Cousin copied dds name

pileduphigh · 16/02/2025 18:27

Dd is Amalie, cousin is she’s naming her daughter Amelia.
DC are close and see each other regularly.

AIBU to think that’s basically the same name? Im not going to say anything and so will have to get over it but just think it’s really weird.

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 16/02/2025 19:09

They're second cousins, and the names are pronounced quite differently, so I'd try to just move on if I were you.

Your child is going to meet a lot of other little girls with her name or names that are similar as she progresses through school - Emily, Amelia, Amalia, Millie, and Emilia are all very popular. It's one of the downsides of choosing a name in the top ten.

SlaveToAGoldenRetriever · 16/02/2025 19:09

Get over yourself OP.

SouthLondonMum22 · 16/02/2025 19:09

Different names and they are only cousins. No biggie.

Popular names at the moment too, especially Amelia.

Hwi · 16/02/2025 19:12

Probably showing my age - but there was a whole episode in SATC - 'she stole my name! Bitch!' So idiotic, they made it into a comedy!

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/02/2025 19:16

Oh dear! I gave my son the actual exact same name as a cousin's ds. I have 11 cousins and she's my closest one too (as in the one I spend most time with). The age difference between the two boys is probably about 8 or 9 years.

Luckily she doesn't seem to hold it against me.

JaneBoleynViscountessRochford · 16/02/2025 19:16

Almost every male in my family has the same name and if it isn’t their first name then it’s their middle one. It’s fucking weird but it does mean I can’t get worked up about cousins being called similar names. As others have said, you will come across a lot of children with the same name as your daughter.

8misskitty8 · 16/02/2025 19:17

She has not copied your DD’s name.

They are different names, and are not pronounced the same either.

Vaxtable · 16/02/2025 19:22

It’s a completely different name stop making an issue when there is none

Sunnydiary · 16/02/2025 19:23

You are definitely being precious.

Let it go!

Hazylazydays · 16/02/2025 19:25

Don’t be so ridiculous … give your head a wobble!

Parky04 · 16/02/2025 19:30

LoveWine123 · 16/02/2025 18:36

You should not have posted here about this issue. Mumsnet’s motto is that you don’t own a name and you will get no sympathy. I’m with you on this…they could’ve picked something different.

They did!

ClarasSisters · 16/02/2025 19:33

Thread title "cousin copied child's name"

First line "my child is called <this name>. Hers will be <completely different name>."

Hmm
IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 16/02/2025 19:36

Out of four cousins three of us named our daughters after our grandmother. The "girls" are aged 40, 30 and 13. One has grandmother's name as her first name, the other two have the same middle name. No one is in the least bit offended.

NiftyKoala · 16/02/2025 19:36

I wonder if the cousin is on mumsnet? Pretty embarrassing for OP if she is 😆

pearbottomjeans · 16/02/2025 19:38

RaspberryScrubs · 16/02/2025 18:29

We had Big Tom and Little Tom cousins when I were a nipper, we still call them that now, in our 40s and 50s, lol.

Little Tom might hate that though? Sounds like absolute classic eye roll territory - not a big enough deal to make a fuss but also not ideal. I mean, imagine being Big Hannah or something? Ugh.

I agree they’re different names and no one owns a name, but it’s rather unimaginative at best.

Zone2NorthLondon · 16/02/2025 19:38

Two different names, and you know what no one has dibs on a name
Amelie is v popular name, one should and could have anticipated it being replicated in family and friendship group

Yorkshiredolls · 16/02/2025 19:40

My cousin named her daughter exactly the same as mine and I was a little bit put out for a while and then… I got over myself because who cares. The kids think its great they have a “cousin” with the same name 😂

MidnightMusing5 · 16/02/2025 19:41

They’re different names.

Hooliewhat · 16/02/2025 19:42

We see similar posts on MN far too often.

  1. Nobody owns a name
  2. It really really doesn’t matter unless the name is very unique e.g Boden-Zara, thingmebob, flossytop AND they are going to the same school and social circles
  3. it makes you sound possessive and also likely to have been a bridezilla, and are a future schoolmum nightmare and later on. a MIL from hell
Worry about the big things

Names become popular because people hear them and like the way that they sound. Take it as a compliment.

Katela18 · 16/02/2025 19:44

MintTwirl · 16/02/2025 18:28

It’s fine and not even the same name. I had cousins with the actual same name growing up and nobody cared.

This!
I have a brother and a cousin both name the actual same first name (different middle names). It's no biggy

Tiswa · 16/02/2025 19:45

They look a hell of a lot similar written down than when spoken to me the names sound nothing alike and feel completely different to say in the same way Joseph and John are different (both mean the same as each other but sound different)

Yep, same here. All boys are Thomas or have it as middle name.
Never been an issue

Wherehavetheyallgone · 16/02/2025 19:48

Sorry, YABU.

Obviously contain the same letters, but different names. I'm sure there are sets of sisters somewhere in the world called Amelia and Amalie. I wouldn't do it, but people do because (though similar), they are DIFFERENT names.

i'm afraid you have to smile through gritted teeth and get over this.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 16/02/2025 19:48

Christ, my great grandmother had children with the actual same name 😂.

It's not an issue and quite different sounding OP, don't cause grief where there isn't any.

LilacLilias · 16/02/2025 19:49

I think they're different and actually sound quite sweet together. They wouldn't have the same nicknames either
