To be absolutely fed up with the Scottish hatred in sport re England?

We're English, living in Scotland for a very long time. It's always been noticeable, but we're in a place where there's a lot of English people, so we don't see it as much. However, we were out with a Scottish friend a week or so ago , she had a few drinks and made a crack about English people, and I was really cross, as we try really hard to support Scots sports as much as we can. I've seen four posts today on Facebook all wishing France well in the Six Nations, and one particularly awful one which was sending this joke:

I'm mostly Scottish with a small amount of English. I support both Scotland and England in rugby, tennis, any other sport apart from football. Something about the English football fans that makes it better when they lose.

TikehauLilly · 08/02/2025 17:51

Scotch is very bad and insulting. My MIL refers to the Scotch and I am constantly perplexed as to why

According to my very posh mum (a Scot) the people of scotland are Scots

things are Scottish ... whiskey / shortbread / football etc etc

People are not Scottish.. but I often say I am (sorry mum)

@Whatevershallidowithmylife I didn't say it was mostly English people, but there's a fair few.

@owlexpress I'm certainly not over sensitive, but over the past 25 years here it's not got any better, in fact I would say it was worse. I just think it's a shame.

I remember when I had a new kitchen during theFootball World Cup in 2002? and the Electrician came in wearing his Brazil top just before England played them. I told him I wasn't impressed.

I'm not a lover of the English mentality either, to me, if we're playing any sport abroad, it would be lovely if we could just support any UK team, but that won't happen.

Well you sound oversensitive to me. You haven't explained why you found the joke 'particularly awful' and I'd really like to know.

I'm sure your electrician could not have cared less if you were impressed by his top, and I'd bet all the money I have that he's not sitting thinking about it 23 years later!

Interestingly DH (as Scottish as it gets) is a big England fan in cricket but not in other sports, so there is nuance.

Completelyjo · 08/02/2025 17:52

Well they aren’t English so why would they need to support them?
I’m from a part of the UK but I’m not English so I don’t support England.

DragonfliesAboveYourBed · 08/02/2025 17:54

I'm Scottish (although no longer live there) and always found it very tedious. As for "it's our humour", I'd like to think Scottish humour has far more to recommend it than "I'm supporting whoever England is playing" type jokes!

I will say though, that the "two world wars and one World Cup" Germany England rivalry stuff is also pretty boring.

@Completelyjo the point is not that Scottish people don’t support England. OP isn’t saying they should. This issue is that some Scottish people seem to hate England when it comes to sport, and will cheer on whoever their opponent is.

We also make whisky not whiskey.

MrsPeregrine · 08/02/2025 17:56

I think it’s runs deeper than sports banter unfortunately. There is a general hatred towards English people and it seems to be a thing now where young people are encouraged to feel ashamed of our country which makes me feel sad. Times are hard and the world is becoming a more hostile place. The future is looking uncertain. Now more than ever we need to stick together and unite.

TikehauLilly · 08/02/2025 17:57

@BitOutOfPractice Ireland Wales Scotland... as countires playing a sport but i belive the the celtic culture will be broader however this thread is about sport.

The my was a typo as I cut and pasted something and deleted and couldn't edit. I posted it later in in the chat.

Was there an issue with me supporting fellow celtic nations?

I’m sure you don’t mean that whiskey with a “e” is Scottish.

Actually I think that whisky, broth and mist are all Scotch!

I’m both a Scot and and Scottish person. I’d find it very affected to describe myself individually as “Scots” as in “I am a Scots person who lives in London” but I would say “we Scots have a long tradition of carving turnips at Halloween” and that I know and use many words from the “Scots language”.

It is a minefield, to be fair.

Well... I'm not.

The joke was just the icing on the cake this week. I've seen a lot of stuff on Facebook from Scottish (is that ok HotCrossBunplease ) friends, and it just reinforced the fact that, even though I've lived here for 25 years, I'm still not seen as 'local', although we've done our best to involve ourselves within the community. I just find it sad.

I wore a Brazil top to that game whilst living in England, my English pals thought it was funny 🤷

Sense of humour is definitely the biggest difference between the 2 nations, as I found out. Good friends in Scotland can be pretty insulting to each other and winding people up is a national past time. But as evidenced by this post it's not always appreciated by the more sensitive.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/02/2025 18:02

not at all @TikehauLilly. I found the “my” curious as, not being a mind reader, I didn’t know it was a typo. There are two other Celtic nations of course, as I’m sure you’ll know.

I find the whole thing, well s bit boring to be honest. I support wales at rugby, England at football, team gb at the olympics. I respect anyone supporting any team for any reason. It’s just the “anyone but…” attitude that I find a bit lame.

TikehauLilly · 08/02/2025 18:03

Sorry I am typing in the car. Don't mean to offend you or whisky. It seems to be the default on predictive text and I'm not paying much attention to typing spelling or grammar 🙃

You would say I am a scot living in London not a Scots person living in London. We are Scots living in london

Anyway i couldn't really care what people say or indeed what is correct. was just adding to a conversation.

TriathlonTriathlonTriathlon · 08/02/2025 18:05

I agree Op, I’m English but we’ve lived in Scotland and Wales. I ALWAYS support Scotland and Wales against other teams (not England obvs!). But I want them to do well otherwise.

Quacking4it · 08/02/2025 18:05

Im English in scotland. Years ago I was on the train and the whole carriage of drunk Scots fans started singing clap your hands if you hate the fucking English. They weren't even playing us. But then so far noone has commented about my ' Englishness ' to my face, but I do hear of a lot of genuine hate towards us 🙄

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 08/02/2025 18:06

AuntyMabelandPippin · 08/02/2025 17:15

Sorry, the joke didn't come through, I should have previewed. It was:

England Rugby Fans, are you feeling down, alone, unloved? We can help.Phone now on 0800 10 10 10. That’s 0800 won nothing won nothing won nothing

What's the problem with calling Scots Scots?

It's a bit of banter between rugby fans. You just have to see the respect that the likes of Doddie Weir got from all fans to see that it's not meant in a nasty way. There is a lot of respect and friendly rivalry in rugby. As an England Rugby fan I actually found that amusing, could be done for the Welsh as well mind you.

There's a meme going round with a group of men in jeans and brown boots, something about the stereotypical male rugby fan and the 6 nations. Why aren't people getting offended by that?

TikehauLilly · 08/02/2025 18:08

@BitOutOfPractice yes but I am not aware of them playing the six nations or international sport against England. I may henwring though... Cornwall Brittany and isle.of man (maybe they have their own team so I stand corrected)

CheezePleeze · 08/02/2025 18:09

I found the joke funny.

But only the terminally thick and xenophobic bring actual hatred to the sport, due to where the team/fans are from.

I have a good sense of humour, I told him to leave my house and not come back till he was wearing an England shirt! 😂

However, I was his customer, and he knew I was English. I don't think I would have done that to him.

Gorgeousfeet · 08/02/2025 18:13

It’s how it’s always been. Forever and ever.
Majority of us English just shrug our shoulders.

Any other country they play we favour other than Scotland. Who cares . Cos they don’t.

RememberDecember · 08/02/2025 18:13

Cattenberg · 08/02/2025 17:28

I’ve seen this myself in Scotland. It’s funny because Scotland fans seem to think they have a big rivalry going on with England, whereas most England fans either haven’t noticed or don’t care. You don’t see the English flying flags in support of whichever country’s playing Scotland, do you?

This, I don’t think many English sports fans give too much of a toss about this perceived rivalry.

And so was I. That’s why I said that you obviously didn’t mean to add the “e”?!

I think we are agreeing with each other, except that I do genuinely think that whisky is one of a very very few contexts in which Scotch is absolutely fine and used by the people who make it! (But obviously always followed by “whisky” and not just “Scotch” on its own like Arfur Daley would probably order 😂). It’s no surprise at all that Americans use Scotch as a general adjective when whisky is often the main thing from Scotland that they know about!

TikehauLilly · 08/02/2025 18:17

Not that I live in Scotland but I think nationalist snetiment with the drmaatic rise of the SNP and the negative connotations associated with it won't have helped with the Op's perception. (Not a thread about independence, more an observation about nationalism eg brexit, trump etc)

I do notice a change since I left from banter to more vitriol. Anecdotal but not sure I'd happily move my English sounding children back home.

Artyblartfast · 08/02/2025 18:17

It's not just a joke.

I lived in Scotland for several years after studying there for uni.

A group of us went to the pub. I can't remember whether we were wanting to watch the football..i think it just happened to be on. Another team v England. Pub crowd supporting the other team. Ours was a mixed group of English and Scottish friends. I remember the people there including staff being so difficult when I went to the bar and downright intimidating and nasty, we felt unsafe and had to leave. Not before one of us had a right go at this bloke for intimidating a bunch of young women though. They were vile. All jeered at us when we got up to go. We were 21 years old. They were much older.

Another time, an English friend happened to stop for a pint when some football was on. Another team was playing England and the people in the pub were all shouting and supporting the non English team. They tipped a pint of beer over my friend's head.
