Was I body shamed at Mcdonalds

L9ucy · 04/02/2025 21:12

Went to Mcdonalds drive through as a treat, my DD wanted to pay, so handed the 5 pound note from the back seat. The man working on the drive through thought it was funny and said ''it's a good job I'm slim'' I have no idea what being slim had to do with it, he could reach but not because he was slim.. feel it was a dig at me

OP posts:

This is correct - we have to address the normalisation of comfort/emotional eating which affects women far more than men and contributes to the rise in diabetes, obesity, heart disease, etc.

But this is borderline irrelevant for this thread, no?

Maybe, I was responding to someone (who was responding to someone else), I didn't start the tangent.

A few people have raised it though, I think they've picked up on the irony of the OP having these hangups about her own weight while putting her DD on the same path.

HiEarthlings · 04/02/2025 22:51

I'm overweight (due to illness), and very self-conscious about it but even I wouldn't have thought this was a fat shaming comment! No, you're being wildly over sensitive!

zeibesaffron · 04/02/2025 22:53

Its ridiculousness like this that stops people having conversations with customers! This really is not about you!!

Movinghouseatlast · 04/02/2025 22:53

Christ. Of course you weren't bloody 'body shamed'. If you are only a stone overweight you won't even look anything other than a normal weight.

Frostywinterwoods · 04/02/2025 22:53

Oh so do you mean he over exaggerated reaching over to get the money when he didn't have to?
I can see then why you thought this, especially as I feel from your comment that you aren't happy with way you are right now!

Maybe though, he was exaggerating as a joke to make your daughter lol? Entertaining?

Or because he felt put out for what ever reason.

Try not to think on it or worry x

Cakeandusername · 04/02/2025 22:54

Absolutely nothing to do with you. Man making a little quip - he had to lean outbof booth and reach for money. It’s a tight space. Please don’t tell me you complained - my dc used to come home from McDonalds with tales if customers..the one with the parrot was my favourite.

Kedece2410 · 04/02/2025 22:56

Jeez people really do seem to look for things to be offended about these days

It's really hard to not see everything through our eyes, Instead of seeing clean slate and or actual simple, scene .

Instead we are seeing it ,the way we feel, things we are not happy with , scared of, past experiences etc. It's like a projector of our deepest emotions.

And you know what if it's possible try to switch off from this. Throw it away, shrug even lol it off. It's your life and effects no one but you, and tbh no one cares(I don't mean this in horrid way, but fact strangers that meet you don't care, they take you for what you are now& accept that, they know no different)

You are all that matters(well apart from your loved ones). You know when and if you can, want you will try or will get yourself to look way you want.. We only have 1 life. Best we can do is love ourselves, care and be kindXx♥️

MyFlightWasAwfulThanksForAsking · 04/02/2025 21:20

If you are sensitive about not being slim, maybe stop going to McDonald's...

This is the kind of nasty comments that make people insecure, hate themselves, and become paranoid. Who the hell are you? What gives you the right to judge or make these comments.
The op may have other reasons for her not being happy with her weight. So bloody what if she wanted to eat McDonalds& she said it was her daughter.

MakeYourOwnMusicStartYourOwnDance · 04/02/2025 23:01

OpenFox · 04/02/2025 21:15

Huh?! If you think that was fat shaming then you're clearly a bit paranoid about your weight!

If someone is passing money from the back you'd have to reach forward more which I imagine would have been hard if they'd been fat. The comment was nothing to do with you whatsoever.

This!
I don't read that as referring to you at all, he was talking about himself and being able to reach forward through a hatch to the back seat.

Frostywinterwoods · 04/02/2025 23:02

RaininSummer · 04/02/2025 21:19

Don't be daft OP. As someone above said, a large amount of their customers will be fat. He made a joke which tapped into your own feelings.

Where is your proof to back this up? Nonsense, judgemental, joke of a comment.

Did you actually know that sugar free and fat reduced etc food actually makes people fatter

Paul2023 · 04/02/2025 23:07

Welcome to the work place of 2025. The man made a comment ( joking) and it’s been misconstrued.
He wasn’t even aiming it you!

Welcome to a world where everyone is offended! Bloody hell. I doubt the man even gave you a second glance.

FumingTRex · 04/02/2025 23:08

Dont be so silly, he made a cheerful remark to make clear he didn’t mind having to reach.

Serenandnova · 04/02/2025 23:09

WilmaTitsDrop · 04/02/2025 22:25

You're trying to project your unhealthy relationship with food onto the OP.

Not good.

😂😂it's the MacDonalds that's unhealthy 🫢

soupyspoon · 04/02/2025 21:16

Jesus christ, you cant move for tripping over people who are 'shamed' in some way.

Indeed.
It's completely and utterly out of hand and just sours day to day living.

BreezySqueazy · 04/02/2025 23:15

Bloody hell, someone making a joke about THEMSELVES isn’t allowed now either! 🤦‍♀️

StrikeAlways · 04/02/2025 23:16

L9ucy · 04/02/2025 21:28

I have already said that I did drive forward a bit. Her window was open. I asked DD to give me the fiver but she wanted to pay and he was ok with it and found it funny

You asked if YABU. Everyone is telling you that you are. It seems you are blanking that out and just arguing your point. Why bother asking?

Bellie710 · 04/02/2025 23:20

Quite clearly he just had to squeeze forward for payment more than normal and was not even looking at you, you are over sensitive!

Lozzq · 04/02/2025 23:30

you were not body shamed, the guy was being self deprecating. If this is your threshold how do you get through a day?

DBSFstupid · 04/02/2025 23:30

Msmoonpie · 04/02/2025 21:45

No wonder people don’t dare to speak to anyone anymore.

Literally anything as demonstrated here can be taken as offensive. Its ridiculous.

I don’t like using the snowflake to describe as people but if the shoe fits….

👏👏👏

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 04/02/2025 23:37

A bit off the point but I don't get the body shame/slut shame/fat shame thing.

Shame comes from within. It's a profound emotion, much stronger and rarer than guilt or regret.

if someone told me I was a slut or fat I wouldn't feel shame because I'd know they were wrong. I can't feel shame for something I'm not. I'd be a bit bewildered they thought that and I might be annoyed with their rudeness but their inaccurate statement wouldn't shame me. And even if they were true they are judgements, not facts. There is nothing morally wrong with being some other persons idea of a slut or fat.

OTOH If someone accused me of being lazy or grabby I probably would feel shame because deep down I know I have a tendency towards those traits and I don't like that about me. The shame about this is always present and their comment would bring it to the surface. I'd also be embarrassed that someone had noticed this in me - that emotion would be new and transitory so they could have been said to have caused that but the shame is 100% my own. Nothing anyone else says can cause it.

But as to the OPs point - I don't think someone making a comment that they are slim can reasonably be interpreted as saying someone else is fat. This is coming from your own self image OP.

Where is your proof to back this up?

Given that 63% of adults in the UK are overweight, are you saying the PP was wrong to assume that a large amount of his customers would be overweight? 😳

A large amount of any retail establishment's customers will be overweight.

EdnaTheWitch · 04/02/2025 23:45

No.

Serenandnova · 04/02/2025 23:09

No, it's those who don't have an 'everything in moderation' attitude towards food who are unhealthy.

I'm in my mid fifties and due to an underactive thyroid and menopause I'm the heaviest I've ever been in my life - yet I'm still only 9st.

I have 3 adult DC and 5 adult siblings who are all a very healthy weight, yet every single one of us eat and drink whatever we want in moderation.

Not a single one of us have ever had to diet and we all have healthy relationships with food, just as our parents did/do.

Fluffythescarydog · 04/02/2025 23:49

No, you weren’t body shamed OP. You misunderstood the point of his comment. It was a joke about how he had to lean out to get the money. Nothing at all to do with your size.
