I’m not highly educated or hugely politically savvy. But like many people, I’m horrified by Trump and Musk’s approach, propaganda and ideology. It’s increasingly possibly they will take the world to a very dark place. I keep thinking, surely there are enough counter powers - people with power and influence, leaders from business, media, the arts, politics across the Western world to try and counter some of their rhetoric. I’m not naive to the immense power they hold, but surely reason, sense, logic and hope will win over?

No. He wants Ukraine to hand over half its mineral rights. He’s called its leader a dictator. He supports the Russian attempt to annex Ukraine. That’s far more than simply withdrawing military aid.

Just words. He's called lots of people lots of things. The rest of the World are free to support Ukraine if they wish

@Ablondiebutagoody is he though?
I thought he’d just suggested the Ukraine started a war with Russia?

I can see where he's coming from.

The best evidence we have now suggests that Putin believed that an independent, democratic Ukraine is a threat to him and to Russia.

He sees Ukraine's interest in joining NATO as an act of war.
Unfortunately, Putin’s decided that the only way to deal with that threat is through the use of overwhelming military force.

Missing the point how?

It’s not missing the point.

Yes, you’re right - over in the Middle East it’s chilling how similar it it is to WWII. While over on campuses, safe and warm, a bunch of stuck-up college students have been cheering on Hamas.

Nothing to do with Trump!

Trump has made parallels between what Hitler did and what he wants to do and the way he has operated and the events that have been unfolding are chillingly like WWII since his first term.

Trump is just withdrawing the US from (expensive) stuff that he doesn't think they should be involved in. Totally fair enough. Every other country in the World can step in to fill the void if they want to.

That’s a wildly inaccurate characterization

Alifemoreordinary123 · 20/02/2025 20:33

To the posters asking what my issue is - it’s the rewriting of history, the abolishment or circumvention of any authority that could hold him to account, release of convicted criminals (war crimes, fraud, witness tampering), the relationship with Putin, his criminal record and his racism. To make a start. I think the combination of the two of them, and their lack of empathy and focus on the good to be done in working with others, is terrifying.

Or there are resources within the region that he wants. Or both. Or lots of other reasons. He has still invaded another country in much the same way that Hitler did. His reasons are moot. It was wrong. He is the aggressor. He is the bully. He needs to be stood up to. As does the giant orange toddler.

Completely agree. And that’s without taking into account his attitude to women.

I don't think it's the"big" people who will rescue the world from Trump and Musk. I think it will be millions of little people who will just say fuck off you arrogant twats.

The people leading the opposition to them in America are the low paid civil servants.

The United force of millions of "little" people are who I m putting my trust and hope in.

Yes it is chilling how similar the situation is in the Middle East — a genocide is being carried out by a state headed by a facist and racist government.
Only this time instead of defending and fighting for the victims of this genocide, as the Allies did in WW2, the West is complicit in it. Huh,🤔 what gives.

Meanwhile the US is run by a bunch of people who care remarkably less for those that voted for them and would prefer people weren’t able to vote at all, or for that fact have human rights. Nothing to worry about though, I’m sure.

If you hadn't noticed he's getting involved in a lot of things that he doesn't understand properly ie foreign policy. He doesn't care about the outcome either.

He’s created a concentration camp in the Panama jungle. It took Hitler two months to create the first one. Trump took power less than a month ago.

rabbitwoman · 20/02/2025 20:40

Very powerful voices with huge platforms did speak up. From Hollywood icons to huge music stars with millions of followers, multiple news agencies, politicians around the world, they all ridiculed and liabled and vilified Trump and musk - and then we saw men in women's sports and spaces, ridiculous DEI quotas, and the most powerful, but most invisible, voice spoke in the election.

The American voters listened to all of this and still voted Trump, why do you think that was? Every single person who voted for him in 2024 knew exactly what type of person and President he was from 2016, and every powerful voice in the world spoke up against him and he STILL got voted in? Why do you think that was?

I am no fan of trump, by the way, but I am not as convinced that he is a warmongering misogynist idiot as i used to be.

Kamala Harris, trudeu, starmer et al tho? No thanks.

Who cares what he says? The end result is that the US will stop funding the Ukrainian war effort. Time for other countries to step up.........
No. Thought not. So Trump is a monster for withdrawing, but literally not one single other country is willing to do it without him.

You are of course wrong. No idea why you would possibly think this.

Ukraine has been independent and democratic for years, that isnt why Putin invaded. He invaded because hes a megalomaniac who still mourns the collapse of the USSR and thinks Ukraine belongs to Russia.
And Ukraine debating NATO membership isnt justification for him invading, it just speeded up what he's been trying to do piece by piece (Crimea, Donbass region) for over a decade.
Trump is a fool and he's been played. There is absolutely no nuance to his politics. He's told that supporting Ukraine = billions of dollars spent and that's all he can see. And his isolationist politics? What country has ever done really well without allies.

Europe won't even pay a fair share of the Nato cost. No wonder the USA is sick of them.

Yeah he should be. One of the supposedly most powerful armies in the world launched a full scale invasion of a much smaller, militarily weaker country, and 16 months on and hes still not winning.

coxesorangepippin · 20/02/2025 20:49

It'll never happen

Cos it's difficult to move out of your comfortable mansion on behalf of the peasants

I wish our government was being as forthright as Trump and Co are. I’m cheering them on. It’s world changing, yes. But in a good way.

What exactly do you object to? Cost cutting? Reducing financial waste? Stopping fraud? Efficiency?

Bots.

What? I don’t know anything about that. Have you got a link? Or may be it’s best I don’t know 😔
