to think more negative effects will come out from Ozempic use?

Just read that the 30 year old singer Avery has been diagnosed with osteoporosis due to Ozempic use. Looks like this could be the start of many conditions coming out.

I know Ozempic is incredibly helpful for a lot of people but losing weight but then having osteoporosis does not seem worth it.

AIBU?

She was using it without a prescription, and despite it being specifically banned for use by those with an eating disorder (which she has)

You could say the same about any drug people take without prescription and ignoring medical advice.

Glorybox2025 · 22/02/2025 11:24

From googling -

I want to make it clear that I do have an eating disorder and did NOT get Ozempic from a doctor. It's very easy to get now, and many people with eating disorders are using it

people who abuse it will likely have negative effects from that abuse. That is not surprising. It's a drug, not a magic pill.

Justbrowsing2024 · 22/02/2025 11:25

How do you know she didn't have this issue beforehand due to the eating disorder? I am aware ozempic has side effects but she shouldn't have been taking it from what I read. I don't think ozempic is the sole reason

PonyPatter44 · 22/02/2025 11:27

Person misuses drug, person has unfortunate consequences. Literally, play silly games, win silly prizes.

Matrixremooted · 22/02/2025 11:54

I agree to an extent OP and it will be interesting to see what the data says over the next few years, but those who are taking WLI do not want to hear anything negative at all about them. As far as they’re concerned they are the golden panacea for their weight issues.

🙄
Believe it or not we aren't stupid, but there are significant health risks and consequences of being obese, as well as reduced quality of life. It's perfectly reasonable to weigh up potential risks against certain benefits and decide the benefits outweigh the risks. It doesn't mean we all believe WLI are a magic pill with no consequences.

ExtraOnions · 22/02/2025 12:24

Being morbidly obese I have a (actual and scientifically proven) much higher chance of Stroke, Heart Disease, Diabeties, High blood pressure etc etc etc. I would sooner work to reduce my chances of those, than worry about some unproven scaremongering.

3 stone in 3 months with Mounjaro

SilenceInside · 22/02/2025 12:31

Maybe it will be the start of many people having issues from getting drugs they don't need and using them totally inappropriately. I doubt it will be start of people who have had them prescribed properly and take them according to the guidance having issues.

This woman had a long standing eating disorder and abused a prescription medication that she did not need to use. No wonder she encountered issues.

Orangesandlemons77 · 22/02/2025 12:33

Osteoporosis is linked with underweight and eating disorders, I guess the link is with these rather than the meds themselves.

Orangesandlemons77 · 22/02/2025 12:34

"If you’re underweight or overweight, your risk of osteoporosis and broken bones increases."

Pootlemcsmootle · 22/02/2025 12:37

I read somewhere that it was rapid weight loss that could cause osteoporosis not the Mounjaro per se, so I think if the Mounjaro was used with a very healthy high calcium high protein approach with a slower weight loss than higher titrate, that might offset this risk?

Coolasfeck · 22/02/2025 12:39

I’m not an Ozempic or any weight loss pill user, however, I’ve noticed many people really want people who takes these pills to suffer in some way for ‘cheating’. It’s quite spiteful and weird.

KookyPeachViewer · 22/02/2025 12:40

Well I hope not because many people need it and have improved their lives thanks to weightloss injections.
All medication have side effects and people taking it unsupervised shouldn't discredit the drug but raise awareness.

InfoSecInTheCity · 22/02/2025 12:41

There absolutely will be more issues being reported and found because there are more people using WLIs and proportionally that means that the raw number of people who experience side effects will increase, but I don't expect that the number will be vastly different to that expected as a percentage of users.

I also expect that the majority of those who experience side effects will be those using it against advice or who have purchased through illicit channels and so cannot guarantee the composition and quality of the medication.

If used as prescribed, by the demographic who it is recommended for, in combination with a nutritious diet and suitable exercise, I believe it will be a significant benefit to the health of many many people.

ChangingHistory · 22/02/2025 12:42

Being obese also has health issues. I've no doubt they'll find more syde effects of these drugs even when used correctly but will they be worse than the disease they are treating?

All drugs have side effects, you decide whether you are willing to risk it fir the health gains.

StMarie4me · 22/02/2025 12:43

Of course it will. The prescription thing bears no relevance as huge numbers of people lie online to get it.

It's a ticking time bomb.

verycloakanddaggers · 22/02/2025 12:43

No idea about this specific case but drugs have the potential to cause longer term side effects that were not visible in shorter trials.

Think it's worrying how easy it is for people to take this drug in circumstances where it is not healthy to do so.

Yeah I don't know why this is.
If you lost a lot of weight, you will always live with the aftereffects and it will remain a forever battle to stay slim. I don't know why you'd envy someone with food issues even if they look good right now. I'd be jealous of a 'naturally thin' person if anything!

But huge swathes of people are doing that. There's posts on here asking how to lie to get it fgs. People with BMI of 26 using it. Absolute madness.

Possibly, but there’s people taking all manner of legal and illegal drugs they shouldn’t be on. Why pick on Ozempic specifically?

StMarie4me · 22/02/2025 12:49

@Nowvoyager99 because that's literally what this thread is about?

I could also mention the 50 or 60 cocaine deals a day that used to take place across the road from me, many of whom were 30-50 year old smartly dressed women and men.

Or the women in the 90s in the Hampshire village I lived in who all drank Diet Coke in the pub and snorted coke in the toilets to stay thin.

Happy now?

IesuGrist1975 · 22/02/2025 12:50

Perhaps but for those it was actually intended to help, those living with T2D and obesity, I believe the risks are less problematic than those of the existing disease.

The issues arise when people who do not really need to be using GLP-1 agonists use them- the fact someone with a ED can get hold of them so easily is appalling and a failure of the medical/ pharmaceutical systems in place.

MrsTWH · 22/02/2025 12:53

These drugs have been used for around 20 years for diabetics, so they do know what long term effects are.

If you take the drug, it needs to be properly prescribed by a doctor and you need to meet the criteria for it. If you don’t and you lie about it or buy it online off some random, then yes you’re likely to FA & FO.

They aren’t a magic pill, you still need to do the healthy diet and exercise - it just makes it easier to do long term. Fat people are abused for being fat, but abused for losing weight the “wrong” way. Ridiculous.

I have reversed my high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, indicators of NA-Fatty Liver disease have gone. There are side effects, sure, but longer term health benefits are worth it for me. Others might feel differently.

Yes thanks.

It really is like someone complaining their liver is fucked because they have been taking unprescribed amounts of pain meds. Then saying “ paracetamol is really dangerous, it ruined my liver.”

Thick as shit.

Mrsbloggz · 22/02/2025 12:53

I'm thinking that the osteoporosis is due to low body fat switching off the menstrual cycle?
