to think more negative effects will come out from Ozempic use?

Just read that the 30 year old singer Avery has been diagnosed with osteoporosis due to Ozempic use. Looks like this could be the start of many conditions coming out.

I know Ozempic is incredibly helpful for a lot of people but losing weight but then having osteoporosis does not seem worth it.

AIBU?

It's something like that, yup.

I'll tell for sure what is NEVER behind them: genuine concern.

Yes, I suspect Mnhq know it’s the same posters, but obvs can’t say, but I think it’s a small handful of folks doing this.

SilenceInside · 22/02/2025 18:12

@hehehesorry I'm sorry to tell you that being on Mounjaro doesn't make food seem like shit to me. I enjoy cooking and I enjoy eating, I just eat less than I did before.

@BettyBardMacDonald apart from those cancer patients who have died because were too ill/ thin to withstand surgery etc. what a rude and uninformed statement.

I'm very well informed, thanks.

Eating disorders aren’t rare, although they are rarely diagnosed unless someone is a six-stone anorexic. There are conflicting interests between the weight loss industry and the online sites selling weight loss pens.

I mentioned this because how can they know what was causing the bone loss the eating disorder prior to taking the meds or the meds themselves?

She must have lied to get the meds, as they do ask about eating disorders, but then she does say in the article she 'didn't get them from a doctor' so who knows what she was taking?

It's not ruined food for me either. In fact, it's done the opposite and really enhanced my enjoyment and appreciation of whole food.

What it has done, is ruin ultra processed foods for me. I no longer crave them in any way. Instead I have rediscovered enjoyment in different fruits and vegetables. Even salads taste better now without being smothered in my 'beloved' mayo!

CerealPosterHere · 22/02/2025 18:33

Effect does not equal causation.

so she has osteoporosis…how does she know ozempic caused it? Plenty of people have osteoporosis who have never taken it.

Totallymessed · 22/02/2025 18:40

I think some people are incapable of understanding risk or just statistics generally. Like the PP who read a headline in the daily mail about Ozempic causing blindness, either without reading the article, or without understanding it.

I actually think these drugs could be transformative, on a population wide level. People are seeing big improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol levels and other problems. It also has the potential to hugely reduce pressure on the NHS caused by weight related illnesses.

I think it’s more they don’t want to understand as they are either so jealous or resentful they feel compelled to post shite.

Osteoporosis is more common in women than men. You are more at risk if you are celiac, alcohol issues, eating disorders and menopausal. It is not routinely checked for. Most people realise they have it when they fracture their hip or wrist as these are osteoporosis fractures plus the gps and health service are terrible at picking up on it. I had a lady recently visit me for an appointment who had multiple vertebral fractures on her mri pmh alcoholism and celiac. Did the gp refer for a dexa scan no they didn't until I wrote to them.

I think Ozempic can cause issues with taste/nausea. My boss was on it for a while and he said that he felt awful.

ozempic is not used for weight loss in this country, it’s reserved for people with diabetes

wegovy and Mounjaro are the drugs available for weight loss.

so nobody is “stealing medication from diabetics” either

Good hopefully lots of us will have one on this thread without an assumption being made that anyone who mentions anything negative is completely anti weight loss drugs & judgemental against the people using them.

Hopefully lots of us will have an honest conversation on this thread without an assumption that anyone who mentions anything positive about the WLI is actually on it.
I am not on the weight loss injections and I am not on a diet . I am slim
However, I just think it’s strange that some people are so concerned about the side effects of weight loss injections but not about other prescription medication

Just because people don't post about it here does not mean they are not concerned about other prescription medication. I have been concerned about many other prescription medicine also.

It's the faux concern brigade. 'I just worry about her health being that weight.'

Moved on to 'I just worry about her health on that drug.'

You're not worried at all. You're judgemental.

MigGril · 22/02/2025 19:35

MiserableMrsMopp · 22/02/2025 16:54

This isn't true. I have a diabetic friend on Ozympic and she's on a dose of 10 (whatever that means, ml etc).

The doses are different, most diabetes will only need to take the low doses. But when dieting most go onto a higher dose. So although these drugs have been used by diabetes for years, they have been taking lower doses.https://onlinedoctor.superdrug.com/wegovy-vs-ozempic.html

Why do I have to? I have had discussions about my concern about other prescription medication but not on MN.

Is that ok for you?

It's awfully kind of you to care so much about prescribed medication other people take.

Evilspiritgin · 22/02/2025 19:40

I think like nearly everything else , bad side effects will come out at some point

i was on holiday in the us last year and they were showing adverts for wegovy and the list of side effects and drug interactions was amazing

Yes, I do feel that unknown side effects will come out over time. Because this is the way with all drugs and all diet choices - something new will come along for people to make a quick buck out of

According to Instagram currently, statins are now the devil incarnate because although they might save people from dying early from heart disease, they are going to cause dementia because brains need cholesterol.

Currently it's better to be carnivore or better to be vegan? Who knows?

I suspect that taking a drug that completely kills your appetite and does so by making you nauseous isn't ideal. To me that looks like an eating disorder made legit.

That's not how these drugs work.

SergeantDawkins · 22/02/2025 19:50

I think you’re right to expect more side effects of its (over)usage to come out OP.
We don’t know what long term effects it may have on the general population yet especially those getting it (or similar rip off versions) from non-GP sources.

I’ve read a few articles that have mentioned loss of muscle mass as well as fat.
Women typically begin to lose muscle mass from their mid 30s onwards anyway and I haven’t seen much about how muscle / strength is protected or ensured for women as they lose weight taking this drug but become weaker?
(The heart is also a muscle… worrying)
Ditto bone density.

What we do already know is that weight re-gain is common among people who have lost significant amounts of weight, one way or another, and that yo-yo dieting / rapid weight loss and gain, has well-documented negative effects on our bodies.

But we live in a society that values thinness over health.

SilenceInside · 22/02/2025 19:52

@Evilspiritgin how did the list of side effects and drug interactions compare to other prescription medication in the country you were on holiday in? If the list for Wegovy was amazing, presumably it's much much longer than for other prescription medication?

Yep, Mose miracle weigh loss solutions are just glorified eating disorders
