We're English, living in Scotland for a very long time. It's always been noticeable, but we're in a place where there's a lot of English people, so we don't see it as much. However, we were out with a Scottish friend a week or so ago , she had a few drinks and made a crack about English people, and I was really cross, as we try really hard to support Scots sports as much as we can. I've seen four posts today on Facebook all wishing France well in the Six Nations, and one particularly awful one which was sending this joke:

OP posts:
Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 08/02/2025 21:41

I remember being at Wemyss Bay railway station waiting for a train. The pub there was showing a Rangers game in Europe and some men were screaming abuse at the TV aimed at Steven Gerrard, can't remember the exacts words by on the lines of you don't know what your doing you english followed by a derogatory term.

I certainly made sure to move away and not speak to anyone.

I've got some fab Scottish friends and love visiting Scotland but have been warned to be careful in certain areas. Having seen football violence in the flesh I take the warnings seriously.

Hedjwitch · 08/02/2025 21:42

I'm English and live in Scotland. The anti - English stuff is embarrassingly infantile and boring. Just give it an eye roll and carry on.

Blame Nicola Sturgeon.

Maybe you're being overly sensitive? I've been sent the 0800 won nothing text by friends who support rival club teams (we're all Scottish!). I've laughed when it's been sent - I've taken it for the daft piss take it is 🤷‍♀️

That joke is as old as me, it’s been around for donkeys years.*

I've never heard it before but wouldn't find it particularly funny as 'one' and 'won' do not rhyme in my accent. I would just ignore OP.

YetAnotherNewUserMoniker · 08/02/2025 21:59

I was born and brought up in the North East, I think it's a massive generalisation to speak of 'the English' when there are which vast differences in the country.

I do think anti-English sentiment is growing in Scotland. I used to go often when younger, as it was only an hour up the road. Took the DC over the border to Eyemouth a few years back and felt really uncomfortable, there was so much hostility.

Supporting whoever is playing England has always been the case in sport but feels like there's much more of an edge to it. Not sure I'd go back to Scotland now (particularly with my DC having cut glass Home Counties accents!). Which is a great shame, as
I used to love it.

Completelyjo · 08/02/2025 18:55

@BountifulPantry yet only the Scots do this!

Its not only the Scottish, the Irish hate England just as much.

They really don’t. Plus everyone was supporting England this evening, as a French defeat better for Ireland’s chances.

ThighsYouCantControl · 08/02/2025 22:03

Born in England, live in Wales and have Scottish ancestry. I have an unmistakable English accent so people know where I’m from. Never been offended by it, I really don’t think it’s that deep.

cherish123 · 08/02/2025 22:04

Agreed. It's quite annoying.

BrownieBlondie01 · 08/02/2025 22:19

I know what you mean OP, my BIL is Scottish and his hatred for England in sport has been quite shocking at times. He lives in England too!!

However I do also find it quite funny and a bit pathetic, as he talks about how pubs locally to his hometown all have signs up saying "Anyone but England" for things like the World Cup, Euros etc and they all support whatever rival team we're playing, when quite honestly the majority of English people don't even know when Scotland are playing and couldn't care less 🙈

I can't imagine wasting my time supporting a team I don't care about just out of spite 😕 What an utter waste of time.

How do you pronounce 'one' and 'won'? I can't think of an accent where they don't rhyme 🤔

A thread about anti English sentiment in Scotland that's actually full of anti Scottish sentiment 😂
I realise the sneering gammon visual is a stereotype not archetype, however this thread does give credence to the notion that most stereotypes are based on truth...😇😛

Wemyss Bay is a pensioner favourite. A zimmer trip hazard is the biggest threat you'd encounter.

Gerrard is revered by rangers supporters. They fucking loved him. Indeed a (very) large section of Scottish born rangers supporters are also England fans. They don't wave Scotland flags at their games, they wave union flags (among other things).

jacks11 · 08/02/2025 22:55

lm Scottish- in Scotland. I’m guessing this is to do with 6 nations? I don’t really get why it upsets you that some Scottish (and Welsh and Irish, presumably) people don’t support English teams. I could understand being upset if someone was throwing insults around/ being aggressive etc. but simply not supporting you? I think it’s daft to get upset over.

Why should a Scottish person support England? I think most people know some of it comes from the long-standing rivalry between the nations, both on and off the Sports field. I think it’s fairly common not to support your significant rivals.

I genuinely have no idea if the majority of English supporters would support Scotland when we play against anyone but themselves. I suspect not- but I genuinely couldn’t care less whether they do or not. It makes no odds to me if most English fans (or any other nation, for that matter) support Scotland or not- and I wouldn’t be in the least bit offended if they didn’t.

I also think the way the much of the “British” media behave doesn’t help your cause, tbh- the majority are actually quite biased towards the English teams of whichever sport. This can rub lots of people up the wrong way. It can appear to be incredibly arrogant and like all the other nations are an afterthought that they have kindly included as a token gesture. For instance, it’s quite irritating when the commentators spend quite a lot of time talking about England/English players/some aspect of the English team etc during a match in which England are not even playing. Not only that, but it can come sometimes come across as a lack of respect for others, or as though they think it is almost England’s right to win, they’ll do it easily and are doing everyone else a favour by even turning up to play. It’s annoying, and many quite like seeing them eat their words a bit. it’s perhaps not nice, but common across lots of aspects of life, including outside sport. People like supporting the underdog or whoever is playing their biggest rival.

tobee · 08/02/2025 20:20

Basically if you're born English who have to get used to every other country in the world hates you. Because, some time or other in history, we've pissed off most other countries.

Just have to have a water off a duck's back attitude, and when they "it's just banter, where's your sense of humour?" you just have to smile politely back.

If you come from the south east, it's even worse. And fgs don't come from London. And, Jesus Christ, don't be middle class.

There have been so many times in history when English people have shat all over other peoples of the world. As an English person you need to constantly remember this, and bow your head in shame. Because it's your fault.

It’s unusual to come across someone English with so much self awareness. Refreshing!

Alaimo · 08/02/2025 23:07

But these one-directional rivalries happen in so many places where there's a more populous/powerful neighbour. The Dutch and the Germans, most Scandinavian countries and the Swedes... It's not really some unique Scottish thing.

Quornflakegirl · 08/02/2025 23:13

I dislike it too. I am not English but my dh and children are and it’s unnecessary and rude.

DrFoxtrot · 08/02/2025 23:14

@BrownieBlondie01
One rhymes with on
Won rhymes with un

North West England. So anyone making that joke round here would be met with a Confused face. Maybe I've never heard it because I don't tend to mix in sporty crowds. Don't most people find this sort of banter boring? Grin

Lucyccfc68 · 08/02/2025 23:20

I’m English (with a Welsh Mum) and the anti English stuff has been going on for as long as I can remember, from the Welsh, Scottish and the Irish, especially where sport is concerned. I just laugh about it to be honest. I just love reminding my Welsh and Scottish family and friends that we generally beat them every time we play them at football. I just join in with their banter now and support anyone but Wales, Scotland etc.

We would never fall out over it, but I have been known to mute some of my Welsh friends on social media during tournaments. 😂

SleepToad · 08/02/2025 23:27

Jealousy that the Scottish have never one anything and never will. But in all seriousness the Scottish will also crucify their own...call to radio 5 following the Scotland football team drawing 2-2 with the Faroe islands
"I canna believe it. Drawing with one of the worst, if not the worst team in the world. After all when did they last win a game. I mean the Faroes should be beating Scotland"

OneLilacGuide · 08/02/2025 17:25

Agreed, I’m Scottish and it’s just our humour. I was on the receiving end of it when I lived in England so it goes both ways. You need to learn to give it back to them!

The English are incredibly insufferable when it comes to football though. It’s not been coming home for what, almost 60 years now..!

What’s wrong with fans having hope? It doesn’t harm you.

jacks11 · 08/02/2025 23:40

Loveumagenta · 08/02/2025 19:03

England - reputation = arrogant & smug. Sulk when they lose and gloat when they win.
Hence the Anyone-But-England attitude of, oh pretty much every other country!
Still, it’s just bants. Innit????

I also think this is a factor. It’s more than just celebrating a win- which is to be expected/ absolutely the same as everyone else would do- it’s the tendency towards excessive snugness (before and after the match/competition) and the gloating if they win that can be more than a little irksome.

And it’s not just Scotland, I’d it? Quite common in Wales and Ireland too- and a fair few other countries. To be fair, I think the most vocal/ noticeable source of this is large parts of the English media, though not exclusively.

I don’t condone aggression, deliberate intimidation/harassment or violence towards anyone as outlined, is really not on.

I think there is a fair amount of prejudice both ways, TBH.

What’s wrong with fans having hope? It doesn’t harm you.

It quite often isn’t expressed as “hope” but more a sense of… maybe entitlement is the right word? It sometimes comes across as arrogance, or as though there is a presumption that the English team somehow deserve to win the match (etc) by right, simply by turning up and before the team/individual has even earned it. I am not sure I’ve quite got the right words… it may not be the intent, but it often comes across as supremely arrogant, especially from the English media.

And we all know if England win, the gloating will be prominent and prolonged. The gloating and smugness from some quarter can be fairly insufferable. I mean, the way many still harp on about winning the World Cup in 1966, is a good example- it probably should be put to bed as a distant (though very proud) memory.

I think it would be fair to say that if England won more often, we’d never hear the end of it, which can be tedious,

🤣 Anywhere i’ve gone on holiday where Brits have a bad reputation have loved us when they realise we are Scottish instead of English. I’m not just talking about Europe.

And the English aren’t exactly great at recognising our existence, just read mumsnet. English people are always posting on here saying, “In the UK, it’s this…” when they actually mean England, because Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland do things differently. But you always say UK, as if it’s only England that matters so they’re interchangeable to you.

And they always say Northern or Southern as though everyone lives in England too!

Northern bloody where? Norway? France? It's so annoying.

There is huge sporting rivalry against England here in Wales. I don't follow sport because I think it's all inane, but the way things are going in West Wales, I can't say I blame Welsh people for how they're feeling about England.

And you wouldn't be celebrating if you won something? Might be best to realise that not all English act in the same way as not all Scots do the same thing either.

What is going on there? I kind of think people need to move on from Anti English sentiment but I doubt it.
