We're English, living in Scotland for a very long time. It's always been noticeable, but we're in a place where there's a lot of English people, so we don't see it as much. However, we were out with a Scottish friend a week or so ago , she had a few drinks and made a crack about English people, and I was really cross, as we try really hard to support Scots sports as much as we can. I've seen four posts today on Facebook all wishing France well in the Six Nations, and one particularly awful one which was sending this joke:

🤣 Anywhere i’ve gone on holiday where Brits have a bad reputation have loved us when they realise we are Scottish instead of English. I’m not just talking about Europe.

And the English aren’t exactly great at recognising our existence, just read mumsnet. English people are always posting on here saying, “In the UK, it’s this…” when they actually mean England, because Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland do things differently. But you always say UK, as if it’s only England that matters so they’re interchangeable to you.

Welsh football fans also have an amazing reputation wherever they go.

TikehauLilly · 08/02/2025 17:33

As a Scot living in England with an English DH and 3 50% English children, I support Scotland and take no notice of England. I don't actively support Argentina I just won't care about the game. I will support my celtic nations ahead of England.

The vitriol I get from English fans if I open my mouth when England are playing is enough to put me off considering it. I've live in England 20 years (2 years off equalling my Scotland life)

Happyhippos123 · 08/02/2025 17:34

Because the English don't seem to mind at all that they were conquered by the Normans, they do seem to find it hard to understand that other nations haven't totally forgotten that they had their own national identity before the English took over.

Sport is the only place where it's made public, always in a jokey way.

If you're English and move to Scotland, Wales or Ireland, you might need to deploy the famed English stiff upper lip. The whinging Poms are only supposed to be found in Australia.

owlexpress · 08/02/2025 17:35

So your friend had a few drinks, made a joke about a sporting rivalry, and you got 'cross'? (Incidentally a word rarely used by Scottish people!). It's a rivalry. Same as the Manchester derby or whatever. As long as it's in good humour (which I have to say, 99% of the time it is) I don't see an issue. Scottish people don't really care if England participate in the rivalry, but when your sporting teams are as unlikely to ever win anything as ours is, it's nice to have a vested interest I guess!

You sound overly sensitive. The 'particularly awful' joke isn't super funny but it's equally not offensive at all so why is it particularly awful? It's a daft joke, and England so far have won nothing in the six nations so..? The issue?

I have Scottish family and for all the 'hatred' of the English they are genuinely warm and lovely. Apparently it's not us, it's Westminster.

However a whole nation have a huge chip on their shoulder because their leaders voluntarily signed to join a union with England.
They had the opportunity to extricate themselves and didn't take it.

I highly doubt your average sports fan has any knowledge of the 1707 Act of Union. And the SNP are doing a shit job of running the show and it looks like people are finally coming to their senses about them so do t think it’s related to independence either.

Ib relation to sport it is just a cultural thing, but not one I’m a fan of.

owlexpress · 08/02/2025 17:36

God help OP if she ever stumbles upon a rough part of Glasgow during the Old Firm. Now that is a less good-natured rivalry.

This is it. There was a thread on here a few days ago with a poster worrying about going to court and was accused of lying by many posters because she used terms that are related to Scots law. Quick Google would have confirmed this and be quicker than writing out a post to someone in distress accusing them of lying

The sports thing is just banter. Same as the English saying Andy Murray is British when he was winning and Scottish when he was losing. No wonder he got his own back with the whole ABE thing

As someone who was born in England, grew up in Scotland to Scottish parents, now living in England married to an English man it’s known in our house that there will be a French supporter today as well as an English one. Nobody gets upset it’s just fun

MarkingBad · 08/02/2025 17:38

It's just people reminding you that there are fucking arseholes in every single nation.

Smallsalt · 08/02/2025 17:39

oh ffs. . Try being a Scot living in England t
with your accentimicked back at you every time you utter a fucking sentence, calling you mean, pretending they can't understand you..........

It's going a bit far to refer to all English people as the arseholes of the UK.

JudgeJ · 08/02/2025 17:40

sanityisamyth · 08/02/2025 17:21

It's the same in Wales. These are quite popular ... it's pathetic.

Or maybe Italy?

I thought the same.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/02/2025 17:40

Speaking as someone with Welsh, Irish and Scottish heritage, but born and raised in England, I’m curious what “my Celtic nations” means @TikehauLilly

It's the acceptable 'ism' om MN, like white people, men, Christians etc..

Happyhippos123 · 08/02/2025 17:42

It's nice that the OP is open minded enough to have a boozy Scottish friend, even though she's been lucky enough to live in an area of Scotland with lots of other English people.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 08/02/2025 17:43

@Whatevershallidowithmylife I didn't say it was mostly English people, but there's a fair few.

@owlexpress I'm certainly not over sensitive, but over the past 25 years here it's not got any better, in fact I would say it was worse. I just think it's a shame.

I remember when I had a new kitchen during theFootball World Cup in 2002? and the Electrician came in wearing his Brazil top just before England played them. I told him I wasn't impressed.

I'm not a lover of the English mentality either, to me, if we're playing any sport abroad, it would be lovely if we could just support any UK team, but that won't happen.

It’s a sporting rivalry. I will never support England and I live in England and my DH and son is English.

Is it a rivalry if only one side knows/cares?

Well, if you refer to Scottish sports as “Scots sports” I guess the people you are discussing it with feel that you haven’t really integrated.

At least it wasn’t Scotch sport. I’m half Scottish, English accent, although for some reason I’ve been talking to my dog today in a Scottish (Glaswegian) accent.

Mylovelygreendress · 08/02/2025 17:45

I think part of the problem is that so many English people don’t realise that GB isn’t just England .
How many times have we seen here and other places King of England ?
Also , EVERY World Cup there is a reference to 1966 !

HotCrossBunplease · 08/02/2025 17:45

What's the problem with calling Scots Scots?

The PP was pointing out that your use of “Scots” as an adjective to describe sport isn’t quite how a Scottish person would speak. You said “we try really hard to support Scots sports as much as we can.”

It's a subtle thing, but “Scots” comes across as a bit like exactly what a posh English person might say. It’s used to describe “the Scots language” and in a few other contexts but we’d generally use “Scottish” as our default adjective. So it’s “Scottish football” etc. Take a look at the Daily Record or the Glasgow Herald to get a better feel for when it is and isn’t used. Still, at least you didn't say “Scotch”!

PS I’m well aware of the TV show ScotSport but that is just an abbreviation of Scotland rather than Scottish in that context (to make a catchy title) I think!

Mylovelygreendress · 08/02/2025 17:48

Just remembered, DH and I were at Wimbledon a few years ago and there was a crowd of English guys sitting near us on Henman Hill . Andy Murray was playing and this crowd of goons were hysterically cheering his non British opponent. Also cheered if Andy lost the point .

@Happyhippos123 when you say “the English don’t seem to mind….” etc are you speaking for every English person in the country? Gosh I’m impressed that you know what every single one thinks. And they apparently all think the same. Wow. You must be a truly incredible mind-reader.
