low key ? For example someone says " does this top not low key go with these jeans" it seems to be used all the time now. Maybe annoyed is not the right word but it's irritating 🤣 . Light-hearted post really. Are there any sayings that seem to be "trending" that annoys you ?

OP posts:
stayathomer · 12/02/2025 15:22

‘Turned around’ is just a saying though- if someone said someone was driving them up the wall would you ask in what car?

MonetWaterlilies · 12/02/2025 15:23

'Carve a career'. What does that actually mean??

tobee · 12/02/2025 15:24

stayathomer · 12/02/2025 15:14

Something dropped last night (eg song, album)

Yes it gives a very low key vibe

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 12/02/2025 15:24

DD (15) has a whole load of them that also often make no sense...

  1. aesthetic.. 'I want my room aesthetic', 'that top is really aesthetic'

  2. "I'm not gonna lie" - arrrghhh

  3. "From the gecko"... I think this is supposed to be 'get go' which is still annoying.

  4. "I could care less" - you mean you couldN'T care less?

  5. I writ.. - you mean 'I wrote'? Or are you a time traveller from the 1500s?

denhaag · 12/02/2025 15:24

Newmumburnout · 12/02/2025 15:22

Yes !

OK, I'm gonna leave you with your turning/turned and low key.
I seem to be well able to communicate with most people 😁

treesandsun · 12/02/2025 15:26

If you know you know - eugh just fuck off

butterpuffed · 12/02/2025 15:27

People saying something gives them them the ick.

Posters ending a sentence with , no?

Allyship. Drives me up the wall. The word is allegiance.

We had this during an equalities assembly last week. I was genuinely confused, thinking it was a colleague's honest mistake and thinking 'How embarrassing for her!'

Jertzy · 12/02/2025 15:28

"Reach out" should only be used if you're about to touch faith!

I dislike anything "ready".
"Wedding ready", "Holiday Ready", or of course the infamous advert "Beach body ready"!

"Oven ready" was probably the only acceptable usage until it was used to describe a political matter!

tobee · 12/02/2025 15:30

Slightly different maybe, but have you noticed that everyone is "welcoming a baby" or they "welcomed their first baby in 2021" etc in news articles? Does anyone say that in real life? Why can't they just say "had a baby"? It isn’t offensive, is it?

Seems to have replaced the overused term in the msm when everyone was a "national treasure". Although now though everything is "iconic". 🙄

TorroFerney · 12/02/2025 15:33

Verv · 12/02/2025 14:59

subtly / quite / quietly / sort of / not in a way that you regularly reference.

Its an annoying and nebulous phrase.

and as a previous poster added hard no, im adding hard agree - drives me nuts.

Nebulous is an excellent word, we should all be using it more , along with purview and wheelhouse . Like others have noted heard low key used like that but I have middle aged colleagues and my teenager doesn’t use odd language well not in front of me.

Exasperated24 · 12/02/2025 15:34

Elliania · 12/02/2025 14:52

People online say "n then" instead of "and then" and other similar uses of "n" instead of "and". IT'S TWO EXTRA LETTERS FOR THE SAKE OF FUCK.

‘… for the sake of fuck’ - and that’s not annoying?

This has now become my new something that annoys me. Why rewrite the good old-fashioned ‘for fuck’s sake’?

For fuck’s sake.

Is this a northern thing? Not heard it here in my little corner of SE.

Me neither.

gladwhiskers · 12/02/2025 15:36

Invite instead of invitation.

Though today's odd usage often becomes tomorrow's correct language.

Hhoudini · 12/02/2025 15:41

I say ‘it is what it is’, it’s shorthand for ‘It’s shit actually but talking about it is going to make no difference and actually is just boring for you and for me so I’d rather we talked about something else’.

WhatterySquash · 12/02/2025 15:44

I'm terrible for being annoyed by words and phrases so I have a long list, but I haven't heard :"low key" used in this way - if I do it WILL annoy me though! Grin

Agree abut "welcoming" a baby and also I've been irritated by the use of "shared" being everywhere recently. "The former couple share a son, XXX aged 7" and even worse "shared a kiss" makes me want to scream.

ANameForOscar · 12/02/2025 15:44

When people type out that pretend pause thing.

"That's... that's not what it means."

I don't know why it irritates me so much!

Hhoudini · 12/02/2025 15:44

butterpuffed · 12/02/2025 15:27

Ending a sentence with a question drives me batty

Yes!! - to both.

And many more, inc. anyone writing gonna, kinda, sorta, loose when they mean lose, ect when they mean etc., not to mention starting posts with ‘Me and..’ or ‘Myself and…’*

When I’m a dictator I shall have everyone who annoys me thrown into a rat-infested dungeon for a fortnight.
That’ll larn ‘em. 😈
*for misusers of ‘myself’ I think I’ll make it 3 weeks.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 12/02/2025 15:46

Liz1tummypain · 12/02/2025 14:56

YANBU.

For me, my top 2 that make me want to scream are -

"It is what it is" - pointless. A waste of words.

Also when people talk about someone' " bandwidth ". What do they mean? Scope to take on work? Just use a normal expression for Gods sake. Don't use poncey management-speak.

OMG "It is what it is" . Of course it fuckin is or it wouldn't be what it was.
My #1 grrrr

Cherryandpineapple · 12/02/2025 15:48

.

passthegripplease · 12/02/2025 15:48

Turned round and said. Did you actually turn or spin round to speak? More wanky expressions. I just reply, no spinning required as I'd get dizzy and fall over. Fun to watch not so amusing for me though.😀

MagpiePi · 12/02/2025 15:48

JollyHolly30 · 12/02/2025 15:01

I can't stand 'it's giving..'

ie "this skirt is giving 70's glam" or
"it's giving 'obsessed with your ex' "

😡

It'll morph into 'gifting' soon, I bet! 😂

Nobody just gives anything to anyone anymore.

Madamecholetsbonnet · 12/02/2025 14:31

No I don’t think it is. I’ve never heard it used in my little corner of the UK

RedRobyn2021 · 12/02/2025 15:50

I live in the north and say this, not in that context though

I'll say in reference to plans

"Feel like doing something low key this weekend"
