We're English, living in Scotland for a very long time. It's always been noticeable, but we're in a place where there's a lot of English people, so we don't see it as much. However, we were out with a Scottish friend a week or so ago , she had a few drinks and made a crack about English people, and I was really cross, as we try really hard to support Scots sports as much as we can. I've seen four posts today on Facebook all wishing France well in the Six Nations, and one particularly awful one which was sending this joke:

Anyway, I just wanted to answer OP’s linguistic question as she did ask.

I have zero time for the “anyone but England” brigade in sport and I get really pissed off when my English colleagues and family assume I will not be supporting England, due to the reputation that other Scottish people have created.

AlertCat · 08/02/2025 18:22

It’s historical resentment at the English occupation and cultural decimation of the Celtic nations. And a lot of English sports supporters are also insufferably smug when England are winning.

BountifulPantry · 08/02/2025 18:29

I agree OP it’s so boring when Scottish people support whatever team is against England. Yawn.

Who actually goes out and spends their heard earned cash on, for example, a Brazil shirt?

It’s a historical resentment from the occupation. Jesus wept everyone is long dead. Their kids and grandkids and great grandkids are dead. Get over it! England occupied half the sodding world at one point- yet only the Scots do this!

Focus on your own team and ignore what England are doing!

CommentHere · 08/02/2025 18:30

Try going to Ireland where the rugby team is all of Ireland but the football is 2 teams, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. So NI is part of the UK but not Great Britain, and the Republic is entirely separate. An English person anywhere in Ireland might be more confusing than in Scotland!

Mummer123 · 08/02/2025 18:30

If it makes you feel any better us Irish feel the same about the English

KimberleyClark · 08/02/2025 18:34

I’m Welsh, DH is English but has lived in Wales for 40 years. We have an arrangement. He supports the Welsh rugby team even when they are playing England. I support the England football team except when they are playing Wales.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 08/02/2025 18:34

Ah well, call me childish, but I've just put laughing emojis on the Facebook posts.

That was a very good game.

Sorry, the joke didn't come through, I should have previewed. It was:

England Rugby Fans, are you feeling down, alone, unloved? We can help.Phone now on 0800 10 10 10. That’s 0800 won nothing won nothing won nothing

What's the problem with calling Scots Scots?

Honestly, if you think that joke is ‘particularly awful’ you might be being bit of a sensitive flower.

Yeah, I was a little bit taken aback by the hatred of the English the first time I watched a footie international in a London pub full of Scottish lads down for the weekend about 40 years ago - but they expressed it by jeering at the telly and were otherwise brilliant fun.

It’s not just the Scots who hate us - everyone does! Best thing is to just take it on the chin, tbh. It’s hardly like we’ve done nothing to deserve it … 😂

Boredlass · 08/02/2025 17:19

It’s a sporting rivalry. I will never support England and I live in England and my DH and son is English.

It's not rivalry. Rivalry is two-sided. Most English people I know would support Scotland against teams not from the British Isles, and are resigned to, but not really that bothered by, Scotland's desire for England to lose against everybody.

BaronessSchrader · 08/02/2025 18:46

Well I thought it was a great match. Scottish supporting England. I’ll be at Murrayfield tomorrow cheering on Scotland. It’s a game. The fans sit together, no segregation. For 80 minutes there will be nothing more important. Then you go home.

RememberDecember · 08/02/2025 18:13

This, I don’t think many English sports fans give too much of a toss about this perceived rivalry.

Yet a thread has been created about the very subject and you have chimed in 🤔 if you didn’t care you would have just moved on.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 08/02/2025 18:48

@EnjoythemoneyJane Again, I'm no sensitive flower. I think that just was the icing on the cake today.

As an English person living in Scotland. I appreciate that when England play they are generally the Barsteward English. However news and even weather reporting are hugely skewed to the English. British national anthem used for English team etc. So I get the point, that the Scottish people do feel a little annoyed.

Tunnocks teacake straight from the freezer anyone? Free prescriptions?

StillTryingToKeepGoing · 08/02/2025 18:54

Scotland France is the auld alliance though … they’ve been mates for years 😁

RampantIvy · 08/02/2025 18:54

Ha ha we won!

Ghostofallnightmares · 08/02/2025 18:54

If you think that countries don't have historical rivalry and dislike of each other then you've missed a few world history lessons .
Generalising, but there would be quite a lot of anti English or British sentiment in many countries around the world with a long legacy of colonisation behind it.
I have encountered a lot of anti Scottish insults , none more so than in the Referendum campaigns and trust me it wasn't about a bloody game of rugby!
Vile stuff.

Completelyjo · 08/02/2025 18:55

@BountifulPantry yet only the Scots do this!

Its not only the Scottish, the Irish hate England just as much.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 08/02/2025 17:30

Well, 45% of the whole nation........that's the minority!

Not Brexit. The Treaty of Union. 🙄 Which was significantly the majority - to the extent that they had to sign it in a back alley secretly because of protests.

WellsAndThistles · 08/02/2025 18:56

There are 2 different things at play here. The first being lighthearted banter between Scottish and English friends, but there is also a darker side where there is unjustifiable hatred of anyone English which really should be treated as a hate crime. I've lived in Scotland for 40 years with English roots and I swear some folk would prefer the company of Hitler than me simply because my family tree doesn't go back to William Wallace.

The hatred can also be seen within Scotland over football teams divided by religion.

DaphneFlower · 08/02/2025 18:56

You get xenophobes in every country. They're not the brightest and don't usually have much going for them, so express their bitterness in their xenophobia. They're always intolerant of other groups too as they're small minded. Best just to pity them and ignore.

JSMill · 08/02/2025 19:00

I hate but it does work the other way too. Some English people can be very rude about Scottish sports. I live down south and was once sitting in my son's rugby club and overheard some of the dads saying they were going up to Edinburgh the following week and they were looking forward to 'smashing the jocks'. I have never cheered so hard for Scotland and I am happy to report we smashed them.

It annoys me too, but then I feel better when I remember everything the Scottish have won 😂

Loveumagenta · 08/02/2025 19:03

England - reputation = arrogant & smug. Sulk when they lose and gloat when they win.
Hence the Anyone-But-England attitude of, oh pretty much every other country!
Still, it’s just bants. Innit????

BigAnne · 08/02/2025 19:04

Out of interest when did England occupy half the world?
