Cousin copied dds name

pileduphigh · 16/02/2025 18:27

Dd is Amalie, cousin is she’s naming her daughter Amelia.
DC are close and see each other regularly.

AIBU to think that’s basically the same name? Im not going to say anything and so will have to get over it but just think it’s really weird.

Ok, happy to be told I'm being unreasonable!
and like I said would never consider mentioning it.
Just not something I would have done the other way round. I'm pregnant (probably why I'm being sensitive) and in the process of choosing names and actively dismiss names similar to child relatives we expect to see.

It’s a different name. Although they start with the same letter, Amalie starts with an “ah” sound but Amelia starts with more of an “uh” sound.

Forget it and move on.

Is your dd supposed to be Ameliè? Your way is spelt wrong for a start

Pinkychilla · 16/02/2025 18:43

I think it's weird to do that and I wouldn't do it as the names are too similar

oakleaffy · 16/02/2025 18:48

My friend has a Whippet called Amelia - shortened to ''Mealy Worm'' 😆

pileduphigh · 16/02/2025 18:49

If she'd asked (which obviously she doesn't have to) I would have said it isn't a problem

I guess I was expecting her to at least lightheartedly acknowledge how they were so similar.
I was told over text so had time to react and decide not to mention it but just thought it was a bit weird.
I will get over it though

YABU. It's not even the same name. Do you really expect your cousin (not even your sibling) not to use her favourite name just because it's similar to your DD's name?

Glad you're not going to say anything though. My SIL had a strop about something similar and it's ruined the family relationship.

Notgivenuphope · 16/02/2025 18:50

Ridiculous. Two different names.

RitaFromTheRanch · 16/02/2025 18:50

Amalie is much nicer so I wouldn't worry about it.

RampantIvy · 16/02/2025 18:52

RaspberryScrubs · 16/02/2025 18:29

We had Big Tom and Little Tom cousins when I were a nipper, we still call them that now, in our 40s and 50s, lol.

Similar here.

Honestly @pileduphigh no-one cares.

😂 The irony! That's the wrong spelling too. Amélie.

LIZS · 16/02/2025 18:53

Are either even born yet?

pileduphigh · 16/02/2025 18:55

Yes my dd is already here, her's will be soon.
I am pregnant with DC3.

It’s a different name. People are so bloody precious.

It's a totally different name.

I'm pregnant (probably why I'm being sensitive) and in the process of choosing names and actively dismiss names similar to child relatives we expect to see.

Oh go on, call your next DC Emilia or Emile if it's a boy. Just to up the ante and assert dominance.

Call your baby No 3 Amelia then. (Copy her DD's name.)

Cross post! 😆 Yep, just copy her @pileduphigh !

BusyMum47 · 16/02/2025 18:58

@pileduphigh

It's not the same & no-one owns a name anyway?!

When spoken, they sound different enough.

InTheWild · 16/02/2025 19:02

They might look similar written down but they sound different, Amelia has more syllables.

They are cousins, I think it’s a non- issue.

I actually have cousins with the same name, who are a year apart. No one thought it was strange.

Chuchoter · 16/02/2025 19:03

Good grief! Not even the same name!

marylou25 · 16/02/2025 19:06

Oh for goodness sake they are different names and even if they weren't so what! I have first cousins who have same first name and same surname, it's not exactly impossible to live with! Other than having to say 'the other Mary' the odd time when they are together it's not a big deal.

VickyEadieofThigh · 16/02/2025 19:06

MintTwirl · 16/02/2025 18:28

It’s fine and not even the same name. I had cousins with the actual same name growing up and nobody cared.

My partner is British Greek. If you've ever seen 'My big, fat Greek wedding' - specifically the scene where the Greek dad introduces the whole Greek family to the wasp American parents (Nick,.Nick, Nick,.Nicky...) - it's quite an accurate representation of how the same names tend to be used in Greek families because children are named in a sequence after their grandparents.

PandaTime · 16/02/2025 19:08

All names share letters with other names. Amalie and Amelia sound nothing like each other. Even if it was something like Alisha and Alicia, it's still fine for someone to use a name they like. It's not about you.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 16/02/2025 19:08

On a totally different note - by your daughters name and your user name if you are from a small town in Scotland and are a hairdresser I know who you are. If you’re not - even better.

Gonners · 16/02/2025 19:08

I have four cousins called Peter and three called Martin, all on my mother's side of the family (children of her many, many sisters). They all have different surnames and somehow survived to adulthood without confusion. Goodness only knows how many Peters and Martins there are in the next generation ... in fact, they are old enough to be grandparents by now so we need to consider the generation after that too. The horror, the horror!
