Cousin copied dds name

pileduphigh · 16/02/2025 18:27

Dd is Amalie, cousin is she’s naming her daughter Amelia.
DC are close and see each other regularly.

AIBU to think that’s basically the same name? Im not going to say anything and so will have to get over it but just think it’s really weird.

OP posts:

Amalie and Amelia are absolutely not too similar-sounding for second cousins. Bizarre to think otherwise.

pearbottomjeans · 16/02/2025 19:50

I know siblings called Henry and Harriet and I find that pretty weird tbh (Harriet comes from Henrietta after all!)

Goldengirl123 · 16/02/2025 19:50

Don’t be ridiculous

Takersgonnatake · 16/02/2025 19:51

It’s a very similar name but really if you’re going to call a kid after a film that spawned a million Amelie’s you can hardly now complain every time you meet another one 🤣

ZoeCM · 16/02/2025 19:51

I can't believe you think she copied you. It's not even the same name, and Amelia is incredibly popular. It's not all about you!

Love51 · 16/02/2025 19:51

I always think that giving cousins the same name is a bit much, but where the parents are cousins and the kids are second cousins, why would anyone care. And in full cousins I only avoid it because my kid was born in the same month as her cousin, so very close in age. If there's a gap it is more obvious who you are on about with context (Amelia is walking now! Is clearly little Amelia not the 8 year old!)

LilacLilias · 16/02/2025 19:51

I'm thinking Lily and Milly 😍

Maddy70 · 16/02/2025 19:52

Different names. You're being weird

x2boys · 16/02/2025 19:55

Well the kids are second cousins and its not the same name
I come from a big Irish family I have a seventies double barell name so say "mary -ann " and my actual cousins name is ann we have two other cousins with very similar name Emma and Gemma it's not a big deal.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 16/02/2025 20:00

Not the same name.

JanglingJack · 16/02/2025 20:00

Amalie?

Nobody is copying that name. You've taken the beautiful French name Amelie and driven a common sledge hammer through it.

Neurotoxic · 16/02/2025 20:01

The thing is she may have liked the name before you used it and dreamed of naming her future baby that. If it were me I wouldn't let the similarity get in the way just because someone else got there first.

TheFairyCaravan · 16/02/2025 20:01

My cousin named her son the same as DS2, I couldn’t give a toss tbh. When DS2 was born, his name wasn’t popular, by the time my cousin’s son was born it was in the top 10 and had been for ages so it would have been ridiculous to be precious over it.

user2848502016 · 16/02/2025 20:02

Except she hasn't has she because they're different names?!

Ladamesansmerci · 16/02/2025 20:08

Even if it was the same name, who cares. In the 90's every other kid was Jessica, Hannah, Laura or etc

adviceneeded1990 · 16/02/2025 20:09

MintTwirl · 16/02/2025 18:28

It’s fine and not even the same name. I had cousins with the actual same name growing up and nobody cared.

This. I have the same name as one of my cousins. Big age gap, huge family but spent time together - no one has ever given it a thought.

JessyCarr · 16/02/2025 20:21

JanglingJack · 16/02/2025 20:00

Amalie?

Nobody is copying that name. You've taken the beautiful French name Amelie and driven a common sledge hammer through it.

Or taken the Germanic name Amalie and spelt it correctly.

Redbone · 16/02/2025 20:22

Two different names and, as is oft stated on MN , nobody owns a name.

Cakeandusername · 16/02/2025 20:24

I think it will be fine as it’s a different name and also a very different style. Amelia is a very popular name. I can understand you being put out if it was an exact copy with same spelling or even Amalie & Amelie but it’s a totally different name.

Deadringer · 16/02/2025 20:24

We have an Ava, an Eva, an Eve and an Aoife (e-fa) in our family, who cares?

Inastatus · 16/02/2025 20:26

You’re being ridiculous OP.

If she'd asked (which obviously she doesn't have to) I would have said it isn't a problem

I guess I was expecting her to at least lightheartedly acknowledge how they were so similar.
I was told over text so had time to react and decide not to mention it but just thought it was a bit weird.
I will get over it though

They're not the same, you'll sound silly if you start saying that to family members etc.

Trabbling · 16/02/2025 20:33

We had a Tony (male - big strapping chap) and much younger Toni (female, petite). They were known as Big Toe and Little Toe.

Nobody got confused, and nobody got the hump 😄

So did I. Two Johns. Nobody even thought it was odd.
