low key ? For example someone says " does this top not low key go with these jeans" it seems to be used all the time now. Maybe annoyed is not the right word but it's irritating 🤣 . Light-hearted post really. Are there any sayings that seem to be "trending" that annoys you ?

Slapping! From what I can debunk, it means good??

I'm not being funny- no you're not, you're about to be rude!

JollyHolly30 · 12/02/2025 15:01

I can't stand 'it's giving..'

ie "this skirt is giving 70's glam" or
"it's giving 'obsessed with your ex' "

😡

RuthW · 12/02/2025 15:03

Never heard of it before unless describing an event.

The wedding was a low key affair.

denhaag · 12/02/2025 15:03

OP said "does this top not low key go with these jeans?"

I'm really not one for nit picking over typos in MN, but is that a typo or actually what people are asking?
If it's the latter then I am really out of touch as I have never heard that sort of question before. I have a teenage son.

I would say "I'm going to a low key event, does this top look OK with these jeans?"

Bumcake · 12/02/2025 15:04

I’ve never heard someone say it, but I see it written a lot. It never seems to add anything to the sentence.

The thing I hate is the increasing use of mom instead of mum. I know some areas of the UK have always done it, but not to the levels I see now.

Confused30somethings · 12/02/2025 15:04

'I turned around and said'

Chances are you weren't turning around when you said it......

denhaag · 12/02/2025 15:04

It's youth/ youtuber / Internet speak

Ah well I am not a youth, nor a youtuber and my internet speak goes as far as using emojis.

Actually what people are asking. That's the exact phrase used.

For myself it's fab for fabulous.
Cannot stand this.

What's wrong with saying "I turned around and said"?

ThatEllie · 12/02/2025 15:05

Lowkey annoyed with the posters that didn’t bother to read the OP and are posting random phrases that annoy them. 😂

Cattery · 12/02/2025 15:06

Low key? No. “Can I get”. Rage-inducing. It’s so rude and unnecessary

People adding ‘ness’ onto words, instead of using the correct ending - I’ve heard ‘suitableness’ and similar. Also, adding unnecessary endings, for example ‘I just want some peacefulness….’ No, you just want some peace.

Many people also use the word ‘less’ when the noun they are describing is plural. ‘Less’ is a singular word. The plural version is ‘fewer’.

I don’t think grammar is taught in schools in the same way as it used to be. I just find it grates.

What's wrong with saying "I turned around and said"?

Yes, absolutely!
Thanks for reminding me of this one.
My husband uses it, I could never understand what the point of turning around was.
I'm not British by origin, but that phrase definitely makes me see red.
Also, noone else has ever used it 😳

Brenzett · 12/02/2025 15:08

ThejoyofNC · 12/02/2025 14:56

Oh I hate it, along with majority of 'internet speak'.

lol!! I just love to ‘SLAY ALL DAY!’

I have heard this alot. Not recently though, and I agree it's annoying. Why are you always turning around when speaking 🤣

Brenzett · 12/02/2025 15:10

I agree with OP that it’s internet speak but I actually don’t mind low key

lol was internet speak wasn’t it ? All be it emerged circa 2008 or before

I HATE ‘rock up’

passthegripplease · 12/02/2025 15:11

So I'm going to town. Why use the word so, in speech where it's not needed?
Super is another one, super excited for this. No, you just sound a complete wanker.
Heck, there are so many irritating expressions!

Cattery · 12/02/2025 15:12

You did amazing. No, you did amazingly well. Jeez

What does it add? ‘I said’ means just the same thing.
