We're English, living in Scotland for a very long time. It's always been noticeable, but we're in a place where there's a lot of English people, so we don't see it as much. However, we were out with a Scottish friend a week or so ago , she had a few drinks and made a crack about English people, and I was really cross, as we try really hard to support Scots sports as much as we can. I've seen four posts today on Facebook all wishing France well in the Six Nations, and one particularly awful one which was sending this joke:

OP posts:

You bear in mind that Scotland’s biggest city has one of the most intense, serious rivalries in club football (between Celtic and Rangers, if you happen to live under a rock).

If you like football, it’s often not a casual “I check the scores” thing. It’s much more important, and it is very common for one set of the fans I mention above to chant about the queen being in a box, hating the Royal family etc. If you’re a Celtic fan, it would be against everything the club stands for to support anything that England does, ever.

This is also seen to a lesser degree at other clubs (the Dundee clubs, Hibernian, Aberdeen, St Mirren and so on), so very often the average football fan here will support anyone but England.

I’m assuming everyone knows that that has no origins in football itself and is deeply rooted in sectarianism. Football is merely a rallying point/proxy.

@BashfulClam chiming in to agree with OP, thought the point of AIBU was to have an opinion either way. I respect yours.

England weren’t better when Ireland kicked their arses last week… and I wouldn’t call 4 x6 nations wins in 20 years being better than anyone other than Italy… still chin up tits out
lads, maybe it’ll get better …

Sigh. No I said better than them. Meaning the Scottish - Scottish people who slag England off all the time. The subjects of the OP. I agree with her, it’s nasty and I got tired if it years ago. But bless you for trying.

Great game for England earlier. Looking forward to a win against Scotland next.

I'm thinking that you've only ever lived in England if you believe that only the Scots have an 'anyone but England' attitude to sports.

Think again- spent over a decade in Scotland.

Narwhalsh · 08/02/2025 20:51

I think you’ll find it’s the same in Wales and Ireland. National level sports are just like that aren’t they?

luckylavender · 08/02/2025 20:57

Boredlass · 08/02/2025 17:19

It’s a sporting rivalry. I will never support England and I live in England and my DH and son is English.

I'm Welsh, live in England have English husband and English son. Never support England.

BaronessSchrader · 08/02/2025 21:00

@ChocoChocoLatte
Here’s hoping for a good game tomorrow!

misssunshine4040 · 08/02/2025 21:07

I was born in England to Scottish parents and moved to Scotland as a teen.
It's mortifying how much anti English sentiment there still is.
It's so ignorant and I find it embarrassing

IVFmumoftwo · 08/02/2025 21:08

Happyhippos123 · 08/02/2025 17:34

Because the English don't seem to mind at all that they were conquered by the Normans, they do seem to find it hard to understand that other nations haven't totally forgotten that they had their own national identity before the English took over.

Sport is the only place where it's made public, always in a jokey way.

If you're English and move to Scotland, Wales or Ireland, you might need to deploy the famed English stiff upper lip. The whinging Poms are only supposed to be found in Australia.

Yes we do mind that the English experienced acts of genocide and had all their land taken off them. You seem to have conveniently forgotten the English king forces on them in 1603.

IVFmumoftwo · 08/02/2025 21:14

Mummer123 · 08/02/2025 18:30

If it makes you feel any better us Irish feel the same about the English

Why when the Scots also played their part in taking your land and giving it to the Protestants?

Bahhhhhumbug · 08/02/2025 21:17

My DH is English l am Irish. I do this yes k always support whoever England are playing as l hate all the 'its coming home' shite in the build up and dread to think how insufferable the fans would be if they did actuslly win.
My DH calls it 'Conquered Nation Syndrome' 🤣 It is all in good humour though we do have a laugh about it afterwards.

If you think that countries don't have historical rivalry and dislike of each other then you've missed a few world history lessons .
Generalising, but there would be quite a lot of anti English or British sentiment in many countries around the world with a long legacy of colonisation behind it.
I have encountered a lot of anti Scottish insults , none more so than in the Referendum campaigns and trust me it wasn't about a bloody game of rugby!
Vile stuff.

I don't get why it is always the English that get blamed for the British Empire/Colonisation? If I remember my history correctly the Scottish were enthusiastic slave traders (many in Jamaica are descended from them) and missionaries yet they seem to conveniently try to erase that history as if it is just them are victims of colonisation.

If people dispute the genocide claim look up the harrying of the North

IVFmumoftwo · 08/02/2025 21:21

I blame Nicola Sturgeon for really ramping up the anti English sentiment. Some might say it is a joke but I don't think so.

Mum2jenny · 08/02/2025 21:21

There’s never been much love between the English and Scottish sports teams supporters. It’s life.

The Scottish lineage in Jamaica is predominantly from the Scottish people that Cromwell enslaved and sent there. Look up the red-shanks/red-legs.

It's going a bit far to refer to all English people as the arseholes of the UK.

I took the original post by MarkingBadly to mean every nation has arseholes in it?

IVFmumoftwo · 08/02/2025 21:29

Seagullsandclouds · 08/02/2025 21:26

WTF?

Are you denying there were Scottish men who owned slaves and slept with them on their sugar plantations? Go and watch who do you think you are? Plenty of Scots profited.. They weren't all poor victims of the English. Many of the Highland clearances were done by Scottish landlords. FWIW Cromwell did the same to many of the Evangelical groups in England and Wales as well.

Yeah, its no coincidence that Celtic fans are more likely to be Catholic ( or at least have Catholic origins if not practicing). It’s less than 40 years since Glasgow Rangers had a no catholics rule!

But those who say it's a joke... It isn't funny. It's rude and unacceptable. Having lived in Scotland and put up with it... I now find it difficult to ever want to support a Scottish team of any sport. Because of the "joke"
