Did I handle this situation wrongly? Man at train station

I was in the waiting room at a busy station and a lad who looked to be in his early 20s was standing at the door with his hands down the front of his trousers. I looked to make sure it wasn't pockets but it definitely wasn't.

I am just a bit fed up of what I've seen recently from predominantly men on public transport. Loud sniffing/snorting every 2 seconds, farting, burping, spitting. Most are not like this but it's hard to take the train these days without any of the above.

Anyway I said to the man quietly, why do you have your hands down your trousers in a public area, that's disgusting.
With hindsight I should've just reported him to the train staff. He started shouting at me and I just walked off. But as I say I maybe should've just reported it.

Ok, I get the general outrage at this, but can I give teenage boy's perspective? (not me, my DS). He wears shorts under his joggers, which are hugely baggy, as it's the fashion. He puts his hands inside his joggers for warmth. I know it looks terrible and suggestive, but I've called him out on it many times and he swears it's innocent. I'm not being gullible - his hands aren't moving, and he would consider it grossly disrespectful to do something like that in front of me.
So yes, it looks bad, but I don't think they realise how bad it looks.
As for noise, etc - I'm sorry, but girls can be just as bad.

Ask him why he can't warm his hands in his pockets or wear gloves please Smile

@H0P I have, believe me, we've had these conversations. It is not easy to get through to a 16 year old, but I do try. I'm not saying I approve.

That’s not what they are doing they are keeping their hands warm not touching themselves 🙄boys have been doing this since I was young it’s nothing new and really not a big deal. Could you imagine the outrage if this was a man saying this about a woman. Practice what you preach

I cannot even imagine a situation where a woman has her hands down her trousers in a public place. I have certainly never seen it but I have seen plenty of young men with their hands down their trousers in the street.

Perhaps someone needs to tell them that an effective and less gross way to warm your hands, if you don't have gloves, is to put them under your armpits.

Actually, I agree that alot of this behaviour on the part of young men is about copying the stance of rappers that they admire in a way that suggests that they are carrying a weapon. Definitely, something that I would report to Transport Police, if I suspected they really were concealing a weapon.

I only ever see men under 30 doing this, usually teens. In joggers. The same demographic that are voting reform and following Andrew Tate. I weep for my daughters

Exactly this

Absolutely report all such things to British transport police Text 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40, tell them the date, time and station it happened on. No matter how minor the infraction seems. These little reports often build a picture of escalating behaviour. And public transport have so many cameras and microphones on all form of public transport. I went to a course my work recommended for the people using public transport and it was very good and informative. They want even the small issues reported.

That sounds good. Where I am from police or similar authority wouldnt even realise why people would report such things.

How do you know who they vote for

Maybe their parents didn’t pick them
up on it when they were younger?!
Mum of boys here and they all go through a bit of stage of it, thankfully my older ones have grown out of it but I seem to be saying ‘take your hands out of your trousers’ a lot to our 5 year old.
I think it’s a combination of a comfort thing and habit 🤦‍♀️

HappyChilli · 14/02/2025 22:52

I voted unreasonable only because I think for your own safety you shouldn’t have said something. It’s absolutely disgusting and you would have been right to report him to staff.
