low key ? For example someone says " does this top not low key go with these jeans" it seems to be used all the time now. Maybe annoyed is not the right word but it's irritating 🤣 . Light-hearted post really. Are there any sayings that seem to be "trending" that annoys you ?

I low key agree with you.

HelenaWaiting · 12/02/2025 14:27

Allyship. Drives me up the wall. The word is allegiance.

Icanflyhigh · 12/02/2025 14:29

Gaaaaah!

My DD says this ALL THE TIME! It drives me nuts!
Low key this and low key that......

It'll be replaced with something equally annoying soon enough I guess!😂

Madamecholetsbonnet · 12/02/2025 14:31

Is this a northern thing? Not heard it here in my little corner of SE.

I was just thinking the same, I've never heard this (also in SE).

sparrowflewdown · 12/02/2025 14:34

No, never heard of it used it that way.

I think it's a younger generation thing. DD who was at school in the SE until last year used it a lot, despite me pointing out that it made no sense :)

jollygoose · 12/02/2025 14:36

On a game show when the compere wants to invite applause they say Give it up for .. . It really gives me the ick.

It might well be..I am in the north. I hear it all the time, I am not even sure people use it correctly🤣

Yes it's absolutely everywhere.
My sis uses it loads:
I'm low key thinking of going blonde again.
I low key love that show.
I'm low key annoyed at my boss today
Etc etc
She's 34!

It's youth/ youtuber / Internet speak. Probably American but not 100% but definitely hear it alot on American youtube videos

Sorry, I should have clarified, I work in a Sixth Form College, so am surrounded by Gen Z speak but not hearing this in Susssx.

Agree it’s annoying.

I hate it on shows like The Masked Singer when Davina shouts “YES!” At people. I don’t get it.

PointsSouth · 12/02/2025 14:45

Phrases that irritate...there are so many...

"I'm not gonna lie..."

Well, I should bloody hope not. However, it does rather suggest that you considered lying and, on this occasion, decided against. I shall bear that in mind in future, and work on the principle that whenever you tell me anything, it's always a toss-up as to whether or not you're telling the truth.

HideousKinky · 12/02/2025 14:48

I have never heard low key used in this way
What does it mean?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 12/02/2025 14:48

Never heard of low key, if I heard it I'd probably think of the name Loki.

"Feds" for the police always makes me laugh - it's pathetic.

Davros · 12/02/2025 14:50

I've never heard of it used this way. Presumably it's the yoof and not old gimmers like me

Edited

This is one of mine too! Do you usually lie but this is the exception ? 🧐

Elliania · 12/02/2025 14:52

People online say "n then" instead of "and then" and other similar uses of "n" instead of "and". IT'S TWO EXTRA LETTERS FOR THE SAKE OF FUCK.

TheyAreNotAngelsTheyDontCareAtAll · 12/02/2025 14:53

It doesn't even make sense!

Newmumburnout · 12/02/2025 14:53

It's real definition is something simple, not drawing attention. People tend you use it in weird ways though

RockStarMartini · 12/02/2025 14:54

‘Hard no’ seems to be cropping up everywhere and I find that very irritating 😡

Liz1tummypain · 12/02/2025 14:56

YANBU.

For me, my top 2 that make me want to scream are -

"It is what it is" - pointless. A waste of words.

Also when people talk about someone' " bandwidth ". What do they mean? Scope to take on work? Just use a normal expression for Gods sake. Don't use poncey management-speak.

ThejoyofNC · 12/02/2025 14:56

Oh I hate it, along with majority of 'internet speak'.

Verv · 12/02/2025 14:59

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 12/02/2025 14:52

Yes what does it mean? I've never heard it used like this.

subtly / quite / quietly / sort of / not in a way that you regularly reference.

Its an annoying and nebulous phrase.

and as a previous poster added hard no, im adding hard agree - drives me nuts.
