WTF has happened to Facebook?

Well I know Facebook has pretty much had it's day anyway. But lately, my feed is full of the most disgusting, racist hate videos and also videos of dogs apparently on their last day before being put down. It's sick

I keep clicking 'not interested' but it just keeps on coming. Why the hell are those stupid videos on Facebook anyway??? It seems to be completely impossible to get rid of them.

Whenever I report anything, nothing is done about it. Now it appears to have taken over as a propaganda platform for the far right.

AIBU to think if Facebook need to get a grip on this?

I think it needs to he shut down, all be it temporarily until they can get a handle on all the crap.

Not to mention the stupid videos of women cleaning their kitchens! What is the actual point?

I'm guessing for me it could be because FB is tailoring what I see from what I look at. So currently gym stuff, houses, food and cars.

I've recently made a much more conscious effort to not allow cookies and other analytical tracking (as far as possible, it's not easy!) so I suspect that won't be helping, hence why they are pissing into the wind as to what to show me.

MermaidMummy06 · 24/02/2025 20:13

Look up 'enshittification'. This stuffing up of online social media/retail/any commercial site is so common it has a name.

Basically it's good for the consumer, then good for the seller, then greed screws it up & it becomes just sh*t and we move on.

I only use FB for travel planning groups and DD's dance school who still use it to announce stuff. I don't even see people posts anymore!

sakura06 · 24/02/2025 20:15

Like others, I have years of photos saved on there, so am loathe to delete it. I still have some interaction with actual people I know, but very little. I'm in some really helpful groups on there as well which I wouldn't want to lose access to. All the sponsored and suggested nonsense is really annoying though. I can only assume that very few people are using it compared to is heyday so it has to push all this crap.

I did delete X at the start of the year though and feel liberated!

Because Zuckerberg has jumped in on the Trump bandwagon.

Facebook has been in decline a lot longer than November 24.

hattie43 · 24/02/2025 20:17

I don't get political stuff but my feed is just so of ads it's not worth time any longer

cardibach · 24/02/2025 20:19

Nope. I only look on friends feed and some specific groups but I don’t get anything I wouldn’t potentially be interested in suggested to me. It’s an algorithm. To get that shit you must be encouraging it somehow.

Lilactimes · 24/02/2025 19:56

I think WhatsApp private message group is better - if you create various groups with your relatives and share your stories and photos and info on that it works and I find I don’t miss FB.

The benefit of FB is you don't need to be part of or invited to join a group. Any individuals can post and be followed by, or follow, any other individual.

It was a nice easy casual way to keep up to date with people from different parts of your life.

DetectiveSleuth · 24/02/2025 20:19

Agree OP. I’ve reported posts before which clearly breach their own guidelines and only ever had one removed. The bots clearly aren’t up to scratch.

changeme4this · 24/02/2025 20:21

Are your devices on family sharing mode? I’ve noticed things popping up on my FB that DH has generally looked at on YouTube.

Unfortunately there’s a lot of hate speech these days too (I’m not in the UK). It’s like people have forgotten how to hold a conversation or express their point of view without resorting to abuse and belittling.

I don't get anything even vaguely like that - and I'm on it multiple times a day due to being in a number of hobby related groups.

The algorithm shows you what it thinks you want to see. There is something in your viewing history, either on FB or more widely on the web, which causes it to show you this content.

I do get a ridiculous amount of cute videos of cats and dogs interacting, and, yesterday, Bra adverts. It makes perfect sense for FB to show me those, but I can curate my feed by rejecting them - NOT just closing them down, but going through the process of clicking the three dots and saying either why I don't like the ad or the I don't want to see that content.

I spent time doing that last night while watching TV - and it has meant all the Bra ads have gone today.

lifeonmars100 · 24/02/2025 20:22

Going the same way as Twitter ( refuse to call it the other idiotic name). Closed my account on Twitter a while back as the lies, the racism and the general trash posts were so depressing. An on Bluesky now and have just been on the book section and it was lovely! No coincidence that the men who own Facebook and Twitter are huge Trump fans...

thecatneuterer · 24/02/2025 20:24

All I get are funny cat videos. Cute pet crows and rats. Bears on trampolines ... Some ballroom dancers, loads of comedians, occasionally women choosing dresses and lately some people messing with scammers. Nothing remotely unpleasant and mostly quite entertaining.

rosemarble · 24/02/2025 20:25

Mine seems OK.
I'm active on a few groups (village, clubs), I mostly see my Friend's feeds and just click away any stuff I don't want (which is mainly dull ads). I don't see reels.

It's certainly not more annoying that MN!

theresnolimits · 24/02/2025 20:30

I’m shocked. I never get hate speech or disturbing stuff. It’s all a bit dull to be fair. The odd post from friends, reminder pix and local news. I never post anything controversial or political or interact with posts like that. I’m just dull I think.

user1471550643 · 24/02/2025 20:30

I don’t have this problem but I have got the privacy locked down both on who can send friend requests, view my profile and see my posts, so I’m not sure if that helps

RawBloomers · 24/02/2025 20:32

I don't get disgusting content, but I get very little I'm at all interested in (and clicking not interested does SFA to change the content). And then news from friends and families turns up days or even weeks after it's been posted. It's not a social network for me anymore, just an advertising feed.

VirginiaCreepers · 24/02/2025 20:36

Just gone on to look at my feed - restaurants, cookery, cats, theatre shows and books. Not seeing anything offensive except for an ad for the Daily Mail,

It is extremely clogged up with ads though- much worse than it used to be. As PP said, I think friends have stopped posting stuff so there is not much 'real' content. I'm using it for some community stuff and sales sites but it will become increasingly less relevant.

Bunny44 · 24/02/2025 20:40

I've not noticed this on mine... It might be what people you're connected with are watching... I tend to find that has an effect. I.e. I get loads of French videos since I'm connected with French people who presumably watch or like them.

LennBob · 24/02/2025 20:43

What is it with cats on these websites, a few people on this threads have mentioned cats. I have also seen pictures of cats sometimes on here.

lifeonmars100 · 24/02/2025 20:48

Davros · 24/02/2025 19:56

I don't have a problem 🤞 I don't post much, very rarely. I don't know if that makes a difference

I hardly ever post and never put up images and have yet to see any far right garbage but that said, I hardly ever log on so maybe they target people who use it a lot. Closed my Twitter account as it had become totally vile as opposed to quite vile and no way do I want to be in any way associated with anything that Musk is up to. I do like Instagram and Bluesky.

JimandPam · 24/02/2025 20:50

I started a thread about this the other day.

It is not a nice place now. On the recommendation of others on this thread I opened a Blue Sky account and it is a much nicer place

The more and more racist comments are being allowed to stand on FB http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/5277814-the-more-and-more-racist-comments-are-being-allowed-to-stand-on-fb

WorkingHarder · 24/02/2025 20:51

I don't look any more. All my oldest friends are on there and a lot of my friends from my old job, but the horrible videos and images are too awful to look at. I just don't go to the site any more.

BlumminFreezin · 24/02/2025 20:53

This.

I made the mistake of letting ds3 watch some Family YT stuff on my phone a couple of weeks ago...A for Adley, Ninja Kids etc.

Now I'm being absolutely bombarded with fucking awful, cringey family vloggers on FB.

anothernameanotherplanet · 24/02/2025 20:54

I'm getting a lot of holiday ads - mainly to the USA. I'm not going on holiday, haven't looked up holidays on any interwar sites.

About 1/2 - 1/3 are filled with comments along the lines of 'not for the next 4 years.'

Thisshirtisonfire · 24/02/2025 20:56

Erm I'm on Facebook and I've never seen a single one of those things.. and I use Facebook a lot.
I get videos of cute babies, flowers, feminist topics and comedy.
Your algorithm sounds messed up.. have you unwittingly liked a post or joined a group that is in someway affiliated with the far right?
