Please don't fall for this. It will be a reporter poking us for a reaction which they can then use all our comments in the daily mail.

Pissing in the ocean. The population is rising by pretty much one million people per year

Locally I am seeing improvements. My GP practice is co-located in a large health centre with 2 other GP practices and a range of other services. However more recently some additional clinics have been added. For me this meant an online triage resulted in an appontment within 2 weeks with a muscular skeletal specialst at the health centre rather than waiting to see a GP then referral to hospital. At appointment I received links to book x-rays and scans at hospital dorect rather than wait for a referral and then an appointment letter. Additional xray and scan appointments have made available at weekends and mine were done within the week, no queue and easy parking. Follow up appointment with MSK specialist to discuss the results took place for 10 days later and treatment, again at the health centre, is booked for 2 weeks time.
Obviously there is still huge pressure in the NHS and a massive way to go, but can't fault my recent experience.

ritasuebobtoo · 17/02/2025 19:14

Lies, damned lies, and statistics..

Tontostitis · 17/02/2025 19:21

Ts like the planting of xbillion trees and the building of x million houses. A magical x million appointments with infrastructure to get it actually done balderdash poppycock and bahumbug.

Truetoself · 17/02/2025 19:38

Hmm and have these appointments been with an appropriately qualified person?
Was it a phone call with a "robot" or someome who was a messenger?

jezlifecoach · 17/02/2025 23:49

Cobblers! I want to believe this but I tried running the docs the other week and they said they didn’t have any other appointments that day… or at any point in the future! Um, okay… I’ll just not get sick then

SierraNose · 17/02/2025 23:53

Not all those 27 people would need an appointment. Not buying labour's spin (at least without a bagful of salt) but that's specious reasoning.

suburberphobe · 17/02/2025 23:54

. The population is rising by pretty much one million people per year

Really? You would need to give figures to back up your claim.

You sound racist.

tattychicken · 18/02/2025 00:39

I've been waiting since Feb 24 for appointments with a consultant for various issues. All these appointments finally came through from December onwards, and all have been at the weekend or in the evening eg after 6pm.

Some have also been with a Spire hospital, am having a colonoscopy on a Saturday morning.

So yes, I believe it.

sleepwouldbenice · 18/02/2025 01:03

A step in the right direction....

But if it wasn't compared to a time of strikes and we knew that the mix of appointments was effective it would be better

Stirabout · 18/02/2025 02:09

If you read the whole article I think it’s fare to say…..let’s wait and see because Labour have jumped the gun with this hasty announcement that compares the latest figures against a strike period the year before.
Thats not comparing like for like !

From the ONS
these figures for 2022 are about average for most years ( outside of a crisis and in terms of %s )

@tattychicken Yes, my Dad had a Sunday appointment with a consultant a couple of weeks ago, he was delighted. It's progress, slow but at least it's happening.

All the people moaning
and they wonder why the UK is a mess.

All the people here saying it BS
and they wonder why the UK is in a mess.

The tories caused brexit
they caused the strikes in the NHs
and let people suffer.

then when some one does at least one thing about it
stopping the strikes and getting more done

they try and dumb that down

and they wonder why the UK is a mess.

they should get a mirror and seek help

tallcurvey · 18/02/2025 03:59

@Tallerandtall

there are so many people here just dumbing the country down
they are all so pathetic I agree with you.

i wish all these people would just sod off and so away

theybhate to admit labour is making a difference
they hate they have to pay for it

i was with a rich guy the other day going on about how wonderful his new Ferrari is for about a million and Miami g the NI increases cost him 200k.

he could not see it even though the country is in a mess caused by Brexit farage and the tories

i have to put it down to bigotry and lack of intelligence!!!

I’m not a fan of the Government, but the fact that they stopped the strikes and have therefore enabled appointments to rise is a good thing, and therefore it’s a reasonable comparison.

DetectiveSleuth · 18/02/2025 06:04

In other news, Rachel Reeves is fucking up the economy and we’ll all be even poorer than before.

Oh, and did you conveniently forget about the fact that during the same period 12 months prior, there were more than 12 days of doctors strikes.

I’m sure you can do better OP, even if you do vote Labour.

Winter2020 · 18/02/2025 06:07

My teenage son had several visits to the GP and a paediatrician and they refused to refer him for any investigations.

Only 2 visits to A&E resulted in a referral and ultimately his Crohn's diagnosis.

An appointment without any action is just an appointment. Gatekeep any help, refuse to refer people and waiting lists will fall.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 18/02/2025 06:08

Blert · 17/02/2025 11:22

Are we supposed to get excited at 2 million appointments? There are over 55 million people in England. So one person in every 27 got an “appointment” that they wouldn’t have had that year.

I also notice it was supposed to be “operations, procedures and appointments”. I wonder how many were operations and procedures rather than e.g. routine blood pressure checks.

I sincerly hope that no one is using an appointment for a BP check in 2025 really.

Blu3F1re · 18/02/2025 06:16

Yes it is great news particularly so for those of us who have had to fight for treatment and appointments for our children the last 14 years. Having a government that actually cares about the NHS instead of wanting to get rid of it is huge.

ExtraOnions · 18/02/2025 07:19

I phoned for a GP appointment for my daughter last week, rang in the afternoon and got one the next day.
i needed to go to knee clinic, and got an appointment within 6 weeks, with an MRI 2 weeks later.
Plus our NHS dentist has been calling to encourage us to make check up appointments, which they have never done before.

Something is definitely getting better

SwanOfThoseThings · 18/02/2025 07:23

It is good news, but round here it's only certain types of appointment that are affected, You can now get what you might call quick diagnostic tests such as an ECG or ultrasound very quickly - a new centre has been opened for these - but it is still a battle to see a GP or Advanced Practitioner.

They certainly are making a difference 🙄

Not everyone is a fan of Labour. And telling people to go away just because they don’t share the same political views as you is just childish.

ilovesooty · 17/02/2025 11:44

It's progress I think @Tallerandtall .

It will be acknowledged by some people, but others won't acknowledge it, as you're already finding out.

You mean people are tribal? Shock horror.

It’s almost as if 5 mins can’t go by on here without a Trump Derangement Syndrome thread while it was strangely quiet about all the horrors Biden (and Kamala) inflicted on women.
