Dryrobe W****r

Am I being unreasonable that I’ve discovered there is a Facebook page taking non consenting photos of lone women and children in dryrobes and mocking them. Or am I a snowflake? I wear one. Whilst I know they aren’t a stylish choice. It’s the most practical thing I’ve owned in years. I would be furious if someone took a photo of me and uploaded it

Interesting that the OP has mentioned she’s lost lots of weight because I think it’s a coat that someone wears when they’re not comfortable in their own body.

it looks like a giant novelty bin bag, but you know if you like it -wear it, just don’t try to persuade us it looks good. 😗

For ten years my daily work garb was a swim specific wetsuit.
As there was nowhere really to store lunch, I would dry the suit off a bit sling on a baggy fleece and a pair of boots and nip to the store.
I would have loved a DR back then.

You also have to be reasonably comfortable in your own body to sashay into the local corner shop in your Orca and uggs; or you know how long in takes to get back into a wetsuit if you take it off and it is still wet and you are towel dry.

I have a DR now. I don’t wear it to cover my body up because I am ashamed of it, I wear it for water sports and warmth. It gets worn every day.

I used to own a Canada Goose coat and the thing is much much warmer than that. It isn’t simply a cuddly snuggly big dressing gown.

I get the distinct feeling there are a lot of posters here who have never worn or had a use for a DR but simply have preconceived opinions about people who wear them and the robes themselves…along similar lines to the posters on the Facebook page, but in a far less cruel vein.

With regards to the Facebook posters, we have two sea pools up here. Lots of other places around our coast where there are sea swimming groups as well. This is DryRobe central, and if the cold doesn’t get you, standing straight in the wind will build up core strength.
Come here with your cameras boys! I give you 5 minutes before you are online ordering one for yourselves, express delivery!
You couldn’t claw mine off my back. It’s the most useful and practical coat I own. I didn’t get it to look fashionable or good. It does what it says on the tin and it does it well.

I used to think unkind but relatively harmless until I saw a pic of a little old lady inside the entrance of a large supermarket. She was also wearing traditional dress for her culture. She looked confused, maybe looking for a partner or a bit overwhelmed by the massive store.
I just felt really sorry for her that a stranger took a photo to put on social media for other strangers to laugh at her.
I’ve also seen pics of people sitting outside a pub prior to watching a rugby game. Yes it was sunny but not hot and after a couple of hours sat in a rugby ground it gets pretty cold.

Loveumagenta · 09/02/2025 09:35

Did you photograph her, put her on social media, accuse her of being a ‘tool’ or put a ‘cheer up, love’ in there? Or perhaps comment in her size and suggest that she doesn’t do any exercise so doesn’t need a DR???
I hope not…

i gave her a knowing look
strange question though @Loveumagenta - was it you? grumpy in tesco yesterday afternoon?

Edited

It was supposed to be jokey - because that is quite literally what mostly meant on FB are doing! And if she was looking grumpy I would imagine it would be accompanied with a ‘ give ‘s a smile love’ or perhaps a ‘cheer up love, it might never happen’

Loveumagenta · 09/02/2025 10:10

mostly men…

lucywrightbooth · 09/02/2025 10:36

I am a dryrobe wanker and I'm proud of it! I've even bought a matching one for the dog! We wear them when we walk at the beach, when I go paddleboarding, and I may have worn it to the supermarket once or twice!

CellophaneFlower · 09/02/2025 11:44

All this thread has done is make me want to be a dryrobe wanker 😳 Quite annoying as I don't actually need a new coat... but hate feeling restricted, so these sound perfect to me... therefore I'm going to have to get one 😫

Other brands are available! Even M&S does one… but DR really are the GOAT when it comes to actual functionality.

It is a bit mean but it’s also very disingenuous to say they “target” women and children. There’s loads of blokes on there too.

I think they are a bold style (!) statement and sre Bound to attract comment / raised eyebrows.

Ah, thanks for this. Sounded like they were only targeting women and children from OP's post.

Well if I'm going to be a wanker, no point doing it by halves 😂

MasterBeth · 09/02/2025 12:41

The mockery is because DryRobes are associated with open water swimming which is deemed to be a bit of a female middle-class cliche. As such, seeing someone wearing one on the school run or in the supermarket suggests a deliberate declaration of the kind of person they think they are. There's a lot of misogyny tied up in that view.

Having said that, there's also a much more established concept of the Full Kit Wanker who is a grown man wearing full football kit (shirt, shorts, socks) when they're not playing football.

Or look at the Mumsnet threads poking fun at MAMILs (middle aged man in lycra) going cycling. Same thing. A bit inappropriate, over-engineered and "look at me."

I do agree that you've got to be a dick to take a stranger's photo and post it online, though.

Yourinmyspot · 09/02/2025 13:05

I’ve just bought a much cheaper one for watching DD play football don’t give a monkeys what I look like as long as I’m warm!

RavenhairedRachel · 09/02/2025 13:52

Loveumagenta · 09/02/2025 09:32

Says who? Who died and made you the fucking fashion queen???? Why can’t someone wear a big coat to pick up the kids?
you have no idea what that couple
are doing before or after being in the shop - gardening? Walking the dog?
are we supposed to bring 2 coats out so sad little wankers don’t judge a DR being worn somewhere other than the edge of a lake???

Ooh Who rattled your cage ? It's my opinion if you don't like it just jog on. I knew them and they've never been hear any outdoor pursuits, they thought they looked good .They didn't they looked like idiots he's around 6 foot 6 and it nearly touched the bloody floor. Keep your fuckwit comments to yourself unless you know the facts

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/02/2025 14:03

VoodooRajin · 08/02/2025 11:15

I think its because of the middle class status thing, a bit like men on bikes wearing lycra

I live on a council estate. Everyone wearing them for school run here. So not a middle class thing (unless our council estate is particularly middle class?! Not sure where i fit into the class system 😅)

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/02/2025 14:06

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 08/02/2025 18:22

Unfortunately this happens a lot. Try finding out your normal office colleague takes photos of women's cleavage on the tube and other public places then posts them to a site where they're ranked.

The ones he was sharing in the office was of someone standing in the middle bit of the tube, really close and he must have been pretending to be on his phone.
Another of him standing in the isle bit and the lady sitting down.

Would have never guessed he'd be that sort. They hide in plain site!

That's fucking disgusting. I had a friend of one of my relatives on my social media and my opinion lowered of her greatly when she posted mocking pics of people on public transport.

Nope not round here. It's basically an open secret that everyone wears them to hide the fact they have their pajamas on for the school run.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/02/2025 14:10

@Fizbosshoes
I haven't dressed like that to go to the supermarket I'm simply going on the way back from somewhere else and don't want to go home and shower and change in to "supermarket-wear" (whatever that might be) first. Presumably the same is the case with DRW

Exactly!!! Like the threads whinging because people have gone shopping as a family and "why can't they leave their kids at home with dp and go alone". Because we literally pass the supermarket on way home from wherever and it makes sense to call in on way home😂

‘The mockery is because DryRobes are associated with open water swimming which is deemed to be a bit of a female middle-class cliche. ’

Who by? And also so the fuck what if it is!
I live in a beach town - sea swimming is FREE and everyone does it. It’s one of the few things you can do free with kids anywhere!
I also grew up on a coast, so again - people of all ££ backgrounds open swam or went to the beach as we called it!

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 09/02/2025 15:23

I thought the point of the page was to laugh at people who wear DR when they've clearly not been swimming/dog walking/standing on the touchline.

A bit like mocking people who live in the centre of a major city and have a Chelsea Tractor just to do the school run.

I guess because in the 'olden days' people just took towels, and they didn't call it cold water or wild swimming, just swimming

Quite, although Chelsea tractors are worse for the environment than dry robes

They can all go fuck themselves as far as I’m concern! Sad little men. I have somewhere to change on the beach without being gawped at. Let’s see them get into a choppy sea and swim all year round.
Some of them can’t bear the thought of women getting together, and doing something fun, challenging and up lifting together!

I overhead two blokes on the beach in November - all wrapped up- saying ‘loot at the state on that ‘ in the direction of a group of women. They were older, in swimsuits and wearing gloves and booties and and bobble hats and jumping into 6 degree water laughing their heads offs

yeah, I thought. Look at them, they’re amazing!

Love this post 🥰.
Could have looking at me and my sea swim group?!!
I originally bought a DR for beach use then it slowly became my almost most favourite item of practical clothing I e ever owned. But I do recall about 3 years back feeling a bit self conscious if I wore it about town on a wet windy day.
Then I bought a beautiful Sky blue one and I just started to grab it more and more often if I was going out.
The huge pockets mean I don't need to take bag for phone etc, the big hood means no umbrella and I can wear a loose fit jumper underneath that doesn't bunch up under my armpits like it would if I wore my regular coat.

Yes, you will see me in Asda, walking down the shopping street as well as on the beach.

It's the warmest most versatile waterproof coat I've ever owned.

I still calling just swimming. As does everyone I know. And if I could have had a DR back in the day I would have!
The water was 6 degrees today, so I give zero fucks if someone thinks I should have just taken a towel with me instead of my toasty DR and fleece boots.

I thought they were a middle class status symbol because of the price tag
