How often do you have homemade soup?

Just curious. I am always thoroughly impressed with myself when I make soup instead of buying it. Feel like Martha Stewart especially if I have whacked the bread maker out.

Just curious how often people make soup? Growing up my parents literally never once made it.

I made one two days ago. It's so yummy I make it about three times a month and it lasts four days (butternut squash soup). I also make cabbage soup in the summer which I feel very virtuous about as it is packed with veg and very low calorie.

I have soup for lunch most days in autumn, winter and spring, so make it a couple of times a week
For those who have never made soup, what do you do with the carcass of a roast chicken or turkey, don't you ever make stock?

No. I am a vegan so no carcasses here and I do make vegetable stock sometimes but am not a huge fan of soup its not enough for a decent lunch for me; fine as a starter

RisingSunn · 02/02/2025 14:09

Once a week or so.

chattyness · 02/02/2025 14:09

Quite a lot as I tend to make big batches and freeze, my faves are red lentil & smoked bacon, Potato onion, & kale. Roast butternut squash with chilli & coconut. Yellow split pea, parsnip & smoked bacon. I only use recipes as loose guides and tweak to my own tastes plus what I've got on hand to chuck in the pot.

BeyondMyWits · 02/02/2025 14:11

Just had homemade chunky chicken and veg soup for lunch.

Was really healthy, nutritious and filling. (DD had hers with bread and tons of cheese on top melted under the grill... like French onion soup... not quite so healthy, but delicious also).

Aftergloww · 02/02/2025 14:12

Usually every Sunday I make some soup. Probably more often during winter.

I bought soup once and hated it. Never again. It’s so easy to make that there’s no reason to buy it, really.

Daisychainsforme · 02/02/2025 14:13

I make it several times a week in winter using a soup maker - easy peasy !

We make a family soup recipe every time we have had roast chicken. Once a month ish.

I always look forward to it. In winter especially.

Please could you share your family soup recipe? We have one too after roast chicken and I'd love to know how other people make it 😊

StrungWithSilverBellsAndFlowers · 02/02/2025 14:13

We always have homemade soup in the freezer and eat it 2 or 3 x week.

I'm trying to get into a routine so we have four different types in the freezer to choose from, it's a great way to hit 30 plants a week if that's your thing.

Could we have some favourite soup recipes please?😀

Here's my favourite. I was looking for a way to use up an enormous lettuce from the veg box and found this recipe for lettuce, pea and mint soup. Needs to be made with a classic round lettuce, iceberg is far too bitter, and lots of mint.

Lettuce, pea and mint soup recipe / Riverford

A good soup for a summer's day: bright, green and not too filling. Good for Saturday lunch, alongside wedges of cheddar, oatcakes etc. This is fine with frozen peas too.

Probably every week or fortnight in this season. Usually lentil of some sort, today carrot and lentil

Sgtmajormummy · 02/02/2025 14:15

Every week I make a kilo of frozen minestrone vegetable mix into soup using pulses, extra stock and/or meat leftovers. It does two lunches.

ShaunaSadeki · 02/02/2025 14:16

All the time in the winter, if I am at home on a Sunday I make a big vat of whatever veg is looking at but tired in the bottom of the fridge and lentils, with various flavourings then eat it over the the course of the week for lunch or freeze a load for the following week if I can’t face it too many days in a row. I’ve just made one and it isn't that inspiring this week tbh, could have done with some coconut milk in it. But it is very healthy and practically free to make

ItGhoul · 02/02/2025 14:17

Hardly ever, but that’s only because I’m not arsed about soup. If I was going to have soup, I’d be more likely to make it than buy it, but I probably want soup about once every two years.

notacooldad · 02/02/2025 14:17

About twice a year and then I remember I don't really like soup

Crazymadchickenlady · 02/02/2025 14:18

I make soup about once a week/fortnight and freeze portions. Just take the frozen portion to work to microwave for lunch. I do bottom of the fridge veg with stock and a tin of tomato’s, mushroom soup, carrot soup etc. if we have a roast I make stock from the carcass and make soup from it with bits of lamb, chicken or beef and lots of veg in.

arethereanyleftatall · 02/02/2025 14:18

Re stock cubes - I dont bother with those any more. I always thought you kinda 'had' to use them. But dd got in to whole foods and anything from a packet is no-go. As long as it's jammed with veg/whatever, it literally makes no difference.
If we've just had roast chicken, I make bone broth out of the carcass and use that.

Londontown12 · 02/02/2025 14:20

Whenever I fancy soup I make it ! Can’t stand tinned soup 🥣 it’s so easy x

EmilieDuChatelet · 02/02/2025 14:20

I eat homemade soup 3-4 days a week for my lunch. Easy, cheap and nutritious - what's not to like??! I use good quality stock cubes, and use up veg that's a little bit past it's best.

warmheartcoldfeet · 02/02/2025 14:21

Pumpkin soup every 2 weeks in the winter. Can't get enough of it.
I'd have it throughout the year if I could get hold of the pumpkins.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/02/2025 14:21

Never but I don't like soup. If DH wants soup he buys a tin.

Oldraver · 02/02/2025 14:22

I used to take homemade soup everyday in the winter for work

I've been seriously put off my Nadia's hideous salty soup so giving it a miss for a while

I actually found it quite convenient for work if frozen as the block transported well on the bus

EmmaMaria · 02/02/2025 14:23

Frequently - but I batch cook and then freeze.

babyproblems · 02/02/2025 14:23

About once a week. I love carrot & coriander soup!!
