Dryrobe W****r

Am I being unreasonable that I’ve discovered there is a Facebook page taking non consenting photos of lone women and children in dryrobes and mocking them. Or am I a snowflake? I wear one. Whilst I know they aren’t a stylish choice. It’s the most practical thing I’ve owned in years. I would be furious if someone took a photo of me and uploaded it

Just had a look- what a boring group. Out of focus shots of people in dry robes taken from the back. At least Lookatmyfuckingredtrousers had a bit of variety and some funny comments.

The Wolef fleece though is a thing of beauty- and fabled on mn, maybe they're just admiring the Wolefs?

@Benjibas

Is wolef an MN thing? I said it recently to my husband (whilst appreciating a wolef fleece) and he obviously asked why I said it like that, but I couldn't for the life of me remember where it came from!

Branleuse · 07/02/2025 16:19

Maybe theyre dryrobeaphobes?

Being a DryRobe Wanker ( and surfer/wild swimmer) myself I totally agree!
There’s various SM feeds like this - and as I live in a seaside town Inrecognise some of the ‘wankers’ and the locations.
One was posted of a DRW crossing a road - the road opposite our main beach as it happens but you couldn’t tell that from the photo. What a wanker! Walking back to their car after a swim!
Another one was a friend of mine in a CO-OP - DRW is shopping! Yeah, she was because that Co—Op is right around the corner from the beach and We often pop in post swim to pick up breakfast bits before heading home to shower/change for work.

You’ll find OP that it’s mainly angry men posting - because how dare a women wear something - practical, oversized, warm that allows her to keep dry watching her kids play sport, or after exercising. Or for camping or walking the dog in awful weather. Or heaven forbid - change clothes discreetly in. Public place.
wankers!!!!!

wankers!!!!!"

..................
It is EXACTLY this.

They are so enraged that when women aren't presenting themselves to be sexually appealing.

Or, when women are too sexually appealing (scrunch bum leggings).

Basically we have to walk the line perfectly between Madonna and Whore, and even one wrong move will tip us into slut or prude depending on their mood.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 07/02/2025 16:20

God, I remember the judgment of people wearing Uggs, bars with signs saying they wouldn't let anyone with Uggs in, etc. I've worn Uggs every year since they came out - I couldn't care less what people think of them, they are durable and comfortable and warm.

Pages like that are stupid and narrow-minded.

TacticalEvasion · 07/02/2025 16:20

NooNakedJacuzziness · 07/02/2025 16:02

You can only be a dry robe wanker if you're wearing one miles from the sea, I.e in Asda. Plus points for wearing with crocs. And it's definitely not just women they target!

Agree it's a bit mean but all faces have to be blanked out.

I was coming on to see what the wearing situation was, because I saw someone walking down the street in one on Monday, and we are 40 odd miles away from the sea and a dozen miles away from a lake.
Just why?

ItGhoul · 07/02/2025 16:21

There are loads of social media accounts that highlight different clothing related things that people sometimes find annoying.

For example, there's JeansAndSheux (devoted to men wearing bootcut jeans and pointy shoes) and FullKitWankers (people who wear full football kits instead of just the shirt) on Twitter and there used to be one called Wellends featuring men with shit mod haircuts. There's also one with people who wear football shirts but have stupid things written on the back of them, I think it's called RuinedFootballShirts or something. All those groups focus pretty much entirely on men, so it's not a women-hating thing.

And on Facebook there's the Wolf Fleece Appreciation group which a PP has already mentioned.

I'm surprised you've never seen this sort of thing on social media at any point in the last 15 years. Or - and I think this is more likely - you only really object to this one because it happens to be poking fun at something you personally wear.

Are these groups kind? Not really. Are they harmful or creepy? Also not really, in my opinion, unless they're being creepy about people's bodies or photographing them in private spaces rather than out in public. I think there are certainly circumstances where photographing people for social media CAN be creepy and harmful, but I wouldn't put this into that category myself.

@YouDeserveBetterSoAskForIt
’We’ don’t have to do anything of the sort. I certainly don’t feel that I have to walk the line.

Theunamedcat · 07/02/2025 16:22

I'm sorry but 40+ posts A DAY? does no-one have anything resembling a life anymore?

idril · 07/02/2025 16:24

That has really annoyed me. I am a competitive cross country runner. I live near London miles from the sea but I'd like to see them stand around waiting to race when it's cold without adequate protection. I don't take two coats with me so it's highly likely I will pop into the supermarket on the way back from the race. How dare they judge like that. There are a million reasons why people might wear one to the supermarket or other seemingly non-appropriate places.

Oodlesandoodlesofnoodles · 07/02/2025 16:24

They’ve gone from a status symbol to a cliche and moved from the trend setters down to the copy cats. But the photo taking and posting is just misogyny.

Loveumagenta · 07/02/2025 16:24

They can all go fuck themselves as far as I’m concern! Sad little men. I have somewhere to change on the beach without being gawped at. Let’s see them get into a choppy sea and swim all year round.
Some of them can’t bear the thought of women getting together, and doing something fun, challenging and up lifting together!

I overhead two blokes on the beach in November - all wrapped up- saying ‘loot at the state on that ‘ in the direction of a group of women. They were older, in swimsuits and wearing gloves and booties and and bobble hats and jumping into 6 degree water laughing their heads offs

yeah, I thought. Look at them, they’re amazing!

Sickoffamilydrama · 07/02/2025 16:27

I'm happy to be a dry robe wanker DH bought me one for my birthday recently that supposed to be a cross between a dry robe and coat.

www.d-robeoutdoors.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoq-sW_ERtGYpj40Kh66LXBfYRtBlxshAj9mst2pwhAhpazerEC9

It's really warm, actually waterproof, has a great hood and the number of pockets is actually exciting.

I agree with others it's a bit mean to mock people and a bit weird I've always found that behaviour stems from a insecurity it's not exactly a well rounded adult like emotional response.

I feel like fagan from Charles Dickens when I say this but look at those pockets!

I can get a bottle of wine in each of my Dry Robes pockets - just sayin!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 07/02/2025 16:28

@PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich - I think "it's a Wolef" came from a cartoon, a lamb being chased by said Wolef. Lamb was called something like Lambkins? Or am I having a fever dream..

’We’ don’t have to do anything of the sort. I certainly don’t feel that I have to walk the line.

I was speaking of their attitudes, not that we HAVE to play along.

In their minds, that is what we should be doing, or else they label us xyz. Doing things like shaming women for what they wear is a strategy to get us to conform to what they desire of us.

It is quite effective when you look at young women today, at men in full suits at the Grammys whilst a woman is completely naked.

I couldn't care less what men think about me, but I do know that the way I dress makes a lot of them pop me into one camp or the other.

There’s also a page for The Wolf Fleece Appreciation Society where they upload pictures of people wearing clothes with wolves on. It shouldn’t be allowed really. It’s mean.

Edited

This one popped up randomly in my feed. Took a few goes to block it.
I was shocked people would do this to other people who were just going about their business peacefully

Loveumagenta · 07/02/2025 16:30

Other brands are available but if you’re actually going to use the robe for sea based activities the Dry Robe is the GOAT.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/02/2025 16:30

PearlClutzsche · 07/02/2025 16:10

I'm shocked that 44% of those who've voted think it's OK to photograph people (including children) without their consent, and then plaster their pics online to be mocked.

Shocking how horrible this place has become.

It's perfectly legal in England and Wales.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 07/02/2025 16:31

I wasn't aware of the group but I absolutely despise people taking mocking photos of strangers in any capacity. Personally I hate the dry robes they look like you forgot to take the gown off from the hairdressers 😂 and paid 160 quid for the privilege! But what i think of what someone else wears is irrelevant.
Everyone round here wears them for the school run, with the big trainers & socks over leggings combo.
Are they really comfy and warm or are people only wearing them because everyone else is?

OMG have to test this later when we walk to friends, I mean you never know when you might need a bottle 🍾

I have loads of coats @Wavescrashingonthebeach and it's becoming my favourite especially if it's miserable weather it is so warm. Trying to find a decent waterproof coat that goes below your knees is actually really hard.

But I don't wear socks and leggings that's not my style.

Fizbosshoes · 07/02/2025 16:36

Considering how snobby lots of MN are about eg B and M, Dunelm, B and Q home furnishings, live live laugh etc, then I'm not that surprised 44% of people think it's OK.

I think dry robes were originally used for after open water swimming but then lots found they were practical as a coat. I live about an hour and a half from the coast, I see people put them on after XC running races and they look a practical cosy thing to wear over kit when it's freezing cold

Stepfordian · 07/02/2025 16:38

Well considering the cost of them I’m surprised people wear them when they’re not strictly necessary!
