WTF has happened to Facebook?

DoComeToMeKitty · 24/02/2025 18:36

Well I know Facebook has pretty much had it's day anyway. But lately, my feed is full of the most disgusting, racist hate videos and also videos of dogs apparently on their last day before being put down. It's sick

I keep clicking 'not interested' but it just keeps on coming. Why the hell are those stupid videos on Facebook anyway??? It seems to be completely impossible to get rid of them.

Whenever I report anything, nothing is done about it. Now it appears to have taken over as a propaganda platform for the far right.

AIBU to think if Facebook need to get a grip on this?

I think it needs to he shut down, all be it temporarily until they can get a handle on all the crap.

Not to mention the stupid videos of women cleaning their kitchens! What is the actual point?

Only boomers use Facebook now

& Mns it seems!

PassingStranger · 24/02/2025 22:13

If you paid you'd probably get less crap, it's cos it's free.
Local Facebook groups are saturated with what's on and people giving stuff away or whose letting off fireworks, as if they are going to answer?

NortieTortie · 24/02/2025 22:17

The worst I get are AI animal rescue videos which are always quite funny to watch

Boomers are all over 60. Pretty sure they don’t make up the whole 3 billion active users

TeamMandrake · 24/02/2025 22:28

I get cake decorating videos (I can't bake for shit) and people endlessly discussing Buffy the vampire slayer (which I have never watched).

Purplebunnie · 24/02/2025 22:38

I follow a lot of historical groups. I block anything I'm not interested in. I've done a lot of blocking lately 😂

Also follow groups for my crafting hobby

Edited I forgot the hobby 😂

Lovethegreydays · 24/02/2025 22:42

I'm not a boomer either, silly remark.

Massive decline in content though. I do think it was a great novelty a decade or so ago, it's just tired now although I find it useful for certain interest groups I'm in.

GoldPoster · 24/02/2025 22:47

I only use it for medical support groups, no friends. I don’t get shown anything or any advertising. The groups are useful

Porcelainpig · 24/02/2025 22:55

I left back in 2010, but rejoined under a different name purely to find support groups for SEN. I was shocked how shit it was ergonomically, really hard to use and just loads of crap I'm not even interested in. No far right shit yet, but I haven't friended anyone, just joined some groups. It was not the facebook I knew (and still hated) back in 2010.

Bring back MySpace! That was just a page with some tunes on pretty much.

This boomer thinks it is dated and boring. I have given up Twitter too as I find it to be disturbingly right wing which apparently is another primary boomer characteristic

LaBelleSauvage123 · 24/02/2025 23:18

Our local community FB pages are very useful, as are the autism support groups I’m on. I just ignore everything else.

Runingoncaffeine · 24/02/2025 23:20

I left FB years ago, and I’m so glad I did. Looks like it’s gone right down the pan. I’d get off of it if I were you

RatedDoingMagic · 24/02/2025 23:21

You can influence your facebook video feed. Just regularly do searches within facebook for keywords related to things you do want to see, and within the search results click "reels" and watch a few videos. You get more of the same for the videos you watch for longest and which you click on. My facebook video feed is full of kittens and bunnies, mother cats who have adopted chicks as kittens and mother hens who have adopted kittens as chicks, people who are teaching their rats, hamsters and guineapigs to do obstacle courses, people doing interesting wood-turning and pottery projects, lesbian comedians, and occasional gripes/complaints or demonstrations from people with disabilities about the inadequacy of provision of reasonable adjustments for their additinal needs in various public places. If you are getting unpleasant stuff stop looking at it and search for something nicer.

Maitri108 · 24/02/2025 23:30

They've stopped moderating it as various powerful men are pushing a far right and "free speech" agenda. People are being indoctrinated.

My Twitter feed did the same. One day I saw loads of lovely posts on books, films and nice stationery and then it was flooded with far right propaganda and violence.

FutureFakingFucker · 24/02/2025 23:35

Mines full of gardening, nature, art and small AI generated houses that would never pass building regs but I dream of living in one all by myself anyway.

Hattieandcake · 24/02/2025 19:33

It’s awful, I deleted it when it stopped being only
For people who were at university but had to make a basic account for one of my sons activities where they only post on there to notify about stuff !!??? I have no friends on there or activity other than this one group but still see a load of chavy crap. It’s so weird it needs deleting all together.

Ha ha! Twenty-odd years ago?

FutureFakingFucker · 24/02/2025 23:36

Blue Sky is loads better from what someone told me. Not owned by powerful billionaires.

Tortielady · 25/02/2025 00:01

A couple of weeks ago, I flooded my feed with items about books, cats, other animals, owls, other birds, environment, cheese, other food, Jewish interests, other religious interests, music, cartoons, property, gardening, art, pretty teapots, cute babies, and anything else that's nice and interesting and will hold back the racists, the cynics, the trolls and anyone else who peddles conspiracy theories, misogyny and other forms of filthy politics. I top up regularly with anything else I see that looks good and I'll keep doing it for as long as it works.

suburberphobe · 25/02/2025 00:03

I don't have this on FB at all. thank fuck

CurlyhairedAssassin · 25/02/2025 00:05

I don't understand why some of you are getting that stuff. I don't click on ANYTHING that is a suggested post. I don't click on shared posts from FB friends that are not from a source I already know and/or follow myself. My mum is guilty of sharing absolute shit sometimes, you know - urban myth warning stuff, and when I asked her where she got it from she said that her friend Liz's daughter got sent it by someone who worked in a hospital "they were warned by their IT people so it MUST be a genuine virus warning". She doesn't get it, no matter how many times I've told her to be careful not to just press "share post" without thinking cos there's so much utterly wrong and idiotic stuff shared around.

I AM a member of a few groups like gardening groups or interior design. I take all their posts with a pinch of salt, stay out of any arguments, and don't join new groups based on the ones I've chosen to follow myself. My privacy is locked down. I don't follow any political stuff. All on purpose.

I regularly look on FB to see what's been happening in my friends' lives, I like seeing them posting pics of their kids growing up, or a few from their holidays. Just like FB was originally. It's easy to pick out the original stuff like that from the shared copy and pasted shit if you just think about the effect of each click you do.

Or literally just don't search for anything just for something to pass the time. Only search for stuff if you really need to find it.

DoComeToMeKitty · 25/02/2025 00:12

It does feel like an indoctrination attempt which is really, really worrying.

Why can't they just get rid of the pointless memes and videos. And as for all those young women who use that really annoying, generic Facebook accent who actually have the nerve to try to be authoritative about making a child's packed lunch - just why???🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
NPET · 25/02/2025 00:13

I haven't had those but what I get every day now are sexist cartoons. I keep trying to get rid of them but they return from a supposedly "different" person. It's like msgs or emails from a creep who keeps changing his email addy to get round you blocking him.

NortieTortie · 24/02/2025 22:17

Well, you won't find them funny to watch after a week or so, the novelty wears off and by then you'll just be pissed off and irritated by them. But by watching the first few you've invited more and more preposterous things to come to your account. With probably loads of rage bait comments with them, with plenty of fake posts expressing shock or surprise or delight and disbelief at the content, then another load of tiresome posts by gullible people wasting 20 minutes of their lives explaining that it's not real, it's just AI, blah blah. Not realising that by engaging with it AT ALL they're just going to get more of the same themselves.

Just look at your friends' photos of their nights out and you'll be reet.

Well this Gen X'er has a sick child and finds the relevant Facebook groups a source of great support in what is a truly dire situation. But yeah, go ahead and make sweeping statements based on fuck all.
