isn’t this what we wanted!?
so let’s see how other things progress and stop moaning.
it is good progress.

Probably 2 million appointments for those who came off the boat and get private care. Those statistics should not be taken into account, it’s should be 2 million appointments for Joe Public. Statistics can be manipulated easily to back up whatever side of the story your on, too a point that they are meaningless.

Measurable? I don’t think so.
Why don’t you want things to be better? Is your identity so tied up with believing Tories are fab and Labour hopeless that any evidence of Labour achieving something is an existential threat?

Edited

When I feel an improvement for myself and my family, I will let you know. But you keep cheering for Labour even though they are a total shambles. Tories were just as bad in my opinion. I vote none of the above!

JohnTheRevelator · 17/02/2025 12:40

As soon as I heard this,I thought I bet they've doubled up on appointments,or even trebled up. When my DD was in her teens (late 1990s) she had to attend a hospital clinic twice a year for a health condition. I gradually came to realise that practically everyone in the clinic waiting room was double booked with another patient, even though there was only one consultant dealing with the appointments! No wonder we were always waiting at least an hour past our appointment time. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they've gone even further this time by treble or even quadruple booking patients.

JanefromLondon1 · 17/02/2025 12:47

Probably means they've sent out 2m letters advising patients of their appointments, a great deal of those will be for appointments no longer needed, appointments that have passed or appointments for patients who have already died whilst waiting for an appointment.

I work in the private sector and we get a lot of patients pushed onto us by the NHS when they know that there is naff all chance of us taking their case on due to co morbidities which put them further down the NHS waiting list but if they can say they've had an appointment, regardless of whether it moved them on in their care, they can say whoop whoop they've been seen.

wherearemypastnames · 17/02/2025 12:47

Sone people are never happy are they

tallcurvey · 17/02/2025 12:51

@edwinbear

the tories could have solved the strike they didn’t they let people suffer.
so it is a win.

you are lucky you are healthy and/or can afford private health care.

dear god

ScholesPanda · 17/02/2025 12:51

It's a step in the right direction (although a lot still to do). So, YANBU.

But it seems a lot of people don't want to believe Labour could do anything good, whatever they do.

tedlassoforprimeminister · 17/02/2025 12:53

Any increase is positive. However it's disingenuous to compare with a strike period.
I would also like to know how many of these appointments have been offered by staff working overtime because that is not sustainable. It's not the cheapest way of doing it, and staff get burnt out if they are working extra hours every week.

Perseimmion · 17/02/2025 12:54

Justsayit123 · 17/02/2025 11:21

It’s a load of BS as there isn’t the staff to be able to offer this.

I came on to post something similar. Where I live there’s a shortage of nurses yet the university can’t run a nurse training course because there aren’t sufficient applicants. This needs tackling, rather than making empty promises.

As I say, there will always be those who believe everything they're told if they think the teller is made of gold.
Thank you for saying you would keep the numbers simple for me-some might say that is condescending, even if you do seem to be a tad confused.

And those who will believe none of it if it’s not what they want to hear. Stop pretending you’re the only person with critical faculties. There are more appointments. Waiting lists have fallen. Could some of it be less significant than it sounds? Possibly. But it’s not gullible or stupid or partisan to believe in facts.

Where did I cheer for anyone? I cheered this improvement.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/02/2025 11:46

Yes it's what we wanted and I'll be the first to cheer if it actually happens, but anyone who's been round the block a few times knows how figures can be manipulated so it's a case of wait and see

This

hopefully its good news though

its fucking impossible to get an appointment where I live, lack of doctors unfortunately, have to fill out an econsult at 8 am and quite often the appointments have all gone by 8.30

MargaretThursday · 17/02/2025 18:05

That's so exciting. With over 60 million people in the country that means there is one extra appointment for me every 30 years.
I shall consider for the next 29 years what to use it on.

The data was compared against a time last year when junior doctor were on strike so pretty much invalid! You need like for like data to make true comparisons.

Because the figures were compared with this time last year when there was strike action so it's not comparing like for like.

cardibach · 17/02/2025 18:17

I get that @twistyizzy
Who settled the strike?
How long would it have gone on otherwise?
How much bigger would the waiting lists be as a result?
It’s an improvement. Why do you want to suggest it’s not?

It's an improvement on the number of appointments available during a strike? Ok but that's scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of improvement isn't it?! I mean couldn't exactly be worse......

@cardibach.
I think the point is it is not a fact,

Several posters have pointed out the many ways in which this statement announcing 2 million extra appointments could have been manipulated in order to persuade people that there has been a big improvement when there has been no such thing.

Any government making a statement does not make that statement a fact, particularly with this government who has got so much wrong so quickly and who is in desperate need of a good news story.

I know you don't want to believe that and it must seem a little like discovering that there is no Father Christmas but you must not believe everything a flailing government-of whatever hue-tells you because sometimes-many times- it will not be true.

Believing every government statement you hear, taking it at face value, is a little like eating everything you see. Best to investigate before completely trusting it.

Anyway, I know there is no persuading you of your belief that 2 million extra and brand new appointments have been made and that Sir Keir et al have not manipulated the figures or definitions so I'll leave you with the warm feeling that the dubious statement was meant to generate. although it has failed to convince most people.

cardibach · 17/02/2025 18:25

Ok. It’s all terrible. There are fewer appointments and the waiting lists haven’t dropped.
Happy now all of you?

Credit where credit’s due, but if you think this means I’ll shut up about the mess Labour are making with the economy on the back of this, you’re wrong.

But I’m not so naive as to simply accept this at face value. The Government need to earn my trust before I blindly accept this kind of news… and their track record to date hasn’t done that I’m afraid. I’ll have a look at the detail, and make up my mind… and if it is as presented, that’ll be a “credit” in my account of them… they have lots of “debits” to offset though before I’d be happy.

unsync · 17/02/2025 18:42

This falls under the "rearranging the deckchairs whilst the Titanic sinks" category. Local Authorities need major assistance with Social Care so that bed blocking can be prevented. Improving hospital discharge is one of the things that will help free the whole system up.

Edited to add look on the bright side, @unsync; Kim Leadbeater's tying to remove the promised court oversight which was used to get the Assisted Dying Bill over the line, so perhaps the problem will solve itself Confused

itsjustbiology · 17/02/2025 18:48

I know of 15 people myself included who were put on the 2 week cancer pathway all of a sudden and my Dh had an MRI scan last sunday afternoon..unheard of before.

CerealPosterHere · 17/02/2025 18:48

There’s definitely weekend appts appeared since Labour came into govt. I’ve had 3 weekend appts including 2x consultant appts (different specialists) and also an MRI.

i can’t quite get my head round it…..if a consultant sees me on a Saturday is he having a day off in the week to make up for it. So less appts in the week? Or is he doing it as an extra? Is it locum shifts? I mean there’s not more doctors?
