they apparently aren't breaking any rules.

The last straw was one commenting on the death notice of a woman on the undertaker's page. How awful for the family,

I dont have this problem. I get posts from my groups and family/friends.

Absolutely nothing sponsored or suggested?

suggested and sponsored yes BUT only with things im into, joined groups, like pages on

My feed is just full of WWE, cat, weed, booze memes, Aussie rules footy, weather, parenting and music

Barcodescanner22 · 25/02/2025 12:13

I keep getting posts of mostly dead animals with their smiling hunters. Today's one though was two smiling hunters next to a still alive coyote with it's foot in a trap.

Mountainpika · 25/02/2025 12:14

Haven't read all posts so might be repeating. FB Purity weeds out most of the rubbish because you can select what you want to hide. I use it to chat with an assortment of friends worldwide. No problems.

feellikeanalien · 25/02/2025 12:21

I never look at any of the reels (unless it's the ones at the top from people I know) and my feed is usually cats, road trips through Scotland, unaffordable Coldplay tickets and the odd actual post from a friend.

I use it mainly to keep in touch with friends who are scattered all over the place, many of them abroad. I haven't seen any horrible racist or far right stuff on Facebook at all but X is a different matter. I am probably going to delete that.

Echobelly · 25/02/2025 12:28

It got enshittified and left to algorithms. I stopped using it 2 years ago when I found my feed was about 60-80% ads, unsuitable 'recommended' pages (it seemed to think I really like a lot of things I have a vague interest in and TV progs I had never watched) and random AI slop.

I think they're introducing ways to see your friends' feeds again but seeing as Mark Zuckerberg has capitulated to Trump and also declared women can be called 'objects' and my child can be called 'it' and 'mentally ill' on his platforms I will not be going back.

Which is a shame as FB was genuinely a positive and useful platform for me before they let it go to hell.

You can’t fix it, you have to select it every time you go on. I can do this on my phone though.

Or bookmark the URL and just access by browser:

https://www.facebook.com/?filter=friends&sk=h_chr

I have a couple of accounts and don't see streams of alt-right/violent content. However I always access by browser (I deleted the app after one of the many invasive privacy changes some years back) and I manage privacy settings tightly which seems to help. I suspect completely ignoring memes also helps.

I'm not a heavy user - largely its for keeping up with friends, acquaintances and old colleagues who are only on FB rather than sending outbound messages to the masses.

theemmadilemma · 25/02/2025 14:30

You can download your entire FB. A google search will give you directions.

I do wonder what some of you are looking at in the first place, or your friends maybe. It is algorithm based (to my knowledge), and bar more AI than I would like to see, I don't see anything like what's being mentioned here.

RaraRachael · 25/02/2025 14:41

I've tried to update my settings so that I don't see their suggestions but nothing seems to have changed.
These have just started appearing over the last week or so.
