We're English, living in Scotland for a very long time. It's always been noticeable, but we're in a place where there's a lot of English people, so we don't see it as much. However, we were out with a Scottish friend a week or so ago , she had a few drinks and made a crack about English people, and I was really cross, as we try really hard to support Scots sports as much as we can. I've seen four posts today on Facebook all wishing France well in the Six Nations, and one particularly awful one which was sending this joke:

OP posts:

‘What seems to skip over the heads of Welsh and Scots is that most English people don't actually believe we will win yet you all continue to believe that we do.’

you need to tell your media, your commentators and your smug team captains that then…

Off topic, but you don’t live in the same country as your DH?

Hes in the Army. DDs and I live in one place, the constantly moving lifestyle became untenable.
He comes "home" at least two weekends a month.

OtherCoraline · 09/02/2025 08:48

I'm English, live in Scotland, have a Scottish DH and Scottish DC. DH is as patriotic to his country as they come but he's certainly not anti-English. He does support independence (as do I) and is in the ' I support Scotland and anyone else playing England camp', but to be honest, so am I. It is purely about the sport though, it's not how he feels about England or English people. However, he does acknowledge that there are a small part of the population that don't like English people and thinks it's so stupid and xenophobic. However, it's a tiny percentage, not anywhere near half of the population.

Sounds tough x

@owlexpress I have (English, live in Glasgow) and it's really not funny at that point, it's pretty scary, although I don't feel personally attacked as I'm a Celtic fan who's always been welcomed and Ranger supporters are pro UK/anti-independence (generally speaking!).

It's like

Totally candidly the accent can be annoying (not regional ones, the middle class south east one)

Gutted my accent annoys you.

What do you recommend I do about it?

CMZ2018 · 09/02/2025 08:58

It’s like small man syndrome, don’t worry about it, pat them on the head and smile.

People like you are why everyone else hates the English.
Smug, think too highly of themselves and clearly based on this thread also have a sense of humour failure.

The post you quote there was obviously "humourous banter" which apparently the English are supposed to suck up gratefully according to this thread, but you don't seem to like the other way.

I find it all frankly tedious and nationalistic.

Yes, I can see it goes both ways. I have just referred to it going both ways. And it's tedious and depressing going both ways.

Pure sports rivalry is one thing. I don't mind if Aston Villa hate Birmingham City and Birmingham hate Villa. Villa and City have no meaning outside their sporting context. It's just pantomime villainy.

It becomes problematic when a sports team represent more than just a team. The sectarian chanting between the Old Firm is problematic. Anti-English or anti-Scottish sentiment at a football or rugby match is problematic.

You can support your own team without insulting someone else's identity.

Rhodesiawassuper1972 · 09/02/2025 12:09

But why? Just roll eyes and move on? If the English were to make these comments, there'd be screaming and shouting about the racist English... It should be called it out... Not put up with. (Itoo have seen violence and anti English abuse directed at me (because I have an English accent these days)...) And it's not acceptable in the 21st century

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 09/02/2025 13:06

I'm in a similar situation @AuntyMabelandPippin , I'm English but have lived in Wales for over 30 years, since I was 7 years old.

I can't see the issue to be honest. Yes there's a lot of "We'll support anyone who plays against England" , and cheering whenever England are scored against, but why does it matter really? It's just a sporting rivalry, it doesn't mean people don't see you as "local" or you haven't integrated or they don't like you. Its just because England are generally more dominant in most sports than Scotland or Wales, so they're the obvious rivals. It's no different than whenever Swansea and Cardiff play, or any other local derby, just on a larger scale.

I have another English friend here who always asks Welsh people "Why would you support France over England when we're part of the same country" and that doesn't help things I think. Why should the Welsh support the English, they're not English. The media doesn't help either, it treats England like the default country, and so the Welsh and Scottish teams don't get nearly as much coverage.

Personally, I really enjoy the rivalry, it's probably half the reason I'm still supporting England after living in Wales for nearly my entire life. Yes, everyone in the pub all supporting the same team is a great feeling, but so is getting to rib your friends because England have just smashed them after a few years of Welsh dominance. And after the game finishes, you get another round in and all agree that the ref was bloody useless.

Grannyinnwaiting · 09/02/2025 14:43

So many lovely English people whose niceness is drowned out by the annoying minority - there are two minority camps - the entitled toffs and the grim Oiks
There's a reason why the Scottish, Welsh and Irish are popular abroad and the English are not and it must be so frustrating for the nice as ninepence majority. In Ireland there is of course the Cromwellian and Black and Tans history which plays a part in the general view of the English

Livelovebehappy · 09/02/2025 15:12

I honestly think it's rooted in jealousy. England have always done so much better in sport than the Scottish, so they hate us with a passion as always feel they're the poor relationship sports wise in the UK. The exception being Andy Murray, though tbh Murray has mainly been resident in the UK and so many don't look on him as being a fully patriotic Scot. I think the English make fun of the Scottish in a jokey manner, whereby the Scottish are just a bit more aggressive and nasty about the difference. The green eyed monster....

Loveumagenta · 09/02/2025 15:16

Jealously??? Ahahahhahahahahajah
ahahahahahahahha
its not jealously.
England’s like that kid at school no-one likes, and their mum says’ oh they’re all just jealous of how amazing you are, darling! ‘

Americano75 · 09/02/2025 15:16

God, try being Scottish every two years when 'it's coming home' and every single part of the media thinks another glorious victory is imminent.

And on top of that, the only mention of Scottish football is derogatory ('pub teams'), conveniently ignoring the massive gulf in finances and resources. But it's funny how many England supporters lose their absolute shit at the very notion of ABE. Best just to face the front and keep chanting 'it's coming home'.

Also, OP lives in a country where the C word (won't spell it out in case it offends) is used as a term of endearment more than an insult, such is our weird sense of humour.

Whitesapphire · 09/02/2025 15:25

They are an embarrassment. England don’t consider these people our rivals as we are simply not in the same league when it comes to football. If Scotland put the same amount of effort in against other teams as they do against England they might do a bit better in tournaments. Six Nations is a bit different though and I’m thrilled England beat France yesterday! Brilliant win.

Americano75 · 09/02/2025 15:30

Jealousy. Oh my days. 😆

Cattenberg · 09/02/2025 15:34

Happyhippos123 · 08/02/2025 17:34

Because the English don't seem to mind at all that they were conquered by the Normans, they do seem to find it hard to understand that other nations haven't totally forgotten that they had their own national identity before the English took over.

Sport is the only place where it's made public, always in a jokey way.

If you're English and move to Scotland, Wales or Ireland, you might need to deploy the famed English stiff upper lip. The whinging Poms are only supposed to be found in Australia.

But all Brits are Poms! Not just the English.

Whammyyammy · 09/02/2025 15:55

It's just banter because the Scottish teams are awful at every sport, so they support thr team playing English teams.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 09/02/2025 15:58

AuntyMabelandPippin · 08/02/2025 17:15

Sorry, the joke didn't come through, I should have previewed. It was:

England Rugby Fans, are you feeling down, alone, unloved? We can help.Phone now on 0800 10 10 10. That’s 0800 won nothing won nothing won nothing

What's the problem with calling Scots Scots?

Well, that was a joke that fell flat!

Getuptherenow · 09/02/2025 16:17

😂I don't think Scotland are jealous of England...

OtherCoraline · 09/02/2025 16:19

It is worth pointing out the amount of money that English football has invested into it vs Scottish football. It's night and day.

user1471516498 · 09/02/2025 16:57

If you come from Carlisle you get even more stick whenever England loses! Along with the usual stick from coming from Carlisle.

Duckinahat · 09/02/2025 17:02

‘Banter’ is the excuse every time deaf offensive arsehole uses when they want to spout their bigoted nonsense. No different from the creepy shite Gregg Wallace came out with. These anti-English scum belong 300 years ago and should piss off back there.
