We're English, living in Scotland for a very long time. It's always been noticeable, but we're in a place where there's a lot of English people, so we don't see it as much. However, we were out with a Scottish friend a week or so ago , she had a few drinks and made a crack about English people, and I was really cross, as we try really hard to support Scots sports as much as we can. I've seen four posts today on Facebook all wishing France well in the Six Nations, and one particularly awful one which was sending this joke:

Generalising, but there would be quite a lot of anti English or British sentiment in many countries around the world with a long legacy of colonisation behind it.

And anti Dutch, Spanish, French and Portuguese as well?
Indonesia (the Netherlands)
Parts of Africa, Canada and the Caribbean (France)
Parts of India and South Amercia (Portugal)
Most of central and south America, the Philippines (Spain)

We weren't the only nation creating colonies or building Empires. Further back there were the Romans and the ancient Greeks, The Vikings and Anglo Saxons. The Normans.

Yeah it’s sad. They’re sad. But what can we do.. Oh I know, be better than them in almost everything! 🤷‍♀️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🏉

I’m Scottish but have lived all over the place and am now in England. For a long time I used to cheer everyone but England - it was engrained in me. Now I don’t. England has been really welcoming to me and I don’t feel comfortable doing it anymore.

Walkden · 08/02/2025 19:15

In the same way that England resented Brussels, Scotland have every right to resent Westminster. There is a lot of history of Scotland being treated badly by England most recently when the ind pendency referendum was won partly on the basis that leaving might mean leaving the EU , then strongly voting to remain in the Brexit vote and being forced to leave anyway mostly because that's what England voted for.

@Whatevershallidowithmylife I didn't say it was mostly English people, but there's a fair few.

@owlexpress I'm certainly not over sensitive, but over the past 25 years here it's not got any better, in fact I would say it was worse. I just think it's a shame.

I remember when I had a new kitchen during theFootball World Cup in 2002? and the Electrician came in wearing his Brazil top just before England played them. I told him I wasn't impressed.

I'm not a lover of the English mentality either, to me, if we're playing any sport abroad, it would be lovely if we could just support any UK team, but that won't happen.

But this whole "support any UK Team" is utter garbage! We are 4 separate sporting nations that happen to be stuck together. There is no appetite for supporting each other unless it's when one of the other 3 play England. It's not the other 3 nations that are the problem here! It's the English fans and the press. When England are in any competition they become so arrogant.

Mrsdyna · 08/02/2025 19:19

I honestly don't care what the Scottish think of England and I'm surprised that you do.

Loveumagenta · 08/02/2025 19:33

England weren’t better when Ireland kicked their arses last week… and I wouldn’t call 4 x6 nations wins in 20 years being better than anyone other than Italy… still chin up tits out
lads, maybe it’ll get better …

I highly doubt your average sports fan has any knowledge of the 1707 Act of Union. And the SNP are doing a shit job of running the show and it looks like people are finally coming to their senses about them so do t think it’s related to independence either.

Ib relation to sport it is just a cultural thing, but not one I’m a fan of.

I think you’re underestimating the Scots knowledge of their own national history.
My family are huge sports fans both in England and Scotland, it doesn’t mean we’re uneducated.

Didn’t say it did. But as someone who was born here and has lived nowhere else, I stand by my comment about your average “anyone but England” clown.

But to be honest I think this post is about rugby and I hate rugby so not sure why I got involved!

Out of interest when did England occupy half the world?

Really?

Did you not hear about the British Empire upon which the sun famously never set?

I live in England and will always cheer for England (unless they are playing Scotland). I don't see why not. Being positive is always better for you than being negative.

BigAnne · 08/02/2025 20:10

Do you not know that England and Britain are not the same thing?

Halycon · 08/02/2025 20:10

People getting very triggered by this whole topic. It’s a bit of banter, nothing more.

ABE (anyone but England) is a thing here and it always will be, but be assured, Irish and Welsh people feel exactly the same. So do many Europeans when it comes to football. Your fan behaviour at international tournaments caused that. 😏

Scottish people supporting England (in any context) are often known as ones for the watching.

RampantIvy · 08/02/2025 20:16

Your fan behaviour at international tournaments caused that.

And the racism displayed towards our black players from other European countries' fans never happened?

Halycon · 08/02/2025 20:17

Imagine…two things can actually exist at the same time.

Also, remember that plenty of England fans sent lots of racist abuse to the black penalty takers who missed at a recent shootout in a major final.

tobee · 08/02/2025 20:20

Basically if you're born English who have to get used to every other country in the world hates you. Because, some time or other in history, we've pissed off most other countries.

Just have to have a water off a duck's back attitude, and when they "it's just banter, where's your sense of humour?" you just have to smile politely back.

If you come from the south east, it's even worse. And fgs don't come from London. And, Jesus Christ, don't be middle class.

There have been so many times in history when English people have shat all over other peoples of the world. As an English person you need to constantly remember this, and bow your head in shame. Because it's your fault.

SassK · 08/02/2025 20:23

Sport, particularly football, is built on rivalry. Football derby days, for example, are huge. There are a bitter few for whom it goes beyond banter, but for the majority it IS banter, and it lasts no longer than the 90 minute duration of the game.

There's also an uninformed school of thought that a desire for Scottish independence is borne of anti English sentiment. Again, for a small minority, it's a valid claim however for the overwhelming majority it's entirely about home rule (it's terribly arrogant - and actually prejudiced! - to assume a nation could be that ignorant!).

I agree OP it’s so boring when Scottish people support whatever team is against England. Yawn.

Who actually goes out and spends their heard earned cash on, for example, a Brazil shirt?

It’s a historical resentment from the occupation. Jesus wept everyone is long dead. Their kids and grandkids and great grandkids are dead. Get over it! England occupied half the sodding world at one point- yet only the Scots do this!

Focus on your own team and ignore what England are doing!

Edited

I'm thinking that you've only ever lived in England if you believe that only the Scots have an 'anyone but England' attitude to sports.

Halycon · 08/02/2025 20:30

You bear in mind that Scotland’s biggest city has one of the most intense, serious rivalries in club football (between Celtic and Rangers, if you happen to live under a rock).

If you like football, it’s often not a casual “I check the scores” thing. It’s much more important, and it is very common for one set of the fans I mention above to chant about the queen being in a box, hating the Royal family etc. If you’re a Celtic fan, it would be against everything the club stands for to support anything that England does, ever.

This is also seen to a lesser degree at other clubs (the Dundee clubs, Hibernian, Aberdeen, St Mirren and so on), so very often the average football fan here will support anyone but England.

SassK · 08/02/2025 20:30

Maybe you're being overly sensitive? I've been sent the 0800 won nothing text by friends who support rival club teams (we're all Scottish!). I've laughed when it's been sent - I've taken it for the daft piss take it is 🤷‍♀️

AndThereSheGoes · 08/02/2025 20:31

No one really like the bigger nations in any sport. Everyone wants the underdogs to win.
Rugby has always had favourite teams and proper rugby fans seen the game as a whole....no one really wants South Africa to win anything, everyone is sad Wales aren't doing well.
No idea about other sports but why should the English care if no one else supports them? It's a game ...you need two sides, everyone gets that surely.

That joke is as old as me, it’s been around for donkeys years.

"I an Scottish! Last time I went to Lisbon a guy asked me if Scotland was the one on the separate island...."

By that I presume he meant Ireland @Everythingisnumbersnow 🙄☹️
