We're English, living in Scotland for a very long time. It's always been noticeable, but we're in a place where there's a lot of English people, so we don't see it as much. However, we were out with a Scottish friend a week or so ago , she had a few drinks and made a crack about English people, and I was really cross, as we try really hard to support Scots sports as much as we can. I've seen four posts today on Facebook all wishing France well in the Six Nations, and one particularly awful one which was sending this joke:

Well, if you refer to Scottish sports as “Scots sports” I guess the people you are discussing it with feel that you haven’t really integrated.

nonevernotever · 08/02/2025 17:14

I'm Scottish and I hate this too. I call it out though. (I hate the excuse that it's just banter too.)

AuntyMabelandPippin · 08/02/2025 17:15

Sorry, the joke didn't come through, I should have previewed. It was:

England Rugby Fans, are you feeling down, alone, unloved? We can help.Phone now on 0800 10 10 10. That’s 0800 won nothing won nothing won nothing

What's the problem with calling Scots Scots?

Everythingisnumbersnow · 08/02/2025 17:17

It annoys me too (I'm half English) but Scots are socially conditioned this way (my Scottish half recognises englishness as a bit annoying and up itself sometimes... Sorry, dad)

Everythingisnumbersnow · 08/02/2025 17:18

I don't understand the 0800 bit in that joke

I agree it's mega lame when Scots try to support whoever is playing England

The people in that country barely recognise Scotland as a place

snoopyfanaccountant · 08/02/2025 17:19

The commentators don't help here, particularly in regard to football. I don't watch a lot of sport but during last summer's Euros I did watch the Scotland games. Much of the halftime discussion for one of them didn't focus on the game being played but instead reflected on England and its matches both played and to come.

Boredlass · 08/02/2025 17:19

It’s a sporting rivalry. I will never support England and I live in England and my DH and son is English.

Doidontimmm · 08/02/2025 17:20

I’m Scottish married to am Englishman. I do it all the time. It’s Scottish humour, there’s no ill intent from me!

sanityisamyth · 08/02/2025 17:21

It's the same in Wales. These are quite popular ... it's pathetic.

MudpiesinEssex · 08/02/2025 17:22

Following a sports team is a metaphor for having a life.

snowflakelake · 08/02/2025 17:23

As dual heritage dc growing up in Scotland it put me off sports in general.
It certainly didn't feel like banter to me.
It is a sign of an insecurity.

Agreed, I’m Scottish and it’s just our humour. I was on the receiving end of it when I lived in England so it goes both ways. You need to learn to give it back to them!

The English are incredibly insufferable when it comes to football though. It’s not been coming home for what, almost 60 years now..!

ThatFishingTrip · 08/02/2025 17:25

It's not against the English, it's sporting rivalry. In the rugby world, you can ask pretty much any nationality who they want to beat, and they will say England. It's a very long standing rugby rivalry and will never change.

GutsyShark · 08/02/2025 17:26

Also Scottish and think this is juvenile, small minded nonsense. But it’s never going to go away.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/02/2025 17:26

Yeah the “humour” 🙄 does wear mighty thin doesn’t it?

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 08/02/2025 17:28

Must be something in the genes from many years ago.

I am born and bred in Scotland but consider myself British and voted no in the referendum. I don't like and don't watch sports.

Weirdly I would also support any sports team playing against England and my back was up when you indicated you lived in an area of mostly English people.

Thankfully I don't show these opinions, and would hate anyone to think they weren't welcome in Scotland! Please don't call us Scots though!

Cattenberg · 08/02/2025 17:28

I’ve seen this myself in Scotland. It’s funny because Scotland fans seem to think they have a big rivalry going on with England, whereas most England fans either haven’t noticed or don’t care. You don’t see the English flying flags in support of whichever country’s playing Scotland, do you?

Doloresparton · 08/02/2025 17:28

I have Scottish family and for all the 'hatred' of the English they are genuinely warm and lovely. Apparently it's not us, it's Westminster.

However a whole nation have a huge chip on their shoulder because their leaders voluntarily signed to join a union with England.
They had the opportunity to extricate themselves and didn't take it.

AgnesX · 08/02/2025 17:29

For the home nations of any of the tournaments it's par for the course..

It's when it gets nasty and "banter" it's unpleasant - and it works in all directions. It's not unique to the English in Scotland.

I am Scottish! Last time I went to Lisbon a guy asked me if Scotland was the one on the separate island. Nobody cares.

🤣 Anywhere i’ve gone on holiday where Brits have a bad reputation have loved us when they realise we are Scottish instead of English. I’m not just talking about Europe.

And the English aren’t exactly great at recognising our existence, just read mumsnet. English people are always posting on here saying, “In the UK, it’s this…” when they actually mean England, because Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland do things differently. But you always say UK, as if it’s only England that matters so they’re interchangeable to you.

Well, 45% of the whole nation........that's the minority!

Totally candidly the accent can be annoying (not regional ones, the middle class south east one)

No they're compensating for not knowing what you're talking about to avoid embarrassment

Oh yeahhhh some other place
