Dd is Amalie, cousin is she’s naming her daughter Amelia.
DC are close and see each other regularly.

AIBU to think that’s basically the same name? Im not going to say anything and so will have to get over it but just think it’s really weird.

OP posts:
TwinkleLights24 · 16/02/2025 18:28

It’s a different name. People are so bloody precious.

RaspberryScrubs · 16/02/2025 18:28

They are different names, imo.

MintTwirl · 16/02/2025 18:28

It’s fine and not even the same name. I had cousins with the actual same name growing up and nobody cared.

Ohshutupcolinyoutwat · 16/02/2025 18:29

No it isn't the same name. YABU.

BallerinaRadio · 16/02/2025 18:29

You mean you didn't trademark Amelia and all variations of it when you named her?

Rookie mistake

We had Big Tom and Little Tom cousins when I were a nipper, we still call them that now, in our 40s and 50s, lol.

MaybeItWasMe · 16/02/2025 18:29

Not the same name at all and YABU.

Slobberchops1 · 16/02/2025 18:30

It’s a different name

Wanderdust · 16/02/2025 18:30

As far as I know, it's pronounced Ama-lee so nothing like Amelia?

TwentyTwentyFive · 16/02/2025 18:31

It's not the same name. Amalie and Amelia are incredibly popular so its not like she's only using it because it's inspired by your daughter's name. I honestly can't see why you'd be annoyed.

Fencehedge · 16/02/2025 18:31

It's not the same at all. They'll probably get shortened to Mills and Mels anyway.

Wanderdust · 16/02/2025 18:32

Apologies, just reread and realise Amalie is your DD's name! Is that how you pronounce it?

MarshmallowClouds · 16/02/2025 18:32

Different names and they are cousins, not siblings.

i have three cousins called John, two called David and numerous Uncle Franks - we never get confused.

wafflesmgee · 16/02/2025 18:32

You should have picked a rarer name if you didn’t want this, I currently teach a class with 1 Amelia 1 Emilia 1 Amahlia and 1 Amalie
get over it

TickingAlongNicely · 16/02/2025 18:33

Isn't that the most common girls name still?

Savemefromwetdog · 16/02/2025 18:34

Nursery is full of Amelie’s, Amelia’s, Emilia’s, Amalia’s but they are different names

WimpoleHat · 16/02/2025 18:36

They’re close enough that it would be odd if you had two children called Amelia and Amalie. But it’s fine for the children of two cousins, I’d have thought - the girls won’t even share a grandparent.

LoveWine123 · 16/02/2025 18:36

You should not have posted here about this issue. Mumsnet’s motto is that you don’t own a name and you will get no sympathy. I’m with you on this…they could’ve picked something different.

LunchtimeNaps · 16/02/2025 18:36

Yeah it's similar but maybe she's liked that name for ages and you got in there first. TBH there's bigger issues to stress about.

Spirallingdownwards · 16/02/2025 18:37

Different names and it's not as though you even spell yours Amelie anyway.

Fencehedge · 16/02/2025 18:37

I think the fact they're similar is actually very cute and a real compliment

Choose to think positivily. It actually doesn't really matter, eh?

DisforDarkChocolate · 16/02/2025 18:37

They sound very different.

SleepDeprivedButAlive · 16/02/2025 18:38

Different names, they sound very different, Amalie is spelled differently to the traditional Amelie which would make them remotely similar in spelling.

I don't get it. It's not the same name.

RazzzzzzzzzlllllllleDaaazzzzllle · 16/02/2025 18:40

@RaspberryScrubs my brother is called Tom and so is our uncle. They were always big Tom and little Tom and still are now - in 50s and 80s lol

BodyKeepingScore · 16/02/2025 18:40

Two different names... non issue
