Was I so rude???

I am a new mum so looking for your opinion on what happened to me the other day. I am a single mum of a 4 month old baby who doesn't sleep much. Don't get much help, which is fine and when my baby sleeps I can get some mental brake. Was waiting at the till in Home Bargins and there were 2 ladies extremely loud, laughing and jumping flirting with the cashier, who was giving them bags for free... My wee one just managed to fall asleep so I thought it will be ok to ask for them to keep it the noise down. What a backlash I have received... both ladies shouting at me that I am soooo rude, joined by the cashier. I explained that I only asked politely and there is no need to get upset but was told not to take my child onto the shop... I get that, I wouldn't if I had another option. I left and was crying all the way back home. I think due to being exhausted and also the fact that I asked 2 mature ladies hoping they would understand... Maybe I was in wrong? This really bugs me... What would u do?

You did nothing wrong. if you asked them to please keep their voices a bit lower, and they were being very noisy, you were just looking out for your sleeping baby.
Normally women are very cnsiderate of sleeping babies.
Obviously, you got the entitled ones, who thought their love life was more imortant than anything else

Oh my 😂😂😂😂 you actually think it’s okay to ask people at a checkout to quieten down as you have a sleeping baby?? 😂😂😂😂

Word salad

Meh
The crime of being polite.

Good job you didn’t know about these clips, you’d have been judged by some for avoiding the dummies getting lost or dirty.

I’ll try both those, both are on my like list!

I’m going to ask HB to stock adult sized dummies next time I visit. It’s not the little ones that need them!🤭

I think it’s a different type of shop you get those in 😉.

Very sorry to tell you that Using the sleeping baby as a reason for people not to be loud when you’re out in a shop really isn’t on. You shouldn’t be expecting quiet when you’re out in public with the baby. With that said, it is good for you to take the baby out to get used to the noise and it is really good that the baby can sleep through noise. It is not ok for you to tell people to be quiet because your baby is sleeping.

if people are being overly loud and annoying, that is rude. If you’re calling attention to yourself and opening yourself up for their rude behaviour. The better course of action would have been to leave the queue and go tell a manager. Let the manager deal with the cashier and the customers.

however, how long could this really have gone on for? Could you not have tolerated it for the maybe 3 minute interaction?

I feel for you OP. Sadly the demographic found in Home Bargains is possibly the issue here. I’m astonished daily at how unthinking, downright awful some folks can be around poor behaviour and a lack of understanding around others.

What demographic is that? People below you, you mean? Nothing wrong with a bargain shop in today’s climate. Get over yourself

Getitwright · 07/02/2025 14:22

I don’t consider people “below me” or “above me”. I just notice people who might behave inappropriately or in an attention seeking way in an environment that doesn’t warrant that kind of behaviour.

I haven’t actually said there’s anything wrong with a bargain shop either, or the staff that work there. That’s others jumping to a conclusion that I don’t shop in them. (I do, but I might select the time of day)

Yabu to tell people to be quiet in a public area.

Having said that, you are a new mum and it is exhausting and overwhelming so go easy on yourself. It can feel like the worst thing in the world to have your baby woken.

But on a positive note, the more noise your baby is exposed to, the better they will become at sleeping through anything!

She didn’t tell them to be quiet, she asked. Completely reasonable.

In her house, yes.

Oh come on! You’ve said it, so at least own it.

Give over, like you weren’t looking down on others!

Do pray tell when would you choose to shop in a “bargain” store? When would you avoid the demographic of people who act inappropriately in your opinion.

That’s what I was thinking! I love home bargains and we are probably what you would class ‘’middle class” but the cleaning products and confectionery is so much better and better value than anywhere else… oh and the toothpaste!

farmlife2 · 07/02/2025 20:36

As my mother said when I was complaining about how loud her neighbour was, meaning my baby couldn't sleep at all (though I didn't ask the neighbour to be quiet, was just venting a little): "The world doesn't stop because you have a baby."

Yeah, I own it. Farm Foods was pleasant this afternoon mind, just me, a man looking for a bag of chips and a young lad who was on an electric scooter. He wouldn’t have dared to leave it outside for the thieves, so best kept with him. Loo rolls very cheap, no one screaming at anyone else, no children racing around unsupervised, pleasant man on the checkout. Jackpot. No grief.

Yep, and you are gobbling it up nicely.🤣

I didn’t get a reciept, so I can’t do a photo shot for you, but I did send my OH two messages, one on arrival, one on departure, so sometime between 15.29 and 15.58. So make of that what you will. I bought 5 for £20 loo rolls, three £2 each kitchen rolls, a bag of Quorn Mince and two Chilli con Carne mixes. It’s the maid’s day off so I put them away myself🤭

Sorry.... Did you just put down anyone who goes to Home Bargains?

Wow lol fair play to you 👏🏼

Fwiw, I've been to the store once at Xmas and my 6yr old knocked over a 7/8 foot lamppost decoration 🫣 thankfully nothing was broken and the staff were lovely and the people I saw in there were respectful in behaviour so I don't know how you got to your judgement.

In future, I think you should keep your judgemental opinions to yourself.
It's not a good look.

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 12/02/2025 10:03

@Mulberrypie I don't think you were rude. You asked politely and they responded impolitely. No need for that.

If I may offer some advice, when your baby sleeps during the day, sleep. Keep the basket close to your bed so you'll hear when they wake up and/or need you but honestly, sleep when baby sleeps. Sleep deprivation and new baby hormones are a bitch to deal with; can make you tearful when you wouldn't usually be, can make you think/act/speak to people how maybe you wouldn't have done before.
There was no need for them to be so rude; at the same time I don't think I would have done that.
Sending lots of love
