Was I body shamed at Mcdonalds

L9ucy · 04/02/2025 21:12

Went to Mcdonalds drive through as a treat, my DD wanted to pay, so handed the 5 pound note from the back seat. The man working on the drive through thought it was funny and said ''it's a good job I'm slim'' I have no idea what being slim had to do with it, he could reach but not because he was slim.. feel it was a dig at me

Reading too much into it. He will be sqeezing out the little window. You wouldn't last long at Macdonalds if anti fat people. It is ground zero for the overweight.

Bubblegumtatoos · 05/02/2025 08:21

1 stone overweight is thin in the UK. I think it was a comment about him and nothing to do with you.

MoonWoman69 · 05/02/2025 09:02

I really do feel for workers in public facing roles these days. It's going to get to the point where they daren't speak to customers at all!
This is a bit of a pathetic post really.
You should have been more reasonable in positioning the car right, he should have been able to make a little joke about himself, without you getting all offended at something that wasn't even aimed at you!
I'm on the larger side, I had to squeeze between a bar and a row of chairs at Christmas to get to the loo. I joked and said, "It's a good job I'm thin". Would you have been offended by that if you were sat at the table?!
What is the world coming to?!

XWKD · 05/02/2025 09:05

If you have to ask, then you weren't.

Like moths to a flame

Maverickess · 05/02/2025 09:40

No, you weren't body or anything else shamed, you're being unreasonable and ridiculous and you know it, especially with this "I don't understand why weight was brought into it' - you know perfectly well that it was a comment he made as he attempted to squeeze through the window so your little girl could pay herself, and not a dig at you.
You've just identified someone who wouldn't be able to defend themselves in the face of a ridiculous accusation like this and are using the opportunity to offload your feelings about your own weight.

Loveumagenta · 05/02/2025 09:43

Doubt he could even see you! You’re being a bit sensitive I think… McDonald’s would be out of business if they started criticising their customers! As would any business.

Funkyslippers · 05/02/2025 09:46

Surely he can't see your body size while you're sat in the car?

If he'd yelled 'it's a good job I'm thin,' whilst staring aggressively at your face you might have a point. Since he didn't do anything of the sort and just made the standard 'small talk joke' (in the same way as the 'I suppose it must be free, then' when a barcode won't scan or the 'I printed them myself this morning' when handing you new banknotes) he wasn't fat shaming you or anyone else. He wasn't even making a personal remark about himself, he just had his mouth in gear and was saying the things he says to a million other customers. Who aren't, I notice, on here complaining of being body shamed.

SaltyPig · 05/02/2025 09:51

WTF! No, no, and no again. I think you may have an issue based on the fact you asked after such an innocuous comment.

BobbyBiscuits · 05/02/2025 09:54

He was making a joke about how he slightly had to awkwardly reach to the back window to collect the cash. If he was bigger it would've been harder to reach. That's why people don't pay from the back.
He was talking about himself. If anything wishing you'd driven the car closer to him to accommodate him reaching out to the back window?

IlooklikeNigella · 05/02/2025 09:55

Sorry but you are being ridiculous.

Are you overweight and sensitive about it?
I suspect it was just a throwaway comment.

Do you also get offended when they say 'sorry for your wait'

😂

No, it's those who don't have an 'everything in moderation' attitude towards food who are unhealthy.

I'm in my mid fifties and due to an underactive thyroid and menopause I'm the heaviest I've ever been in my life - yet I'm still only 9st.

I have 3 adult DC and 5 adult siblings who are all a very healthy weight, yet every single one of us eat and drink whatever we want in moderation.

Not a single one of us have ever had to diet and we all have healthy relationships with food, just as our parents did/do.

Okie dokie.
Fit and healthy here and eat whatever I want . Just wouldn't want to eat that stuff as it's barely even food let alone badging it as a' treat ' 🤔

LoyalMember · 05/02/2025 13:50

Struggling hard to fathom how his quip could be construed as a dig at you. Still, you've given Mumsnet a chuckle...

MyFlightWasAwfulThanksForAsking · 04/02/2025 21:20

If you are sensitive about not being slim, maybe stop going to McDonald's...

If you watch fitness and diet influences on TikTok they actually say that a treat is OK and most of the time you can still stick to your calories.

Rosalina2025 · 05/02/2025 13:54

I do think you are being very paranoid though OP.

CarpetKnees · 05/02/2025 14:02

If you watch fitness and diet influences on TikTok

Grin I don't think I'll be getting advice from 'influencers' nor TikTok thanks.

Influences was the wrong word. There is some really good fitness advice on there. So you aren't really that funny. I just used the wrong word.

I said body shamed, not fat shamed, I would like to lose a stone yep but I was confused why he was talking about weight

Because he needed to lean out through his little window?

You obviously don't know that much about TikTok and the variety of people that use it.

Joe Wicks is on it. Thanks.

Lyn348 · 05/02/2025 14:11

You're projecting your own insecurities onto what he said OP.
